Chapter 43: What Can I Do?
The man raised an eyebrow upon seeing Leonar's ID, and his tone shifted to one slightly less confrontational.
"Oh… well, I guess everything's in order. Sorry, kid, but you don't exactly look like someone who could take on even a low-tier wolf."
Leonar shrugged, flashing a relaxed smile.
"Don't worry about it. I get that I don't look very professional right now."
"Either way, we need all the help we can get. A lot of people are evacuating to nearby shelters, but the situation here isn't improving."
"What exactly is going on?" Leonar asked, tilting his head slightly.
"It's the portal. For the first time in years, one appeared in the middle of the city, and what's strange is that monsters started pouring out immediately." The man paused, running a hand through his messy hair. "We've been fighting for over twenty-six minutes, and it's not slowing down. The hunters who've arrived are exhausted, and the creatures keep coming."
Leonar swallowed hard, realizing the man's explanation matched what the officer he'd spoken to earlier had said.
"Thanks for the info."
The officer gave him a skeptical look as Leonar turned away.
"Be careful. We don't need any more unnecessary casualties."
"I'll do my best."
Leonar walked away quickly, though in his mind, Eleonora's irritated voice rang out.
"So, what now? Are you planning to charge into battle without a plan, or are you just going to wander around like a tourist?"
"Relax," Leonar muttered, looking for a spot to stop. "I have an idea… sort of. But I need to ask you something."
"What is it now?" Eleonora replied, her tone tinged with exhaustion.
"Can you take control of my body and handle some of those monsters?"
There was a brief silence before Eleonora exploded.
"For the love of all that's holy! Didn't you hear me earlier? I can't do anything in this state!"
"Nothing at all?" Leonar pressed, ignoring her exasperated tone.
"There's no nearby water source, remember? I could try pulling some from the ground, but that would cause more damage than you'd like. And I doubt these humans would appreciate me destroying part of the city for your dumb idea."
Leonar rubbed his temple, letting out a frustrated sigh.
"But… what if we use that fire hydrant?"
Leonar pointed at a nearby red hydrant as he spoke.
Eleonora went silent for a moment before responding, clearly baffled.
"What's that?"
Leonar smirked slightly.
"It's a fire hydrant. They're always connected to the city's water system, so there's water inside. You can use it, right?"
Eleonora made a sound of disbelief, as though she couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"Do you really expect me to handle everything again? How about you do something for a change?"
"That's exactly what I'm doing." Leonar began walking toward the hydrant, ignoring the perplexed look from the officer he'd just spoken to.
'Why is he talking to himself?' the officer thought, baffled by Leonar's strange behavior.
"Come on, you can do it. Just try not to hurt the hunters or civilians. It shouldn't be that hard."
"'It shouldn't be that hard,'" Eleonora repeated with a nervous laugh. "You're a…! Fine. I'll try. But I'm not promising anything."
Leonar ignored the shift in her tone halfway through her response; he didn't care.
He'd managed to delegate the annoying job of leveling up!
"That's all I needed to hear."
Leonar's vision began to blur. He closed his eyes for a moment, and when he opened them again, he found himself in the mental space he'd imagined before.
There were a few changes now—the room had air conditioning, and the couch he was sitting on was a different color.
As he thought about playing a handheld console he used to own, it suddenly appeared in front of him!
"This isn't so bad," Leonar muttered, sinking into the couch as he powered on the console and prepared to distract himself.
…
In the real world, a huntress tending to the wounded noticed Leonar's odd behavior.
She watched him out of the corner of her eye, murmuring to herself,
"What the hell is that guy doing? Is he a hunter or just a lost nutcase?"
Meanwhile, Eleonora had taken control of Leonar's body. His warm brown eyes shifted to a bright, glowing red.
Though she found the attitude of the human she'd contracted with irritating, taking out the monsters on her own didn't sound so bad.
The only downside?
She couldn't just drown them all.
First, because flooding the area was nearly impossible in her current state, and second…
Leonar had forbidden it.
Eleonora clicked her tongue and ignored the curious stares and even the words of someone approaching her.
She had a task to focus on.
Taking a deep breath, she placed her hand on the cold metal surface.
"Alright… let's see what the hell I can do with this…"
