Chapter 41: The fight, Failure, Make Sure You kill Superman.
Ethan stood at the balcony of the grand event hall, surveying the glittering party below. The celebration was in full swing, filled with laughter and conversation as his employees, investors, and colleagues toasted the one-year anniversary of Aether Industries. But his peace was interrupted by the familiar chime of Helios's voice in his ear.
"Ethan, there's an emergency in Metropolis. A hostile figure with destructive capabilities has been reported near City Hall. Initial scans indicate the presence of a high concentration of Kryptonite energy."
Ethan's expression darkened. "Where's Superman?" he asked, already moving toward a private room in the back.
"Superman is occupied. He's in Japan, containing a meltdown at a nuclear power plant. You'll have to handle this."
Ethan sighed, slipping into his hidden workshop. He glanced at the sleek, experimental suit hanging on the wall—a silvery-white design that combined elements of Shazam's bold simplicity and Superman's iconic style. It wasn't entirely finished, but it would have to do. He suited up, and moments later, he shot into the night sky, streaking toward Metropolis at Mach 10.
Ethan landed with a thunderous impact on the rubble-strewn street outside City Hall. Smoke and flames engulfed the area as panicked civilians fled from the chaos. His eyes locked onto the source of the destruction: a towering figure of metal and menace, tearing through buildings with mechanical precision.
It was unmistakably Metallo. His body gleamed with metallic enhancements, and the sickly green glow of Kryptonite radiated from the core embedded in his chest. Ethan's gaze narrowed as he recognized the danger the villain posed, not just to Superman but to the people of Metropolis.
As Metallo charged a green energy blast aimed at a terrified woman clutching her child, Ethan acted without hesitation. He launched himself forward in a blur, slamming into Metallo with enough force to send both of them crashing through a nearby building.
"Who the hell are you supposed to be?" Metallo growled, picking himself up from the rubble.
Ethan dusted himself off, his silvery suit catching the glow of the burning city. "Someone who doesn't appreciate you wrecking my favorite city."
Metallo sneered and lunged, throwing a punch that could crush steel. Ethan caught it mid-air, their arms locking in a battle of raw strength.
The ground beneath them cracked and gave way under the force of their struggle. Ethan used his leverage to throw Metallo, sending the cybernetic menace crashing through a row of abandoned cars. Before Metallo could recover, Ethan was on him, delivering a flurry of punches that dented his metallic armor.
Metallo roared in frustration, his chest core glowing brighter. He unleashed a concentrated Kryptonite energy blast, but Ethan stood firm, unaffected by the green radiation.
"You're not Kryptonian," Metallo snarled, confused.
"Good guess," Ethan shot back, grabbing Metallo by the arm and swinging him into a nearby building. The structure collapsed under the impact, raining debris onto the street.
Their battle raged across the city, the sheer force of their clashes leaving a trail of destruction. Ethan was careful to avoid civilian casualties, intercepting Metallo's attacks whenever they threatened innocent lives.
Realizing the danger of continuing the fight on the ground, Ethan grabbed Metallo by the torso and launched them both into the sky. The city shrank below as they ascended, their battle now silhouetted against the moonlit clouds.
"You think you're better than me?" Metallo roared, swinging a punch that grazed Ethan's jaw.
"No," Ethan replied, driving his fist into Metallo's midsection, cracking his armor. "But I'm stronger."
Up in the skies, Ethan's punches came faster and harder. He dodged Metallo's wild swings and countered with precision, using his enhanced strength to overwhelm his opponent. A particularly devastating blow sent Metallo hurtling back toward the earth.
Metallo crashed into the pavement, creating a massive crater in the middle of the street. Ethan descended moments later, landing softly and advancing on the fallen villain.
"This is over," Ethan said, his voice calm but firm.
But Metallo wasn't finished. He unleashed a desperate Kryptonite beam from his chest core, aiming it directly at a bystander. Ethan acted instantly, throwing himself in front of the woman and absorbing the blast with his body.
"Run!" he shouted to her, and she obeyed, tears streaming down her face as she fled to safety.
The distraction was all Metallo needed. Using his last reserves of energy, he activated an escape mechanism, propelling himself away in a cloud of smoke and debris.
Ethan clenched his fists, watching as the villain disappeared into the distance. He could have chased him, but the safety of the city came first
Ethan surveyed the destruction around him, his heart heavy with the damage caused. Emergency vehicles arrived on the scene, and firefighters worked tirelessly to extinguish the flames.
As Helios chimed in his ear, informing him that the immediate threat had passed, Ethan took a deep breath and glanced at the city skyline.
"Not bad for the prototype," he muttered, the faintest hint of a smile on his lips.
He took off into the night sky.

Metallo staggered into the Cadmus lab, his metallic body sparking and groaning with every movement. The Kryptonite core embedded in his chest flickered dimly, its green glow muted and unstable. A group of technicians hurried forward, guiding him onto a reinforced operating table. They exchanged worried glances as they assessed the extent of the damage.
Moments later, Letitia Luthor stormed into the room, her sharp heels echoing against the polished floor. Her face was a mask of anger and disappointment as she took in Metallo's sorry state.
"This is what you call unstoppable?" she barked, slamming her hands onto a nearby console. "You were supposed to eliminate Superman or at least that silver-suited pretender! Instead, you come back looking like scrap metal!"
Metallo growled, his mechanical hand tightening around the edge of the table. His voice was distorted, tinged with static. "That 'pretender' wasn't what I expected," he retorted. "He's not Kryptonian, but he's just as strong. Maybe stronger. And that suit of his—it shrugged off my Kryptonite like it was nothing."
Letitia's eyes narrowed as she leaned closer to him. "Stronger than Superman? Is that your excuse for failing? You had the element of surprise, Metallo! You had everything you needed!"
"Excuse?" Metallo roared, slamming a fist onto the table, leaving a deep dent. "Do you have any idea what I was up against? That guy slammed into me like a missile and barely broke a sweat!"
"Enough!" Letitia snapped, her voice cutting through the tension. She took a deep breath and forced herself to calm down. "I don't care how strong he is. You were built to be better, stronger. And yet, here you are, broken and beaten."
A hesitant technician stepped forward, clipboard in hand. "Ma'am, if I may... The damage to Metallo's systems is extensive, but it's not irreparable. We could enhance his armor, reinforce his core, and add more advanced weaponry. It might give him the edge he needs."
"Do it," Letitia said coldly, her eyes not leaving Metallo's. "And while you're at it, find out everything about this 'hero in white.' I want to know his name, his weaknesses, where he came from—everything."
Metallo gritted his teeth, his metallic jaw creaking. "You think I'm done?" he said, his voice a low snarl. "I'm not. Fix me up, and I'll finish what I started. That silver-suited freak doesn't know what's coming."
Letitia folded her arms, her expression softening into a calculated smirk. "Good. Because I'm not interested in excuses, Metallo. I want results. Superman, the hero in white—they're both threats. And Cadmus doesn't tolerate threats."
Metallo chuckled darkly, his glowing eyes narrowing. "Don't worry. When I'm done, there won't be anything left of either of them."
"Let's hope so," Letitia said, turning to leave. "Failure isn't an option, Metallo. Remember that."
As the scientists worked tirelessly to repair and upgrade Metallo, Letitia paused at the doorway. Her voice was calm but carried a chilling undertone. "Keep me updated on his progress. And make sure you triple his combat capabilities. I want no room for error this time."
The lead technician nodded quickly. "Understood, ma'am. We'll make him unstoppable."
"See that you do," Letitia said before disappearing into the shadows.
Back on the operating table, Metallo smirked as the technicians resumed their work. His voice, though distorted, carried a venomous promise. "That hero in white will wish he'd stayed in the shadows where he belongs."
