Chapter 242.2
Chapter 242.2. December
He gestures and explains that even the speed of the harvest is completely different. I see, it really is that different.
“It’s like the difference between someone who knows the formula and someone who doesn’t. If you know how to do it, your efficiency is completely different.”
That’s the skill level of an apprentice. After all, they’re at zero level. All they can do is make people realize things. That’s the skill humans need most, so it’s no surprise they’re in demand.
But for someone from the ruins, that 100,000 yen must’ve been quite a stretch.
“He said his wife banned him from drinking for a while.”
“That’s rough. Apprentices are popular, huh? It’s like you could form an army easily.”
Masamune responds coldly to Ohki-kun, who laughs boisterously.
“It’s not that easy to make soldiers. Even if they get the hang of it a bit, it’s meaningless without training.”
“Well, we plan to add practical training too. Can we make all the former SDF members adventurers if they wish?”
Masamune looks at his former colleague, hesitating as he asks. He’s a bit overwhelmed, considering the large number involved.
There are 5,000 former SDF members. If we make them all adventurers, dungeon clearing would progress rapidly. But we also need private soldiers. Not golden adventurers, just regular soldiers. Up until now, they’ve existed in a gray area, but they were all adventurers as well. I think it’s about time we needed a standing army.
“Let’s raise the good ones as soldiers. We can’t have all our private troops being cats, crows, or snakes.”
The Nyanyan Corps can already beat tanks. They can topple them with a swipe of their cat punch, and they have the speed to dodge shells. One of them could probably fight 100 fully armed soldiers head-on. Plus, their food is magic power and kibble.
But still, it’s not very hard-boiled, is it? If I go into battle with the Nyanyan Corps, I’ll look less like a hard-boiled man and more like the king of the jungle. Or a pet shop clerk.
And I can’t intimidate my enemies at all. Even though they know the power of shadow cats, people quickly get used to them. There are always people trying to pet them when they find them, or trying to feed them smoked meat.
The other day, a cat lover got mad at someone who tried to feed them, saying salt is bad for cats, and they got into an argument. Even after I explained that these aren’t regular cats and it’s fine, they wouldn’t listen, saying there’s food you can’t give to cats. Cat lovers are scary. Even when I glared at them, they didn’t flinch and just argued back. It was shocking.
Nobody tries to feed the cops or soldiers, so I think it’s about time we got some human soldiers.
“Yeah, we’ve gotta do that. So, we’ve got 300 soldiers. How many will we take from the SDF?”
“We also need cops. We’ll follow Japanese law, but we need people who won’t take bribes.”
There are no police in the special zone. There’s the Police Cat, but it’s only good for rough situations. To break up fights, catch fraudsters, and so on, we need actual cops.
And the people in the ruins will happily become cops. Even if they don’t side with criminals, they’ll gladly take bribes. I doubt they’d feel guilty about it.
“Yes, yes! I might be born to be a cop, boss! I’ve always wanted to be police commissioner!”
Ohki-kun raises his hand, eager to dedicate himself to social justice. As expected, Ohki-kun is a man of justice. Did he hear what I said? Hmm, maybe it’s not a bad idea.
“Yeah, maybe Ohki-kun would make a good police commissioner.”
Huh? Everyone is surprised by my words. Jun and Hana are surprised, but more than anyone, Ohki-kun himself looks shocked. Did he think I was joking?
“Wait, I’m gonna be police commissioner…? Uh, hehe. Got it! I’ll make this special zone the safest place around! I’ll show you the power of Tadakatsu Honda Tiger!”
“The top always has to take responsibility. I’m counting on you, Ohki-kun.”
“I’ll be your second, so don’t worry, Tadakatsu Honda Tiger.”
Laughing as he says this, Masamune pats Ohki-kun on the shoulder. At first, Ohki-kun was delighted by my words, but as he realized the gravity of it, he started dancing nervously. You can tell how excited he is by the way he’s stomping his feet.
“I think we need someone with a sense of responsibility! How about Masamune?”
“Masamune will be the head of the military. We’ll have 2,000 soldiers. We’ll need to hire clerks and the like too, so maybe 2,500? Prepare a lot of engineers. For vice-commanders, are Soma and Baba okay? I’ll pair Nanbu with Jun for the steelworks stuff, so he’s out.”
“Yeah, that’s probably the only way. Got it.”
Masamune scratches his cheek and agrees without fuss. He must’ve expected it, and it seems there’s no problem. Good, good.
“Then I’ll be the police auditor-nyan! I’ll make sure Ohki-kun doesn’t do anything shady-nyan!”
Karin twitches her cat ears as she suggests she’ll be working both for the police and the military. It seems everyone’s caught the justice fever.
“Shut up, you cat girl! You’re just planning to frame me and make a profit for yourself!”
“The auditor’s evidence is always absolute-nyan!”
For once, Ohki-kun figures out why Karin volunteered, and yells at her. But the cat girl just grins slyly and puffs out her chest.
As I leisurely watch the two bickering fruitlessly, Jun raises his hand.
“Sakimori-san, what are you really going to do?”
“Huh? The police commissioner will be Yukihana. She’s all fired up, and her martial arts skills are perfect for a cop, right? Isn’t that right, Yukihana?”
I ask Yukihana, and she silently gives her approval. No problem there.
“Wait, but if Yukihana’s not here…”
“No way she skipped out because it’s a boring meeting. Look, she’s hiding in that cardboard box over there. I can tell.”
And so, the police commissioner and military head are decided.
No problem, right?
