Chapter 14: Chapter 14 • A Kiss and I Forgive You
"Would you like to talk about what happened earlier?"
Sitting at a table near the mall's wide glass barrier, they savored their ice cream. From this point, they had a panoramic view of the bustle below, with the figures of people passing by and the inviting brightness of the stores. As he asked the question, Light fixed his gaze on hers.
"Can I help it?" She asked, clearly upset, without hiding her fear of broaching the topic.
"If it makes you uncomfortable, we can change the subject." Light said, giving her a serene smile. "How about we talk about something more relaxed? Like your plans for next weekend?"
Utaha thought for a moment.
"Actually, I don't have anything planned for this weekend." She replied, giving him a suggestive look. "Are you thinking of inviting me to a show?"
"Of course, why not?" Light replied, smiling. "Would you agree to join me next Saturday?"
"Hahaha, I admire your audacity." She let out a laugh and, bringing her hand to her face, ran her tongue over her lips to remove the ice cream.
Seeing her act so engagingly, Light's gaze became more intense.
"You look like you're trying to provoke something by looking at me like that..." Light commented. "Are you doing this on purpose?"
"I don't know what you're talking about~" replied Utaha, avoiding Light's gaze.
With a smooth movement, Utaha brought the ice cream to her lips and began to taste it slowly.
Noticing that she had gone off topic, Light decided not to press the issue any further.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Utaha asked. "Is it that interesting to watch me?"
"You're charming." Light replied, smiling. "Isn't it natural to want to admire something we find beautiful?"
"Oh, you know how to be annoying, don't you?" She grimaced and stuck out her tongue. "Now, look somewhere else."
Light let out a light laugh.
"Okay." He replied, directing his gaze to the lower floor of the mall. "Look, Utaha, do you see that man over there? He looks like he's about to propose to the young lady with him."
"Really? Where, where?" Utaha asked excitedly.
She quickly stood up and, leaning on the glass ledge, tried to identify the scene that Light had mentioned.
Light stood up, positioning himself next to Utaha.
"It's the man wearing that blue suit, holding a large teddy bear in his arms." Light explained, gently taking her hand and together they pointed in the man's direction. "Look, he's handing the bear to the saleswoman in that boutique."
"How can you be so sure that he intends to order it?" Utaha turned her attention to Light, curious.
"Look at his sweaty forehead and..." Light continued cautiously, "He seems to exhibit clear signs of nervousness and restlessness."
"Oh, you have a very keen eye, I wouldn't be able to notice those details from so far away..." She commented.
With a smile, Light nodded in recognition.
Utaha, until that moment, hadn't realized that Light was still holding her hand between his. Even after they had stopped pointing at the couple, he continued to hold her hand, leaning together on the ledge.
The man in the blue suit finished handing the large teddy bear to the saleswoman and, in a gesture that attracted the attention of everyone around, knelt down in front of the young woman, clearly making a request.
The young saleswoman, her eyes shining with surprise and emotion, nodded in acceptance.
The people around, realizing what was happening, began to applaud warmly.
Utaha turned to Light, her eyes expressing surprise: "That really happened!"
His gaze conveyed genuine astonishment. When Light had anticipated what the man would do, she had been skeptical. However, when she witnessed the event, surprise flashed across her face.
"Didn't I tell you?" he commented.
"Indeed you did. I think I should apologize for having doubted it." She confessed, smiling: "It was an incredible experience. I had no idea I'd see something like that today."
"One kiss and I forgive you." Light proposed, with a provocative look.
"Dreamer~" she retorted, showing her tongue dyed purple.
"Utaha, your tongue turned purple because of the ice cream," Light observed, laughing.
"Show me yours." She prodded: "I want to see if it's changed color too."
"How about we kiss? That way, you can taste the chocolate instead of just looking at it," suggested Light with a mischievous grin.
"Tsk! No need to show anymore..." Utaha retorted with a giggle. "You're looking pretty daring today, don't you think, Mr. Know-it-all?"
"What can I say?" Light replied, with a slightly embarrassed smile. "Your presence is so captivating that it's hard to resist the urge to kiss you."
Her cheeks flushed, she looked away, while her lips trembled slightly: "Stop saying such things..."
Utaha looked around, biting her lower lip lightly. Then she sighed.
Light laughed as he noticed her shyness.
In response, Utaha stepped on his foot.
"Ouch, that hurt..." Light complained, making an exaggerated expression.
"Exaggerated!" She retorted, laughing: "I didn't even press that hard." Consulting the watch on her wrist, Light mentioned: "It's getting late, I think we should go, what do you think?"
She also checked the time. Realizing that it was getting close to nine in the evening, she agreed: "Yeah, you're right. Let's go."
As they left the place and arrived at the train station, she said goodbye: "See you next time, Mr. Know-it-all~". Then she added: "About what you proposed before... I'll think about it. I'll let you know if I decide to accept."
"I'll be waiting," Light replied, waving goodbye.
Utaha's eyes sparkled with intelligence and a mischievous smile appeared on his face. When the announcement indicated that the train doors were about to close, she quickly approached Light with light, agile movements.
Rising on tiptoe, she kissed him on the cheek, almost brushing his lips against hers.
Whispering in his ear, she said teasingly: "That's what you put me through today~".
Just as lightly, she hurried back to the train, her eyes sparking with boldness.
"You didn't expect that, did you?" She said in a voice full of satisfaction.
However, as soon as the train moved, she crouched down with her face terribly red with embarrassment, clearly exhausted from having tried so hard earlier.
Outside, Light gave an amused smile as he left the train station.
Upon reaching a more secluded spot, and making sure with his Haki that no one was around, he formed a pair of wings made of lightning bolts of an intense purple hue and took flight.
