Chapter 3: Chapter 3: The Odd Lottery
Du Sheng carefully sifted through his memories.
Before his rebirth, besides appearing in Special Police Flying Dragon, his foster father had managed to secure him an audition for The Legend of the Condor Heroes.
Thanks to his martial arts background, he had been cast as Chagatai, the second son of Genghis Khan.
However, the role was so minor that his name appeared in the very last pages of the cast list—essentially a supporting character to "Törögene." Whether the audience would even remember his face was uncertain.
So where did all these reputation points come from?
Could it have been from the earlier exposé about "uncovering industry scandals"?
Regardless, this was a good thing.
The upcoming auditions would likely require him to boost his acting skills, as well as his Eight Extremities Fist proficiency.
As for singing, it might not seem urgent, but it was still a valuable livelihood skill.
Suppressing his random thoughts, Du Sheng glanced at his overall evaluation.
"This includes my profession, status, combat ability, and even physical fitness. Seems pretty important.
"If this rating improves, the rewards might extend beyond just extra draws and storage capacity."
He speculated that once his evaluation reached a certain level, he might unlock additional sources of reputation points, such as admiration, disdain, love, or hatred.
"To rake in reputation points, I might need to keep stirring things up…"
Would that mean leaning heavily into a "black-and-red" (polarizing) persona?
As Lu Xun once said: "Better to wrong the world than let the world wrong me."
Du Sheng turned his attention to the lottery interface.
The next moment, a notification popped up:
[Special Police Flying Dragon has completed filming. Do you wish to proceed with settlement?]
[Note: The closer your performance aligns with the character and the greater their screen time, the higher the quality of the rewards.]
"Huh? The film wrapped up a few days ago, and I can still claim rewards?"
Though unexpected, Du Sheng was pleasantly surprised. After all, who doesn't like free stuff?
[Settle!]
[Your current overall evaluation is F. Annual lottery attempts: 1/10. Proceed with the draw?]
"What is this, a blind box? I can't even see the reward pool!"
After skimming the lottery interface, all he saw was a brief description of a "19-into-7" draw mechanic.
Without overthinking, he silently commanded: [Draw!]
Whoosh!
The roulette lit up, revealing 19 cards in blue, green, white, and gray hues.
No purple cards, as expected.
After all, his role had been a small-time drug cartel lackey with minimal screen time. The rewards were bound to be mediocre.
But given his current lack of skills, anything was better than nothing.
With a single thought, the roulette began spinning counterclockwise at high speed.
Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh!
Seven cards burst into radiant light, freezing mid-spin to reveal the rewards:
[Congratulations! You have received a box of Durex!]
[Congratulations! You have gained Driving Proficiency (Green)!]
[Congratulations! You have received a Steel Rod!]
[Congratulations! You have received a pair of Silver Bracelets!]
[Congratulations! You have gained Survival Skills: Deserted Island Edition!]
[Congratulations! You have unlocked the skill Indulgence (Lv1/Green)!]
[Congratulations! You have received 10 packs of Moist Towelettes!]
Seeing the first three items, Du Sheng nearly cursed out loud.
"A box of Durex?!"
Most people would use up more than that in one night. Who were they underestimating here?
Though, on second thought, these could double as water containers or emergency bandages—quite practical.
"Deserted Island Survival Skills?!"
Were these from one of those ridiculous B-movie dramas? Could they even be taken seriously?
In his mind, he pictured a lone man stranded on an island, relentlessly pursued by a horde of beautiful women.
If not for the later rewards being somewhat useful, he might have regretted wasting one of his annual draws.
As two of the rewards' imprints fused into his consciousness, survival skills and driving techniques began to crystallize in his mind.
"Huh! Surprisingly legitimate."
Even if he didn't end up needing wilderness survival knowledge, it could still help him mitigate risks in life.
And Driving Proficiency? Extremely practical.
In his previous life, while he had earned a driver's license, he was part of the paycheck-to-paycheck crowd and rarely used it. Years later, he had forgotten most of what he learned.
His current self hadn't even taken the driving test. His skills were limited to riding bicycles and motorcycles, with some hesitant experience in "driving women crazy"—hardly worth mentioning.
Yet now, his imprinted knowledge spanned a wide range of vehicles, from cars to planes, ships to tanks, even naval vessels. Driving all of them came naturally to him.
Although it seemed a bit far-fetched, it was undeniably a useful skill.
"A pair of silver bracelets?"
Was this something a low-level lackey character should have?
"Well, no complaints. Could come in handy for… interrogating bad guys, yeah, that's it!"
Satisfied, Du Sheng nodded approvingly.
Then he looked at the lone skill he had acquired, his expression turning increasingly peculiar.
[Indulgence (Lv1/Green): You yearn for a life of indulgence. You possess a unique talent, capable of boundless stamina day and night.*]
Du Sheng blinked, convinced he must have read it wrong. He reread the description.
Nope, he hadn't misread it. And the sudden influx of over a decade's worth of experience in his mind confirmed it wasn't a joke.
Unbelievable!
"Is it because the character I played worked as a 'club bouncer' that I drew this absurd skill?"
After some thought, it seemed plausible.
On second thought, this skill might actually be quite useful.
The entertainment industry was a treacherous place. After his encounter with Fan Bingbing, he had been worried about not being able to keep up.
But now, this unique talent seemed like a game-changer.
Not just for "long swims"—even exploring the deep end seemed entirely manageable.
For a skill marked as green, this was highly unscientific.
Du Sheng felt it deserved to be purple at the very least!
At a minimum, his understanding of "intimacy as an art form" had deepened considerably, and he felt far more confident in this area.
"This trip was worth it!"
Du Sheng was thoroughly satisfied. Just this one skill alone was worth a fortune.
He felt an almost uncontrollable urge to test his newfound skill on someone.
Unfortunately, the only person nearby was an elderly cleaning lady…
Oh well. There would be plenty of opportunities in the future.
Didn't that little vixen Fan Bingbing want to suppress him? Soon, she'd find out what it meant to be a "typewriter from Chicago."
As for the other items:
The steel rod would serve well as a blunt weapon—perfect for backup in tricky situations.
"And the towelettes? What's with this junk?"
After skimming the Japanese packaging, Du Sheng disdainfully tossed them into his lottery inventory.
With his new signature skill, he doubted he'd need such tools anytime soon.
Collecting his thoughts, Du Sheng sighed.
"Too bad I didn't draw anything to boost my career."
Still, the Jin Yong drama audition was on the horizon.
If he played his cards right, he might secure two more lottery attempts in the near future!
Du Sheng's heart brimmed with anticipation.
After grabbing a quick meal from a street vendor, he hopped onto a bus back to his rented apartment.
Bored during the ride, he began organizing his thoughts about his rebirth.
Some details were still fuzzy, and even the timeline of this world felt slightly off.
He mused over ideas like buyin
g lottery tickets, betting on the World Cup, investing in Bitcoin, or funding luxury car brands to achieve overnight wealth.
If any of those worked, he wouldn't need to grind so hard!
