Chapter 24
Not a lot of things were making sense.
Whatever the case, I just wanted to get back and continue tending to my beans. Although, I was in the guild hall so I might as well take a look at what the jobs were like. The boy from before was still standing behind me.
“Do you need something from me?” I asked.
“Nothing really, I’m just having a nice moment with my old friend.”
What old friend?
“Your imaginary friend?”
“Aha, not exactly.”
Eventually, he turned around and walked toward the restaurant section of this guild hall.
“Anyways, I’ll come see you again another time~” he said with his back to me. He even did the little hand wave thing that you’d see in a serious, heartbreaking moment.
How elusive do you want to be?
He just pulled up, told me he knew me and left.
…
I made my way toward the job board. There were stone plates with holes in them hung up, imprinted with information. I didn’t really understand this as opposed to having them just on pieces of paper, maybe they wanted to reuse them sometimes? Or maybe stone just feels better to the touch—but if that was the case, I didn’t realise that the city was so wealthy.
Sifting my hand through some of them, I looked for ones that were around level 3.
Most of the jobs were either level 1 or 2 or even ‘no level required’. They came with compensation that was expected from something from those levels—shit all. They ranged from a few measly bronze coins to one silver coin at best.
I continued looking.
–
Level 3 Task
Find and collect the ‘nad from a Lord-Camelyn Snake
Reward: 14 silver coins
–
Okay, that seemed like a pretty interesting task. I wasn’t sure what a ‘nad was but I really hoped that it wasn’t slang for gonad. Regardless, 14 silver coins was a lot, that’d be enough to feed me for maybe a few days.
I also should probably save up for a better house.
Well, I might pick it up later, for now, I might go back and sort out my beans.
*
“Rin, can you at least tell me when you decide to leave randomly in the morning?”
“You were asleep, you might’ve scratched my face off if I woke you up for something like that.”
“I guess that’s fair.”
“Hold on, that was a hyperbole.”
I was back in my humble estate with my goddess who was slightly more charismatic than people should give her credit for. She was slouching by the side of our home, bathing in the bright midday sun.
“Are you going to do something?” I asked.
“What do you mean?”
“You’ve been lying around a lot. Why don’t you get a job or something?”
“Don’t act like my mom.”
What? You have a mom? Also, that wasn’t the crux of the issue. Surely we can get you to do something useful.
Tsk. She clicked her tongue at me and went back to staring off into the distance.
Screw this.
Take me to the oasis.

What was this weird tip today?
Anyway, I was back in my special little place. Taking my time, I harvested all the beans that I had planted. The berry plant (unspecified type) also looked like it was nearly at its maximum size—well, I guessed at least, I don’t know how big this berry plant was actually supposed to be. My hands were stained a little from the soft dirt.
[+300 EXP]
This would probably be a good time for me to go on a long tangent about something, but I was more confused about my interaction with whoever Cal was.
I’d begun to get a bit weirded out by the sheer number of people who seemed to know my name without my saying it.
Patting the last few beans into the dirt, I stood back up. Ah.
Take me back.
[Leaving OASIS…]

I did the same for the beans that were planted around my house.
[EXP Until Next Level: 12,743]
Suddenly, I saw the figure of a person walking toward our estate. Before fight-or-flight kicked in, I could quite easily identify the dark-black locks.
“Is my home your personal study space?” I asked.
“Excuse me? You’re acting as if I haven’t told you almost everything you know about d-waves and EM-waves.”
“Actually, you’ve told me like literally nothing.”
She threw me quite a cold glare. I probably should just let it go, maybe if I maintain this relationship for long enough, her love bar will grow to a point high enough that she’ll let me have a peek at her books.
Ah, but this wasn’t a video game, it was perfectly possible for her to act like this toward me for the rest of my life. That wouldn’t be very nice.
“Well, if you think you’re so helpful, how about you actually help me out right now.”
“What do you want from me then, Rin?”
“Come on a quest with me.”
“What is a quest, idiot? I didn’t realise you were into spiritual enlightenment. I assume you’re talking about the jobs on the job board.”
“Yeah, whatever. Still, quest is a very reasonable term to define them as.”
“Whatever you say, Rin.”
Bro, why do you keep saying my name?
“Anyways, are you going to help me or not?”
“Sure.”
Really? Just like that? No quips? No insults? No tsun before the soft innards? This has to be a scam, when something’s too good to be true it usually is—
“I can already feel the stupid thoughts you’re having in your head. I’m coming because I want to see how you fight.”
“Don’t you already know that I can’t fight very well?”
“That’s not what I mean. I want to see you fight and die right in front of my eyes. It will provide me with immense catharsis.”
“Now that’s a bit gruesome.”
“The more gruesome the better.”
Okay, what the honk.
