Chapter 13: CHAPTER 13: A Brother’s Care
Kazu winced as he cautiously examined the stubborn wound that marred the side of his waist, an unsightly reminder of the ambush that had left him battered. No matter how he tried to will it away, a persistent throb of pain flared with every slight movement, like a relentless wave crashing against the shore of his concentration. It hindered his usual fluidity in motion, transforming simple tasks into daunting challenges. Reluctantly accepting the reality of his situation, he finally made his way to Daichi's quarters, fully aware that his cousin's renowned healing abilities were his best hope for relief.
As Kazu stepped inside, Daichi looked up from the tattered novel he had been engrossed in, a warm, inviting smile breaking through his earlier focus. "Kazu! What brings you here?" he exclaimed, leaning back in his chair as if to clear a space for him.
Kazu scratched the back of his neck, a sheepish grin creeping onto his face. "Ah, just a little… maintenance," he joked, lifting his shirt to reveal the angry gash that had marred his skin. "Turns out this thing doesn't want to heal on its own."
Daichi chuckled, setting his book aside with a soft thud as he motioned for Kazu to take a seat. "Well, let's take a look. Hold still, and I'll have this healed in no time."
With a gentle touch, Daichi positioned his hands above the wound. A soft, warm light radiated from his palms, illuminating the dim room as he concentrated, channelling his healing energy into Kazu's injured side. Gradually, Kazu felt the sharp pain begin to dissipate, replaced by an enveloping warmth that coursed through his muscles like a balm on a sunburn.
"There we go," Daichi murmured, his focus unwavering as the wound sealed itself, leaving nothing but smooth skin in its wake. However, as he withdrew his hands, a sudden wave of dizziness washed over him, the room spinning just a fraction. He staggered slightly, his pale complexion alarming against the warm glow of the healing light.
"Whoa—Daichi!" Kazu's instincts kicked in, his reflexes sharp and quick as he caught Daichi just before he toppled. He steadied him with a firm grip, his playful demeanour shifting to one of deep concern. "Hey, are you alright?"
Daichi nodded, albeit weakly. Despite his attempts to maintain his composure, his face betrayed him with a pallor that suggested more than simple fatigue. "Just… a little tired, I think," he replied, forcing a faint smile, though it didn't quite reach his eyes.
Kazu wasn't fooled. He placed a hand against Daichi's forehead, feeling his cousin's skin radiate heat, more intense than a fever. "Daichi, you're burning up! How long have you been feeling like this?" he demanded, worry etched across his features.
Daichi averted his gaze, reluctance draping over him like a heavy cloak. "It's nothing. I just overused my powers recently. I'll be fine with a little rest," he insisted, though his voice wavered.
"Yeah, well, you're getting that rest right now," Kazu replied firmly, guiding Daichi over to the couch and gently settling him down amidst the soft cushions. "Stay here, alright? I'll get you some water and medicine."
Despite Daichi's half-hearted protests, his body proved too weak to argue. Kazu returned moments later, cradling a glass of cool water and a damp cloth, pressing the cool fabric to Daichi's feverish forehead with a tenderness that spoke volumes. He even ventured into the kitchen, preparing a light, warm broth, and returned with it, a soft smile brightening his expression.
"Drink up. You need to take care of yourself too, you know. You're always looking out for us, but someone's gotta look out for you," Kazu said, his tone oscillating between playful teasing and heartfelt sincerity.
A small smile crept onto Daichi's lips, touched by the unexpected warmth of Kazu's thoughtfulness. "You're always surprising me, Kazu. Thank you… for being here," he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.
Kazu chuckled, settling down beside him with a playful nudge. "Hey, it's no problem. What are friends—or family—for, right? Just rest up. I've got your back."
As Daichi closed his eyes, surrendering to the comforting warmth of Kazu's presence, he felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude wash over him. It was a rare occasion for anyone to look out for him, as he had always carried the mantle of caregiver. But with Kazu by his side, he felt a profound sense of safety and appreciation, knowing he had someone who truly cared for him.
For the remainder of the day, Kazu stayed by Daichi's side, filling the quiet space with light-hearted chatter and funny anecdotes, each story a gentle balm for Daichi's weary spirit. They laughed, shared memories, and conversed well into the evening, dawning a renewed connection that tethered them together in unwavering solidarity.
By the time Daichi finally drifted off, his fever beginning to break, he felt a soothing warmth envelop him, a reminder that Kazu was there, watching over him. Kazu, quietly observing his cousin, realized just how precious their bond had become. In that moment, he vowed to always be present, for Daichi and for the whole team, just as they had been there for him.
