Echoes of Love and Lies

Chapter 14: The Unexpected Test

The following weeks seemed to pass in a blur. Ria was still cautious, still hesitant, but there was a subtle change in the air between her and Arun. They had moments of connection, shared laughter, and tender moments of closeness, but the trust that had once been the cornerstone of their relationship had yet to be fully restored.

Then came the unexpected test—one that neither of them could have foreseen.

One day, as Ria was walking out of her office building, she ran into Kiran. The very woman that had been the source of so much doubt and insecurity in her relationship with Arun. Kiran's presence sent a ripple of discomfort through Ria's chest, and for a moment, she froze.

"Ria," Kiran greeted her with a cool smile. "It's been a while."

Ria took a deep breath, her heart racing. She tried to keep her composure, reminding herself that Kiran was part of Arun's past, a past that he had promised was over.

"Hello, Kiran," Ria said, forcing a polite smile. "How have you been?"

"I've been good," Kiran replied, her eyes glinting with something Ria couldn't quite place. "Actually, I was just thinking about you and Arun. How's everything going between you two?"

Ria's stomach churned at the mention of Arun, but she did her best to remain calm. "We're fine," she said, her voice steady. "Why do you ask?"

Kiran's smile faltered, but she quickly recovered. "Oh, no reason. I just remember how close the three of us used to be. It's a bit strange, isn't it? That things changed so quickly."

Ria's heart clenched at the underlying meaning in Kiran's words. It was clear that Kiran was trying to sow doubt in her mind, to reignite the insecurities she had worked so hard to bury. But Ria refused to let her.

"I'm happy with Arun," Ria said firmly, her voice unwavering. "I trust him. And I'm sure he feels the same way."

Kiran's eyes glinted, as if she knew something Ria didn't. "Well, I'm sure. But sometimes, the past has a way of coming back when you least expect it."

Ria felt the weight of Kiran's words pressing down on her, but she didn't let it show. She forced a smile and turned to leave, her heart pounding in her chest. She wasn't sure what game Kiran was playing, but she knew one thing for sure: she couldn't let her insecurities dictate her future with Arun.
