Chapter 72: Demon
Veronica was still trembling from fear when the Demon charged. A gunshot resounded as Alex pulled his weapon's trigger, it hit the monstrous ascended in the left shoulder.
The demon stumbled, but in a second was already charging again. The target was Alex since he was the only one with a weapon.
It raised its left arm to deliver a blow, but suddenly vines grew out of the wound and restricted its movements. The monster screamed from pain, but it didn't do much damage.
Within a few seconds it was already free, but it saved Alex's life and gave him enough time to shoot a second bullet.
He was about to pull the trigger, when his eyes met with the demon's it glowed for a moment and suddenly Alex turned his revolver on Veronica.
Her eyes went wide. She had no idea what was happening to Alex, but her fear suddenly evaporated in the face of possible death. With a quick somersault to the right, she evaded getting shot.
The demon laugh manically, sending a shiver down Veronica's spine. With a few quick steps she went between the hanging corpses, hiding from both the creature and Alex.
Two more shots resounded, but they weren't even close to hitting her. Veronica scrambled for an idea of what to do, but before she could've come up with anything, suddenly the temperature increased in the room.
With a quick swipe a large fiery axe passed through a few corpses. The remnant blood sizzled inside the bodies, but they didn't catch on fire. The axe's blade was just long enough to give a clean cut on Veronica's right clavicle.
The damage was small, but the heat made her yelp out in pain.
Suddenly another shot resounded. It hit the floor behind her and turned a small area icy. It was surprising, but her legs quickly found their footing.
The demon swung again, but it went wide. The next one she dodged with a back handspring and at the same time grabbed a bit of ice, which she pushed straight into the festering wound on her shoulder.
She gasped from both the cold and the relief, it eased her pain quite a bit and elevated her mind as well.
There were a lot to take in and loads of questions she didn't know the answer to.
"Die you demonic scum!" Shouted Alex, while aiming his revolver at Veronica.
With a bit wide eyes she jumped to the left and hid behind a wooden box of sorts. A shot resounded and it went through the box hitting her in the same shoulder.
"FUCK!... Why did I think the bullet wouldn't puncture?!" The box slowed down the bullet enough to not go through Veronica's shoulder, which meant her right shoulder went fully out of commission.
The demon was moving towards her as well, but it was much clumsier than Veronica and it slipped on the icy floor. It screamed in rage and slowly tried to get to its feet.
Alex in the meantime was loading his revolver again, but Veronica didn't let him take aim.
She had no idea what the demon had done to him, but one thing she knew was that he was way too irrational to try and convince him not to shoot at her. Instead she decided to do something probably very stupid.
As he was about to raise the gun, Veronica stepped in front of him and with a clean left hook to the face, she knocked him out fairly easily.
The demon got to its feet and screamed in anger, before charging at Veronica again. The axe was gone, which confused her. It seemed the creature either didn't want to or couldn't summon it!
Veronica raised Alex's revolver and aimed for the demon's leg. She didn't trust her left hands aim enough to shoot at the head, and the chest wouldn't necessarily have the stopping power she currently required.
The shot resounded and the bullet travelled fast, faster than the previous ones. It went straight through the monster's thigh, but it only caused it to stumble a bit.
Its hand was moving fast. Her life flashed before her eyes as the claws began to descend towards her head. With one desperate move she pulled the trigger again aiming straight at the creature's chest.
The bullet fired and the shot resounded... well, it is a bit of an understatement to say it resounded. The shot caused an explosion of sound. It was so loud that every window in a fifty meter radius of the house exploded into shrapnel.
Luckily the fighting was loud enough for most of the residents of the nearby streets to escape the vicinity, before the Loud Bullet was shot.
Veronica screamed as a huge pain assaulted her ears and within the next moment her hearing was gone. While breathing heavily she looked up and saw the demon back away while holding onto its head, screaming.
For a moment Veronica felt a small wave of fear, but it didn't cause any issues.
She raised the weapon again and emptied the whole chamber into the creature's body.
Every bullet was different. One caused a the creature to stagger a bit, one seemingly made it woozy, another caused a large puff of smoke and the final one sent it flying into the wall.
Said wall collapsed under its weight, but he didn't fly down the roof. Instead it stayed there and got buried under a large amount of shingles.
Veronica pulled the trigger a few more times, but the revolver was already empty. Slowly her trembling hand lowered and the gun dropped to the floor.
Her vision was fuzzy and a bit red. As the adrenaline started to run out the pain returned and she noticed a few other wounds on her body. Most of them were just scratches, but there was a deep laceration right on her stomach.
'Seems like his hand managed to get me!' She said it aloud and was surprised when she didn't hear herself speak, only then did she remember her deafness.
The laceration wasn't too bad, her ascended healing was already working on stopping the bleeding, still the pain was really uncomfortable and it wasn't even the worst.
Her eyes went to her right shoulder where a bullet was poking out. While gritting her teeth she tried to pull it out, but the pain was just too much and she had to leave it in.
Next she turned around and checked on Alex. He was perfectly fine, just unconscious because of her fist. She really hoped that whatever spell the demon had cast would go away with its death.
Behind her the rubble moved and the not so dead creature began climbing out. The shingles fell and broke on the wooden floor loudly, but Veronica's hearing was gone.
She only noticed the looming figure, when it was too late. From the corner of her eyes she spotted a shadow moving towards her fast.
Without thought she rolled to the side, which saved her life. The demon's hand that was about to crush her skull, instead grabbed onto her right arm, instantly shattering the bone.
She screamed soundlessly and watched with desperation as the demon raised her whole body to eyelevel. The pain was excruciating, but she didn't let it overwhelm her mind, which was scrambling for a way to escape.
Her eyes moved frantically, she saw the demon slowly move its other hand, about to disembowel her stomach.
There was nothing, no idea, no chance... at least that's what she thought.
In her heart a new suggestion appeared and before she could even think about it, her left hand moved. It went straight into the bullet wound on her right shoulder and with a quick pull, plus a huge amount of pain, she pulled out the bullet.
It was really bloody, but in the fraction of the second that she spent examining it, she spotted something very interesting, which gave her some hope.
On the bullet a small white pentagram marked its purpose... Killing spirits and evil beings!
As its hand moved slowly, hers moved fast like a snake strike. She held the bullet between her index and middle finger. She pushed it straight into one of the demon's black eye, which seemed to widen with surprise.
She kept pushing until she felt the brain. The demon at that point stopped moving, but it didn't let go of her pained arm. Its hand stopped right at the deep laceration, it was just close enough to make contact and draw a bit of blood, but not do any serious damage.
Her feet weren't on the ground, which meant all the gravitational force was only stressing her broken arm.
On her face tears flowed, the pain was nearly unbearable, but she still decided to try and get out of this situation.
First she used her free hand to grab onto the one that was nearly inside her stomach. With all her leftover power she managed to move it out of the way.
With that done she tried to pry her broken arm free, but that wasn't as easy, and she nearly blacked out from pain.
The demon still haven't moved and at this point Veronica realized that it was already dead.
With nothing else to do, she grabbed onto the creatures arm, which held her firmly and she began moving back and forth, trying to make the creature fall. After a few seconds of swinging the demon finally went down.
She landed on its red body and instantly passed out from pain overload...
