Chapter 68: Chapter 69: The First User of the Sun Breathing
Inside the Cabin
Feng Yu and Sakonji Urokodaki sat in silence, quietly eating their meals.
Beside them, Nanako was unusually quiet as well. The atmosphere was still, with only the occasional sound of Nezuko munching happily on food, resembling the crunch of candy.
Xiao Bai and Xiao Hei hadn't approached; instead, they went outside.
Xiao Bai listened attentively as Xiao Hei recounted the events of the past month or so that Feng Yu had gone through.
"Xiao Bai, you don't know how dangerous it was! It was Master who killed that snake at the last moment. Otherwise, I might never have seen you again," Xiao Hei said, tears streaming down his face.
After finishing his tale, Xiao Hei looked at Xiao Bai, who tilted his head and asked, "So, you've awakened too?"
"That's right! I'm stronger now! Not only can I use the blazing sun flames to kill demons, but I've also gotten faster, and my cry is louder!" Xiao Hei said, grinning.
"I see…" Xiao Bai gave him a meaningful look.
"Xiao Hei, it seems like we haven't practiced together in a while. Let's spar."
"Caw?"
Moments later, the only sound heard was Xiao Hei's desperate scream.
The cry was so loud that it echoed throughout the entire Sagiri Mountain. Birds and animals scattered in all directions, rushing into their nests to hide, trembling with fear.
At the rear of Sagiri Mountain, beneath a massive waterfall, a young boy in grey clothes opened his eyes in confusion and murmured, "That sound… it almost sounded like Feng Yu's crow…"
Back in the cabin,
Feng Yu and Sakonji Urokodaki remained unfazed, clearly accustomed to such occurrences. Only Nanako seemed restless, squirming in her seat. However, when she saw that both Feng Yu and Sakonji Urokodaki hadn't moved, she dared not make a sound, her inner turmoil making her feel like a little cat scratching at her heart.
Feng Yu, noticing Nanako's unease, said calmly, "If you want to go, just go."
Nanako nodded eagerly, put down her bowl, and ran outside.
With Nanako gone, the only ones left in the cabin were Feng Yu, Sakonji Urokodaki, and Nezuko.
"What do you plan to do next?" Sakonji Urokodaki asked.
"Next, I want to personally guide Nanako and Tanjiro for a while. After six months, I'll have Tanjiro take the final trial," Feng Yu replied calmly.
"Have you decided which Breathing Style Nanako should learn?" Sakonji asked.
"Not yet. I'll let her choose for herself. Ever since she witnessed her mother's death, her personality seems to have changed… I'm not sure if it's for the better or worse…" Feng Yu sighed, recalling Nanako's odd behavior toward him.
"I see…" Sakonji Urokodaki observed Feng Yu quietly.
"Why the sudden interest in taking on disciples?" Sakonji Urokodaki asked.
Feng Yu didn't plan to tell him it was part of the system's task. Instead, he fabricated an explanation, "I guess I see my past in her…"
Sakonji Urokodaki fell silent. He suddenly remembered that when Giyu Tomioka introduced Feng Yu, he had mentioned that Feng Yu's parents were also killed by demons.
"I understand now…" Sakonji Urokodaki murmured.
At that moment, Nezuko leaned over and pulled out a small wooden figurine from her clothes. The figurine was somewhat resembling Feng Yu, but not quite.
Feng Yu stared at it in confusion, not understanding why Nezuko had suddenly handed him such an item.
"Take it. This is a wooden figurine Nezuko carved for all of us during this time," Sakonji Urokodaki said. He too took out his own figurine, rough and unrefined, clearly carved by the same person.
Feng Yu gently patted Nezuko's head and accepted the figurine.
Nezuko seemed to enjoy the gesture, her face breaking into a satisfied smile.
"She's a good child… but also quite pitiful…" Sakonji Urokodaki sighed.
"I believe in Tanjiro and Nezuko. One day, they'll return to being human," Feng Yu said with a smile.
"By the way, did you battle with an Upper Moon demon this time?" Sakonji Urokodaki asked.
"Yes, the strength was incredible. There may be only a few in the Demon Slayer Corps who could match it…" Feng Yu said, his voice quiet.
"I see… For hundreds of years, our Demon Slayer Corps has never faced an Upper Moon demon. Those who did never returned. We have no idea just how strong they are," Sakonji Urokodaki said, his voice carrying a hint of regret.
"Seems like… the Demon Slayer Corps is still too weak," Sakonji Urokodaki sighed.
"We've been fighting demons for over a thousand years, always in a disadvantageous position. We've even come close to total annihilation…" Sakonji Urokodaki began recounting the history of the Demon Slayer Corps' battle with Muzan Kibutsuji.
"It was more than four hundred years ago. There was a natural-born swordsman who mastered the Sun Breathing. He relentlessly hunted Muzan, the demon king. But the human lifespan is limited, and after that swordsman died, Muzan led the Upper Moons in a savage retaliation against the Demon Slayer Corps, wiping them out, erasing all traces of Sun Breathing. That's why all modern Breathing Styles are derived from Sun Breathing, and the original Sun Breathing can no longer be found…"
"The only reason the Demon Slayer Corps survived that retaliation was because the Flame Hashira family, the Rengoku clan, went into hiding. It was thanks to their retreat that the family survived the demon attacks. Many years later, the Rengoku family returned and helped rebuild the Demon Slayer Corps…"
"Given all this… the possibility of us ever truly slaying Muzan Kibutsuji seems incredibly slim…" Sakonji Urokodaki's voice grew thick with emotion, as though touched by an unprecedented sense of despair.
"Humans are human because we experience life, aging, illness, and death. But demons are different. As long as Muzan Kibutsuji is alive, new demons will continue to be born. Their regenerative abilities are astounding, and they possess eternal life…" Sakonji Urokodaki's voice grew solemn.
"We can't compare to that. The swordsmen of our Demon Slayer Corps are all cultivated by our mentors over the course of several years. This battle has left us with losses akin to our past annihilation…"
"If we want to restore the Demon Slayer Corps to its peak, it will take at least five years… And in that time, Muzan Kibutsuji's forces will have already recovered, likely growing even stronger…" Sakonji Urokodaki sighed deeply.
"I don't think so. I believe humans have unlimited potential for growth. In just a few years of training, we can achieve the power to slay the Twelve Kizuki. But the birth of the Twelve Kizuki takes a long time to build strength…" Feng Yu said, his voice unwavering.
"Our Demon Slayer Corps still has a chance!" Feng Yu's eyes were determined.
Sakonji Urokodaki seemed taken aback, sensing a resolve in Feng Yu that reminded him of the fighting spirit of the Rengoku family.
Looking at Feng Yu, it almost felt as though he was seeing the image of the first user of the Sun Breathing from long ago.
"Perhaps… Muzan Kibutsuji can really be defeated in this era, by our Demon Slayer Corps…" Sakonji Urokodaki murmured, as though struck by a sudden realization.
