Chapter 11: Chapter 11
It has been nine days we've been moving. We were no longer in the desert, but where we are is a place full of trees. I couldn't tell if it was a forest or not because the ground was so dry. At least there was a little stream up ahead, and we could take our bath for the first time in days.
"I'm fucking tired," Camila cried out as she rested her head on her horse.
"You ain't using your legs to walk, remember?" Nixon sarcastically said.
"But what about the horses? They need to rest," June voiced her concern.
"Will you guys shut it? We have got no time for all this," Lex yelled, and Camila huffed.
"Hey, wait... I can see a building!" Kelvin said, and he was right. It was a tall mansion that seemed to be quite old and very big.
"Let's take a look," Gold suggested, and I agreed with her. In no time, we got to the building. I got down from my horse and tied it to a tree.
Lex stood in front of the old wooden door and tried opening it. I jogged over to him, and he turned his head to look at me.
"I can help," I said, moving close to him, and he left space for me to do my magic.
I removed my hairpin, and my long white hair fell down my shoulders. I gently placed it into the keyhole, and it opened. I turned around and looked at everyone with a badass smile.
"Wow, Destiny, nice one." Camila winked, and I chuckled with a shake of my head.
We walked inside the house, and a shiver went through my spine. It was kind of creepy but still looked cool.
"Where are the horses?" Lex suddenly asked.
"I put them in the barn. Camila is feeding them," Kelvin replied, and Lex nodded.
"Oh my God, there's a lot of food in the kitchen. It can last us for a month!" June said as she ran up to us with a smile on her face.
"It's like things in this house have been empty for a long time," Nixon replied, coming downstairs and twirling around, mesmerized by the structure of this place.
"It has up to ten rooms," he added.
"So, each of us can choose a room we want," June smiled, and I was quick to object.
"It would be safer if we all just stay in the same place. We don't know what's out there."
"Are you guys forgetting what we are here for?" Lex yelled, and I turned around to look at him. Okay, what the hell is his problem anyway?
"Come on, dude. Let's rest for some days before we continue," Nixon said, and Gold scoffed.
"Yes, we have been traveling for days. Come on, Lex, it won't hurt anyone," I pouted, and he huffed out a breath.
"Okay, fine. But just three days, and we are out of here," he mumbled with a frown.
"Okay, Destiny," Camila called out, smacking her hands together. "Let's cook something. It's been long since we had a proper meal," she added with a glint in her eyes.
"Sure," I mumbled with a sigh.
The kitchen was nice but a little dusty. I took some noodles that were placed nicely in the cabinet and dropped them on the counter.
"You want us to prepare this?" Camila frowned, pointing at the packs of noodles like there were little beasts about to pluck her eyes out.
"Yeah, this is the only thing I can cook," I said.
"Oh, I see..." She trailed off, unsure of what to say. "You know what? Let's prepare different dishes. I'll cook an omelet and chicken while you cook the noodles, yeah?" she asked, and I nodded.
"I'll go get the chicken from Kelvin," she added, and I gave her a thumbs up. She came back almost immediately.
"Got it!" she said, showing me the chicken.
We were both cooking in silence for about ten minutes until she broke it.
"Uh, Destiny, do you like Lex?" she asked me, and I shifted awkwardly on my foot.
"Huh... no... I don't," I said with a small voice.
"You're lying, Destiny," she chuckled. "You don't only like him, but you love him," she added.
"I don't think I love him," I defended with a huff. "I once loved him. But he ignored me for no goddamn reason, so I just have to let him be," I added.
She smiled. Then we continued cooking the food.
"Do you think it's right that we are here?" I said.
"Oh... I don't know, but it's cool here, and I guess we should rest here for the time," she replied and shrugged.
"I just have weird feelings. What if someone is living here?" I said. "Don't you think it's weird that this house has a lot of food stuff? Like someone is living here or something?" I added.
"It's fine, Destiny. There is no one here... It's just an old fucking house, probably enchanted with magic to keep the food from going bad," she replied and tapped my shoulder.
I turned to look at her and sighed. "You don't understand, Mila. Yes, the house is old, but how come the food here is so new, like it was bought just yesterday?" I asked, and she went silent, pondering my words.
"I guess you are right. The raw food looks fresh," she said. "Well, just forget about that. It will be fine," she added.
We served all the food on the dining table, and everyone gathered down to enjoy the meal.
"So, what's next?" Gold asked.
"We should enjoy ourselves for the time being," Nixon replied.
"Let our leader decide first," I told them all, and Lex rubbed his hands together. I could feel he didn't know what to say.
"There's nothing strange, so... let's stay here for the time being to rest for our next journey," he replied.
No one objected to his words. Besides, he is our leader.
It was quiet for a while, and I noticed June hadn't been saying anything since dinner was ready.
She was the first to finish, so she went running up to her room. I quietly followed her. She closed the door to a room, checking if someone was following her, and I frowned. Guess nobody wanted to sleep together.
"What's up with her?" I thought. Then I walked up to her door and knocked.
"Who's there?" she asked.
"Destiny," I mumbled. I could hear footsteps from inside the room walking towards the door. She opened the door and checked both sides, probably checking if I came alone.
"Only you, right?" she asked, and I nodded.
"Come in," she said.
"June, tell me what's really wrong with you," I told her and grabbed her hand, concerned about her.
"We need to leave here as soon as possible," she said in a hushed tone, like someone else was trying to listen.
"I feel this place isn't normal," she added.
"What did you see?" I asked her, and she gulped and looked behind my head.
"I feel like someone—or something—is watching us," she replied with a slight shiver.
"I don't know, June. Though it's a little weird, I think it's just stress, that's all. It's gonna be fine," I assured her.
I felt like June was right in some aspect about the fresh and untouched food. I better get to the bottom of this.
"Do you want me to sleep here with you?" I asked her, and her eyes lit up.
"Oh, tiny, I'd love that," she smiled, and I chuckled.
If she was scared, I wondered why she'd come to this room alone. I brushed off the thought, looked outside the window, and saw a shadow—a shadow with three heads—but it vanished as quickly as I saw it.
I wasn't sure if I saw right. I looked back at June and then back to the window, but it was gone.
