Chapter 4: Battle based on time
In an instant, Bulkesso's figure appeared before Gu Yi, his two broken blades crossing and creating a gust of wind that swept fiercely toward her.
At that moment, he was using a combat technique known as Frenzy. Masterful with all sharp-blade techniques, Bulkesso didn't even require the preparatory charging phase of Frenzy. He launched straight into its swiftest, most relentless form.
The damage to his blades temporarily prevented him from executing the devastating whirlwind slash capable of annihilating anything in its path. However, Frenzy was different—it was pure anger unleashed. It was a force of unrelenting destruction and torment that would not cease until obliteration was achieved.
Just before Bulkesso's blades could strike Gu Yi, she raised her hands, summoning a bright yellow energy shield before her. The shield pulsed with energy, seemingly intent on halting Bulkesso's unyielding assault.
It must be said that these mages from Marvel's universe were surprisingly adept in melee combat. Their subtle techniques, such as disrupting an opponent's attack rhythm with counter-shocks of varying strength, often proved remarkably effective.
However, Gu Yi had no way of knowing that Bulkesso had used the same relentless swings to cleave through the shell of a hell-born siege beast, a creature whose hide was as durable as city walls. His twin blades had reduced every inch of its flesh to mincemeat. If Gu Yi had known this, she might have approached Bulkesso's blades differently—perhaps by retreating. That is, if she even knew what a siege beast was.
Sadly, the long lifespan granted by the Time Stone had dulled Gu Yi's sense of battlefield prudence. She knew nothing of Bulkesso's origins and fought him as she would any other foe, which quickly left her struggling to survive under his ferocious attack.
The fiery red energy radiating from Bulkesso's blades flared brighter as the energy shield cracked. In mere moments, the shield shattered with a sound like breaking glass, scattering into starlight. The next instant, the sound of tearing flesh echoed as one of Gu Yi's arms, clad in its yellow sleeve, was torn apart in a burst of blood under the storm created by the twin blades.
Human flesh could never rival the toughness of the siege beasts born in hell. Even those monstrous creatures fell to Bulkesso's twin blades, their flesh shredded into fragments. Human flesh stood no chance—it became a mist of crimson in an instant.
Having lost both her advantage and understanding of the situation, Gu Yi turned to the forbidden power of time. Before the twin blades could fully crush her, she rewound everything to the moment before she had opened the dimensional portal.
Bulkesso's booming voice still echoed through the mountains, but the memory of her near-death experience lingered.
Gu Yi had long accepted the inevitability of her own death, but clearly, that moment was not now.
As someone who had gazed into the rivers of time, she had already chosen the day of her departure. However, the barbarian's sudden appearance had nearly undone all her careful plans.
For the first time, Gu Yi carefully observed the barbarian before her, his aura still heavy with death. Now, understanding why she had drawn the attention of such a formidable warrior, she resolved to change her approach.
Her past experiences had taught her that this mountain, seemingly descended miraculously, disrupted all spatial manipulation. Any fallout from their battle could spiral out of control.
This time, Gu Yi chose to set aside her displays of power. When facing an unknown force of such strength, caution was a virtue—especially when this opponent's past and future remained hidden, even to the rivers of time.
"I am, indeed, just a mage with modest abilities. But this mage has safeguarded this world for centuries. So, I must know—why have you come here?" she asked.
Gu Yi was not simply a manipulator of time loops, as she had been against Dormammu during Doctor Strange's trial. She was powerful enough to know that the reckless use of temporal power could have unpredictable consequences.
In her view, Strange's method had been far from ideal. But Strange was not her, nor did he possess the strength to confront Dormammu directly. The rivers of time had assured her of the outcome's favorability, so she had let things be.
Now, however, she might need to rely on those same questionable methods to deal with this barbarian.
Still, until she could confirm his intentions, Gu Yi had no desire to provoke Bulkesso's fury again. Even her supposed invincibility could be tested by such unbridled rage.
Victory or defeat could only be decided when the battle concluded, but Gu Yi had the power to ensure the fight would never end.
Her words made Bulkesso pause. Without memories of the battle that had occurred "after," he began to sense the oddity of the situation.
If supernatural power had existed in this world for centuries, the world of his vague memories must be entirely different from the one he now stood in.
Gradually, Bulkesso realized that this was not the world of his origin. But he didn't much care. Knowing he wouldn't vanish in the face of death, he allowed himself to relax.
The barbarian talent known as Iron Nerves had enabled him to face death head-on, his whirlwind slashes defying even mortality. Now, with no reason to fight, he let go of his battle-hardened vigilance and sat on the ground.
"Well then, Mage, what do you wish to know?" Bulkesso asked, pulling a transparent bottle from his belt and taking a long, hearty swig.
This bottle, known as a potion bottle in the world of Diablo III, was legendary. Regardless of its contents, the enchantment on the bottle caused it to refill itself every thirty seconds.
On a whim, Bulkesso had replaced its usual healing potion with his favorite liquor. Through this experiment, he discovered that the bottle itself held the true magic, not its contents.
Although the liquid had changed from a sweet-tasting potion to strong spirits, it mattered little. The only limitation was that the bottle refused to pour even a drop unless he was injured—a minor inconvenience at worst.
"I want to know why you've come to this world and when you intend to leave," Gu Yi said, her hands clasped behind her back as she maintained her composure.
The rich aroma of alcohol and food wafting from Bulkesso's bottle caught her attention. For a moment, she felt a sudden urge to drink as well.
In the brutal world of Diablo, where survival was paramount, brewing alcohol from grain was considered an incredible luxury. Yet Bulkesso

Thus, the name Bulkesso ,once synonymous with the strongest barbarian and finest blacksmith, now carried new meaning -the greatest winemaker
