Debuffed Farmer

Chapter 31

Once upon a time, there lived a young boy and a young girl. The two of them fell in love and lived happily ever after—or some shit.

Nothing’s ever that simple~

I looked up at Clara.

The two of us were silently biding our time in this empty classroom. There was something overtly comfortable about the silent room; it was quite pleasant.

“So, what are you going to do now?” I asked.

“There’s not much I can do, can I?”

“Are you going home?”

“No. I don’t like going home during the day. It’s unpleasant.”

“I don’t suppose you’re going to trespass on my property again.”

She looked away.

Sigh.

It had only been a few days and I was already interlinked in an incomprehensible mystery. We fought a level 5 monster only a little while ago and I still haven’t seemed to be able to conjure anything with my EM-waves. It was frustrating, like when you try to pee but then people walk next to you and suddenly you become a little shy.

I had a bit more money now, so I could go buy a house or some prostitutes.

There was a story, it was around XX years ago now.

Standing at the beach, with her feet firmly placed in the sand—she stood at the crossing where the land meets the sea. The rich, crimson-tinted water splashed against her legs. It was a starry night, one which would live long in the memory of many people.

I would know… because I was there too. Kay Takamiya, I’m sure you also know. It’s something that we would never forget—right?

You would never forget this. You promised.

Fuu~ I’m just joking after all. Even you’re not invincible to the supernatural powers of mine which live far outside your comprehension.

Anyway, let’s continue the story. There was a young girl, she smiled as she looked at you. She really loved you.

How do people learn how to love? That’s something I’ve always wondered.

She never saw love. She was never taught how to love. She lived in a world that was all but devoid of love.

Yet she could still love you, I wonder why?

That’s supernatural—even to my standards.

The cold winter breeze brushed against her skin. No one visits the ocean during the winter, that’s stupid. Yet she stood in the freezing waters and blistering cold just to be beside you. Her body was shivering, but she wasn’t cold. Her face wasn’t pale—it was a faint shade of red—like the colour of the ocean.

Now, Kay Takamiya, even I can’t understand why you did that.

I’m an all-seeing, all-knowing creature, yet I can’t comprehend what you did.

That’s why I’m so scared of you.

The red tint of the ocean—it’s not natural, of course.

No one knows what you did aside from me.

Even Akechi didn’t think you’d be capable of doing it.

The request from her was completely incomprehensible. She asked you with the assumption that you’d find it outrageous. Akechi was a terrible genius. She was the worst of the worst. You knew that. So why did you listen to her?

Was it jealousy? Tell me, Kay, were you jealous?

I know you weren’t jealous. That was a rhetorical question. Jealously is not one of the emotions you have encoded into your brain.

Her smile was bright. It could light up the night—its beauty flashed in spades as the moonlight shined down upon the two of you. I too was sitting on the sand, smiling as I watched something that was more beautiful than myself. It was something that lured in everyone, good and bad.

Is that why? Is that why, Kay Takamiya? Is that why you did it?

Even that explanation doesn’t make sense. You’re the greatest success of the Human Realiser Project; you could’ve easily protected her if you had wanted to. You could’ve easily defeated even Akechi had you wanted to.

But instead, you let her die.

If constantly sidestepping serious topics were a genuinely useful skill, then my value as a human being would probably be a lot higher than it actually is right now. There’s something about the frustration in people trying to create a solemn mood that is just a bit funny.

“Rin, you took a while,” sighed Seria.

“Yeah, the mission went a little longer than expected and then I had to do something on the way back.”

She breathed out heavily.

“Anyways, what did you get?”

“I got a decent amount of money.”

“How much?”

“Five gold coins.”

She seemed confused, but a moment later, her face lit up.

“Wait, that’s a lot right?!”

“Yeah, we could probably get a nice house with this, I’m guessing.”

She jumped up and pulled me by the arm.

“Let’s go right now! I’ve had enough of staying in this dump!”

The sun was starting to set and I wanted to get some of my other errands done. Seria was acting a bit like a gold digger so it didn’t exactly motivate me to get going to the city.

I decided to tend to some of my plants first.

Take me to the Oasis!

Oh well, I didn’t exactly want to continue living in this terrible arrangement either. I guess I’d get going and try to find somewhere else to live.

“Alright, let’s see what we can get, Seria.”

“Finally!”

We began making our way to the city.
