Chapter 212: Chapter 212: Journey to the Northern Snowfields
On the continent of Douluo, a ranking of the deadliest locations existed. First on the list was the Slaughter City, while second was the snowfields of the northern reaches.
The Northern Snowfields, blanketed by snow year-round, stretched endlessly in all directions. Initially, patches of coniferous forest dotted the landscape, but as the group ventured deeper into the polar expanse, even these hardy trees became scarce.
"Erlong, are you sure this is the place?" Xiao Wu asked, her voice breaking the eerie silence as she turned to Liu Erlong.
"If the information is accurate, then yes, it must be here." Liu Erlong scanned their surroundings. The snow-covered ground stretched endlessly beneath a gloomy sky. Dark clouds gathered above, warning of an impending blizzard.
"Are you cold?" Mu Chen's voice was soft but clear.
"I'm fine," Xiao Wu replied with a gentle smile, while Liu Erlong shook her head.
Though they denied the cold, both women instinctively pulled their cloaks tighter around themselves. The biting wind, laden with icy shards, cut into their skin like knives.
The extreme conditions of the far north made it nearly uninhabitable. This barren land, rich in dense water and ice elemental energy, was home to a variety of ice-type and wind-type spirit beasts.
The crunching of snow echoed softly beneath Xiao Wu's steps. Suddenly, she felt a warm hand grasp hers. Surprised, she looked up to see Mu Chen smiling at her.
"Brother!" Xiao Wu exclaimed, her eyes lighting up.
"Mu Chen," Liu Erlong said, her voice carrying a mix of gratitude and surprise.
With his free hand, Mu Chen reached for Liu Erlong's. Through their linked hands, he circulated his spirit power, warming both women against the bitter cold.
The warmth spreading from Mu Chen's hands not only eased the chill but also filled Xiao Wu and Liu Erlong's hearts with affection.
Hu Liena, who was trailing slightly behind, watched the scene with wide eyes. Though she often mocked Mu Chen's roguish tendencies, she couldn't deny his care and thoughtfulness toward his companions.
"Do you need my help?" Mu Chen asked Hu Liena, noticing her trembling as she struggled against the cold.
"No!" Hu Liena replied stubbornly, wrapping herself tighter in her cloak.
The group pressed onward, the wind growing stronger and the temperature plummeting with every step.
After hours of trudging through the unrelenting snow, Hu Liena collapsed, her body unable to endure any longer.
"Brother…" Xiao Wu called out in concern.
Mu Chen didn't hesitate. With a wave of his hand, he pulled Hu Liena toward him.
"Mu Chen, you should help her," Liu Erlong said as she released his hand.
Mu Chen nodded, grasping Hu Liena's icy hand in his own. The spirit power he infused into her flowed like a gentle stream, banishing the cold from her body.
"I don't need your help!" Hu Liena protested weakly, her voice tinged with frustration.
"Stop being stubborn," Mu Chen scolded, his tone stern. "Do you want to die out here?"
The rebuke silenced Hu Liena. Though she hated relying on him, the warmth spreading from his hand was undeniable. It seeped into her body and even seemed to thaw the hostility she felt toward him.
Another hour passed as they continued their journey. The temperature dropped to such an extreme that even Liu Erlong, a Spirit Sage, was forced to use her spirit power to resist the cold.
Hu Liena's body trembled uncontrollably, her teeth chattering audibly. Without a word, Mu Chen pulled her into his arms.
"What are you doing?" Hu Liena gasped, her face flushing deeply.
"Do you want to survive or not?" Mu Chen asked simply.
Faced with no other choice, Hu Liena reluctantly leaned into him. Though her pride screamed in protest, she had to admit his warmth was her lifeline in this frozen wasteland.
"You better not get any ideas," she muttered, her voice barely above a whisper.
Mu Chen smirked but said nothing.
Every so often, the physical contact generated faint emotional ripples within Hu Liena, earning Mu Chen a modest but steady gain in spirit power.
After another half hour of trekking, the relentless cold began to ease. The air grew warmer, and even the biting wind seemed to lessen.
"Mu Chen, we're on the right track!" Liu Erlong exclaimed, her voice filled with excitement.
Mu Chen nodded, his eyes scanning the surroundings. According to Liu Erlong, who had overheard her father's drunken ramblings, the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan had a hidden ancestral land located in the far north—a secluded oasis deep within the polar expanse.
As the terrain shifted and the air grew noticeably warmer, they began to see signs of life. First came sparse patches of coniferous trees, then thick forests of broadleaf trees typical of subtropical and tropical climates.
"You can let go of me now," Hu Liena said, her face still red from their close proximity.
Mu Chen released her without a word, turning his attention to Liu Erlong.
"Something's here," Liu Erlong said, her voice tinged with both excitement and unease.
"What do you sense?" Mu Chen asked.
"A deep resonance… It's calling to me from my bloodline," Liu Erlong replied, her eyes glinting with determination. She pointed toward a distant forested area where a faint black speck marred the horizon.
"Looks like we've found it," Mu Chen said. "Let's rest and recover our spirit power before we move forward. We'll need to be at full strength."
The group nodded in agreement. After restoring their energy, they advanced toward the black speck. As they drew closer, it became apparent that the "speck" was, in fact, a massive cloud formation swirling ominously around a towering mountain.
Thunder rumbled in the distance as they approached. High above the clouds, the faint outline of a colossal creature could be seen—its wings stretched wide, its silhouette unmistakably draconic.
Liu Erlong's breath hitched. "That's it. That's the source of the call."
Mu Chen's expression grew serious. "Prepare yourselves. This is it."
