Chapter 19: An Other Day
Ryuichi stretched, feeling the exhaustion from the previous day fading away as the promise of the weekend filled him with energy. No school today—just a day to level up, practice some rogue techniques, and enjoy himself. Sitting at his desk, he quickly scanned the updates in his mind, going over some moves to practice for his upcoming rogue test on Wednesday.
Then came a knock at the door.
It was MortYous, standing there with a casual grin. "Hey, how is it going, I was passing by, so what are you up to."
"I'm doing pretty good," Ryuichi replied, rubbing his neck. "If it weren't for Valentine's class… feels like I've been through a human meat tenderizer."
MortYous laughed. "Yeah, I've heard about him, Rogue class, pretty intense. Does he really shoot at you when you're walking the tightrope?"
Ryuichi blinked, his mind racing back to the training sessions. "You mean like, to scare you?"
MortYous shook his head, his face serious but with a hint of amusement. "No, I mean he actually shoots at your legs, lets you fall, break something, then makes you crawl to your healing potion."
Ryuichi's eyes widened. "What?"
"Ha! I like this guy, he is great, we got to do this!" the spirit chimed in, laughing wildly in Ryuichi's mind.
Shaking his head, Ryuichi stood up, brushing off his clothes. "Anyway, I was about to head down to grab an Arcane Puff Pastry. Want to come along?"
MortYous's eyes lit up. "Yeah, sure, I'm down for that!"
As they walked down to the store, Ryuichi's eyes caught sight of small, dark totems floating around MortYous, their shadowy energy flickering in the air.
"Are those... Black Shaman Totems?" Ryuichi asked, curiosity piqued. "Are you a Black Shaman?"
MortYous grinned, nodding. "Yeah, I am. I specialize in curses and using shadows. My parents actually used to raid with your parents—they're Black Shamans too. It's kind of like a warlock spec, but into elements not demons"
Ryuichi raised an eyebrow, impressed. "To have those totems at his level… that's no joke," he thought. "Most people can summon two only around level 50."

Black Totem of Elemental Convergence
"All elemental damage dealt within 20 yards of the Black Totem is infused with a chaotic force, causing each successful elemental attack to spread a minor elemental shock to nearby enemies, dealing 50% of the original damage over 5 seconds."
Effect: Whenever an enemy takes elemental damage within range of the totem, a shockwave of elemental energy spreads to enemies within 10 yards, dealing 50% of the original elemental attack as a DoT (Damage over Time). Bonus: If the enemy is struck by multiple elemental attacks within 3 seconds, the shockwaves combine, applying a stacking Elemental Burn debuff that increases DoT damage by 5% per stack (max 5 stacks).
Black Totem of Raging Tempests
"All elemental abilities within 20 yards of the Black Totem have their critical strike chance increased by 10%, and each critical strike creates a minor elemental surge that deals 20% of the ability's damage to all nearby enemies."
Effect: Increases critical strike chance for elemental abilities by 10% when within range of the totem. Each critical hit triggers a Raging Surge, dealing 20% of the ability's damage as AoE to all enemies within 8 yards. Bonus: For each consecutive critical strike, Raging Surge's AoE range increases by 2 yards (max 15 yards).

Suddenly a familiar sound echoed "Ding!"
Celestial Quest Update
Objective: Kill Nathan
Reward: To be granted upon success
Ryuichi stared at the notification again, his pulse quickening as he thought. "I knew this was coming, things are not given freely, maybe I was chosen to fight the cartel, are they really into this shit... the universe want me to kill Nathan... well time to use what I was given, better live a short life then a long boring one"
MorTyous noticed Ryuichi's change in expression and chuckled. "Did you just get a call? You look like you just accepted a quest to assassinate someone. Hahaha!"
Ryuichi quickly regained his composure, flashing a grin. "Haha, no I was just looking at the rogue forums"
"Cool, do you PVP?" MorTyous asked
"I never tried to rank, no, if that is what your asking, why?"
"There is the NRT (New Recruits Tournament) this week-end, new recruits from all the guilds around Noviak will fight, I was looking for a partner they are 2v2 this year"
Ryuichi paused for a moment, considering the opportunity. It would be a perfect chance to gather more info on Nathan if he participate, especially if he needed to take him down later.
"We could give it a try" he replied with a sly smile.
"I heard you were one of the most advanced rogue in the first years, that would be great"
"I don't know, I guess so." Replied Ryuichi with a smile
"Done. I'll register us now," MorTyous said enthusiastically.
Ding—a notification popped up in Ryuichi's mind.
MorTyous is inviting you to join his 2v2 team. Would you like to accept?
"Yes," Ryuichi thought, his grin widening as he accepted.
"The price is actually a place in the upcoming raid: The Forgotten Vaults. The portal is almost fully respawned, and we've already claimed the entry. One of our security battleground teams is guarding it from other guilds who might want to take control of the portal."
Ryuichi's eyes narrowed as he heard the words. The Forgotten Vaults—a raid with a reputation for both incredible rewards and unspeakable dangers. Every major guild would be eyeing that portal, and the battle for it could be more vicious than the raid itself. If they had already secured it, that meant only one thing—this would be a high-stakes affair.
It was a place of deep, forbidden warlock magic. Once part of an ancient kingdom allied with the demonic forces, the vault was said to hold treasures beyond imagination. Though the kingdom has crumbled into ruins, the vault remains, guarded by creatures of darkness: demonic sentinels, fallen angels, and hordes of imps, all loyal to an ancient level 35 elite demonic priest Azgorath.
The Forgotten Vaults only respawn every ten years due to the immense power required to restore the realm's ancient magic. Despite being a level 30 raid, the vault is highly sought after, not only for its gold, crafting materials but also for the rare Demonic Essences it holds, making the battle ground to secure the raid the raid its self.
"So, when does it start?" Ryuichi asked.
"Next week-end, Monday 9:30 AM," MortYous replied. "Let's go duel, I want to see what you got"
The two headed to the training grounds, a designated area where people could freely duel without fear of getting fined or warned, unlike most districts where dueling was illegal. The spot was near the dwarven blacksmiths, and unsurprisingly, the place was packed. Teams with logos and names were everywhere, and merchants were selling custom tabards with team names and logos emblazoned on them.
"Let's buy one!" MortYous suggested.
"Yeah, but what do you want to call us?"
"The Darks!" MortYous said.
Ryuichi shook his head. "The darks? No..."
"How about... The Dark Knights?" MortYous tried again.
"No, That's even worse," Ryuichi laughed.
"Alright, what do you suggest then?" MortYous asked.
"Shadow Requiem."
MortYous paused, thinking it over. "Wow, that is hot, yea! Let's go with it. Now, what about the logo?"
"A dagger on a tree?" Ryuichi proposed.
"Nah, not really my thing," MorTyous replied.
"Okay, how about a totem with a dagger?"
MorTyous grinned. "That sounds good! Sure, let's go with that."
They then advance in the crowd packed training ground to find a small suitable spot beside two training dummies.
"Ok well first lets duel, then we can try to face some people and train our team work." Said MorTyous
You have been invited to a duel. Overall health bars will appear on top of each player, and a simulation of damage will take place.
"I Accept" he thought.
MorTyous grinned as he took a stance, summoning his Black Totems with a flick of his wrist. This time, he wasn't holding back. He slammed his hands into the ground, and a Lightning Totem sparked to life at his side, crackling with dark electricity. With every pulse, arcs of lightning shot out toward Ryuichi, each strike aiming to debuff him by sapping his agility and stamina.
"Think you can dodge everything?" MorTyous teased, watching as Ryuichi narrowly evaded the strikes.
Ryuichi kept his eyes sharp, darting from side to side, moving faster with each step as he anticipated MorTyous's next attack. But MorTyous was relentless. He slammed another totem into the ground—a Fire Totem, its flames roaring to life, licking the air with tongues of blazing heat. It sent out waves of fiery embers, scattering across the ground and setting small bursts of flame that Ryuichi had to weave between.
"Come on, hit me already" Ryuichi growled, but he knew MorTyous was far from done.
MorTyous laughed darkly and placed a Water Totem down with ease. A sudden torrent of water surged from the ground, rushing toward Ryuichi like a tidal wave. The water swirled and twisted as it flowed, its essence laden with a curse that made Ryuichi's limbs feel heavier with each passing moment, slowing him down further. He was drenched, but he powered through it, focusing on MorTyous's movements.
But then came the curses.
MorTyous's hands glowed with dark energy as he summoned a Swarm of Cursed Flies, the buzzing cloud surrounded Ryuichi. The flies were coated with shadow magic, biting into his skin, leaving behind poisonous bites that drained his energy and blurred his vision.
Ryuichi grimaced, the pain sharp, but he activated Spectral Walk to vanish into the shadows and shake off the curse. When he reappeared, he launched himself forward, slashing with his Venom Coated Blade, aiming for MorTyous's side.
MorTyous retaliated instantly, summoning a Nature Totem. Dark vines burst from the ground, wrapping themselves around Ryuichi's legs, tightening and restricting his movement as MorTyous unleashed another curse—this time, a Withering Curse, draining Ryuichi's health over time, weakening his strength.
"You're playing dirty," Ryuichi growled, his body weakening under the barrage of curses and elemental attacks.
"It's all part of the fun!" MorTyous shouted, raising his hands again as he called forth more lightning, fire, and water, each element striking in a rhythmic pattern of relentless debuffs.
But Ryuichi wasn't finished. Even weakened, his training kicked in. He moved quickly, severing the vines with his dagger and diving toward MorTyous, his Dark Strike piercing through the defenses, landing a clean hit.
MorTyous staggered back, his totems flickering with weakened energy. Ryuichi seized the moment, slicing through the final defenses with brutal efficiency, but the totem exploded as he walk by ending the fight for Ryuichi.
"Good fight" Ryuichi said, breathing heavily.
