Chapter 2: Chapter 1
Chapter 1: Awakening Shadow
---
The moon hung heavy over the jagged peaks of the Veiled Mountains, its pale light fractured by storm clouds crawling across the sky. Kael Veyris stood on the precipice of the world, the weight of a thousand battles etched into his expression. His silver hair shimmered like starlight, flowing down his back as an unnatural breeze whispered warnings in the ancient tongue of Celestara.
He closed his eyes, letting the words seep into his mind. "The balance falters. Darkness stirs in the forgotten abyss. Heed the call, Kael, or all shall perish."
For years, Kael had learned to ignore the voices of the gods. Ever since the fateful night he became their vessel, their whispers haunted him, urging him to fight battles that left scars no mortal could heal. Tonight, however, the urgency in their tone made his heart clench. Something was different.
A sudden jolt of energy rippled through the air. Kael turned sharply, his crimson cloak billowing behind him. At the heart of the valley below, a pillar of light erupted into the heavens, blinding in its intensity. The ground trembled beneath his feet.
His instincts kicked in. With a flick of his wrist, a shimmering portal of gold and silver materialized before him. Stepping through it, he descended into the valley, his boots landing softly on the frost-covered grass.
As the light began to fade, Kael saw her.
A woman lay unconscious at the epicenter of the disturbance, her figure draped in tattered white robes that glowed faintly in the moonlight. Long raven hair cascaded around her, framing a face so serene it seemed otherworldly.
But what caught Kael's attention most was the faint aura of power surrounding her—a presence that felt both ancient and familiar. His chest tightened.
"Who are you?" he muttered under his breath, kneeling beside her.
As if in response, her eyes fluttered open, revealing irises like molten gold. The moment their gazes met, an inexplicable force surged through Kael, setting his veins alight.
"You…" she whispered, her voice barely audible. "You're the one they spoke of… the guardian…"
Her words sent a chill down his spine.
"Rest," Kael said, his tone softer than he intended. "You're safe now."
But before he could lift her, a guttural roar echoed through the valley. Shadows emerged from the treeline, grotesque creatures with eyes like burning coals and jagged claws gleaming in the darkness.
Kael rose to his full height, his hand extending to summon his blade—a weapon forged from celestial fire. Its golden edge hissed as it sliced through the air, illuminating the battlefield.
He glanced back at the woman. Her gaze was locked on the approaching creatures, terror flickering across her face.
"Stay behind me," he commanded.
She nodded, clutching her arms as if to shield herself from the encroaching danger.
The first creature lunged, its claws aimed for Kael's throat. In a blur of motion, he sidestepped and delivered a clean slash, reducing it to ash. More followed, but Kael was a storm of precision and power, each strike of his blade cutting through the darkness.
Despite his focus, he couldn't shake the feeling that these creatures weren't here by chance. They were drawn to something—or someone.
When the last shadow fell, Kael turned back to the woman. She stared at him with wide eyes, her expression a mixture of awe and fear.
"You… you're not human," she said, her voice trembling.
"No," Kael replied, his tone neutral. "Not entirely."
Before she could respond, her knees buckled, and Kael caught her just in time. Her skin was cold to the touch, and her breathing shallow.
"You're weak," he said, concern flickering in his crimson eyes. "I need to get you somewhere safe."
"Wait," she murmured, clutching his sleeve. "You need to know… they're coming for me… the shadows…"
Her words faded as she slipped into unconsciousness.
Kael's jaw tightened. Whatever danger she carried, it was now his responsibility. With a sigh, he lifted her into his arms and stepped through another portal, leaving the blood-stained valley behind.
