Chapter 13: Chapter 13: The Rising Moon’s Shadow
The address Haeun provided was scrawled on a scrap of paper—a nondescript warehouse on the outskirts of Seoul. Jiho stood on the edge of a rooftop overlooking the location, his senses sharp and shadows pooling beneath his feet like living tendrils.
The warehouse seemed unassuming at first glance, but Jiho's trained eyes caught the subtle signs of activity: the faint glow of warding sigils on the walls, the telltale shimmer of mana around the entrances, and the steady movement of guards patrolling the perimeter. Rising Moon wasn't taking any chances.
"They're moving tonight," Haeun's voice echoed in his mind from their earlier conversation. "The Nexus core they're after is buried in the Gwanak Dungeon. They've been stockpiling supplies for weeks."
Jiho crouched low, his hand resting on the hilt of his dagger. Gwanak Dungeon wasn't just a high-level dungeon—it was infamous for its labyrinthine structure and the terrifying beasts that roamed its depths. The Nexus core wouldn't just be hard to find; it would be heavily guarded by the dungeon's natural defenses.
And if Rising Moon was after it, they wouldn't be going in unprepared.
Inside the Warehouse
Jiho slipped inside through a side entrance, the shadows wrapping around him like a second skin. The interior of the warehouse was a hive of activity. Hunters in Rising Moon uniforms moved in coordinated groups, checking weapons, stocking potions, and reviewing maps of the Gwanak Dungeon.
At the center of the room stood a man Jiho recognized instantly: Yoo Sanghoon, the leader of Rising Moon. A broad-shouldered figure with a permanent scowl etched onto his face, Sanghoon was known for his ruthlessness and cunning. He was flanked by two other hunters, both of whom radiated powerful mana signatures.
Jiho narrowed his eyes. This wasn't a normal raid team. This was a strike force.
"Everything is in place," Sanghoon barked, his voice carrying across the room. "We move in an hour. The core will be ours before sunrise."
"And what about resistance?" one of the hunters asked.
Sanghoon smirked. "The Guild has assured us that no one will interfere. If anyone does…well, that's why you're here."
The hunter nodded, gripping the hilt of a massive greatsword.
Jiho's grip on his dagger tightened. It was clear Rising Moon wasn't just hunting the Nexus core—they were prepared to eliminate anyone who got in their way. He could feel the weight of the moment pressing down on him. If he wanted to stop them, he couldn't afford to wait.
A Strategic Choice
As Jiho retreated back to the shadows, he weighed his options. Attacking Rising Moon head-on now would be suicide. Even with his abilities, the sheer number of hunters in the warehouse was overwhelming. But letting them enter the dungeon unopposed would mean risking them securing the Nexus core—and the power it contained.
He needed to be smarter than them.
Sliding into a corner, Jiho reached for the enchanted communicator Haeun had given him. She picked up after a single pulse.
"You're in?" she asked.
"Yes," Jiho replied. "Sanghoon's leading the operation himself. They're moving in an hour."
"Do you want me to—"
"No," Jiho interrupted. "Stay out of sight. I'll handle it."
There was a pause on the other end. "Jiho, you can't fight them all alone. Not even you."
"I don't need to," he said. "I just need to make sure they don't get the core."
Haeun sighed. "You're impossible. Fine. But I'll be nearby if things go south."
Jiho didn't respond, cutting the connection. He slipped out of the warehouse and back onto the rooftop, his mind racing.
If he couldn't stop them from entering the dungeon, he could at least make sure they wouldn't leave it alive.
Laying the Trap
Jiho spent the next hour preparing. Using the information he had gleaned from the maps inside the warehouse, he identified key chokepoints within the Gwanak Dungeon—narrow corridors, unstable ground, and natural bottlenecks where Rising Moon's numbers would work against them.
He planted enchanted traps, triggered dormant dungeon monsters, and set up diversions to split their forces. Every step was calculated to whittle them down piece by piece.
By the time Sanghoon and his team entered the dungeon, Jiho was already waiting for them in the shadows, his eyes glinting with cold determination.
The Hunt Begins
The first trap was sprung mere minutes after Rising Moon's entry. A swarm of venomous creepers, agitated by Jiho's mana, burst from the walls, forcing the hunters to scatter. In the chaos, Jiho struck, his dagger finding the neck of an isolated guard before retreating into the darkness.
Sanghoon roared in frustration as his team regrouped. "Stay together! Whoever's doing this won't escape alive!"
But Jiho was already three steps ahead. Every ambush, every diversion, every calculated strike chipped away at their numbers and their morale.
By the time they reached the chamber housing the Nexus core, only Sanghoon and his two strongest hunters remained. They were battered, bloodied, and furious.
Jiho stepped into the light, his dagger glinting ominously. The shadows behind him writhed like living things, reflecting his growing power.
"You made it farther than I expected," Jiho said coolly. "But this is as far as you go."
Sanghoon snarled, drawing his weapon. "You think you can stop me? Do you even know who you're dealing with?"
Jiho smirked. "I know enough. And I know you won't leave this dungeon alive."
