Eternal Echoes: A Dance with Darkness

Chapter 13: Chapter Thirteen

As I opened my eyes, I was greeted by the sight of a vibrant blue sky, the sun shining brightly overhead. I found myself lying in a vast open field, surrounded by trees that bordered a dense forest in the distance. Perched atop a small hill, I observed the tree line to the north and the forest behind me. My hair, half down and braided, cascaded over my shoulders, complementing the sheer, white summer dress that adorned my figure. Glancing down, I noticed my bare feet and hoped there were no thorns or stickers to contend with.

Taking in the serene landscape, my eyes settled on a charming cabin nestled in the center of the field, wisps of smoke curling from its chimney. Despite the smoke, the weather felt pleasantly warm, dispelling any notion of cold. The cabin, constructed from sturdy, aged wood, exuded a timeless strength that seemed capable of enduring for several more centuries.

As I strolled through the knee-high grass, I marveled at how it swayed gracefully in the gentle breeze. The field was dotted with flowers, each one adding a splash of color to the landscape - a rose here, a daffodil there.

My attention was suddenly drawn to a man standing at a distance from the house, his gaze fixed as if he were anticipating something. Intrigued, I started to make my way towards him when two magnificent horses came galloping past, frolicking as if engaged in a game of tag. I couldn't help but smile at the sight - I had never seen such beautiful horses before, let alone ones so playful.

One of the horses was predominantly white with tan markings on its legs, while the other resembled a dairy cow with its white coat adorned with black splotches. As they reached the cabin, they seemed to vanish into thin air, leaving me bewildered. How could such large creatures disappear into thin air? It was as if they had a magical ability to conceal themselves.

I glanced over at the man and continued to stride towards him, feeling a pang of disappointment as I noticed the horses were no longer in sight. Suddenly, I came to a halt when I realized who I was approaching.

"Aiden!" I exclaimed with excitement.

The man spun around, his face a mix of shock and joy. As he walked towards me, he enveloped me in a warm hug and planted a kiss on my cheek. "How did you get here?" he asked, clearly astonished.

"I'm not sure... I fell asleep and then suddenly found myself here," I replied, pausing to see his reaction. When he remained silent, I pressed on. "Is this all just a dream? Where exactly are we?"

"We are currently revisiting a memory, Ember. This is a place where we once lived," Aiden explained before our attention was diverted by a man and woman of our age fleeing from the house in opposite directions towards the forest. Fear gripped Aiden’s expression before he turned back to me. "You shouldn't be here," he warned.

Confused, I gazed at him and asked, "But didn't you want me to remember?"

"No, I asked if you had any memories. I never said I wanted you to remember them! Some of them are..." He didn't finish his statement, becoming lost in thought.

As I walked towards the cabin, I asked, "So we used to live here?"

"Yes... And we were very happy, until that day," he replied sadly.

I gave Aiden a questioning look, but he wouldn’t continue. "Did we have horses? How is it they disappeared?" I asked.

He finally smiled as he explained, "Those were our horses. Some things in memories, such as animals or objects, cannot stay focused in one's mind. For example, this is your first time remembering, so all the pieces may not be clear or they may disappear. Other times, if an animal or object disappears, it means you weren't paying much attention to them in the first place, so it would seem as though they just vanished."

We continued walking until we reached the southern tree line.

"We should turn back, my love," he said.

"Why?" I asked, puzzled by his reluctance.

"Because what lies beyond those trees is something you shouldn't see," he replied.

I gazed at the thick forest ahead, contemplating his words. "But shouldn't I be aware of what's happening?" I started to say, but when I turned to look at Aiden, he had vanished.

I stood still, scanning the vast countryside and calling out his name. After a few minutes of waiting, I decided to stay put and let him come back to me. It would be easier for him to find me where we last stood together.

As I waited, I sat cross-legged on the ground, absentmindedly twirling the grass between my fingers. Lost in contemplation, I was abruptly jolted from my thoughts by the sound of a branch snapping behind me. Whipping my head around, I was met with the sight of a deer gazing directly at me. "Hello," I greeted the creature tentatively, half-hoping for a response. There was something captivating about the deer that compelled me to observe it more closely. Slowly rising to my feet, I asked, "What brings you out here?" A foolish question to pose to a deer, I realized as I cautiously approached it. However, before I could make any further attempts at communication, the deer bolted into the forest. "Wait!" I called out, as I chased it.

Upon entering the forest, the trees were sparse and widely spaced, but as I delved deeper, the foliage grew denser and the trees clustered closer together. The forest floor was blanketed with fallen leaves, and vegetation was scarce. I had lost track of time as I pursued the deer, but I was certain that I had lost sight of it at least a mile back.

I paused beneath the towering branches of a massive oak tree, taking a moment to catch my breath and survey my surroundings. The trees stood like ancient sentinels, casting long shadows that blocked the sun's light and warmth. Despite the heat, I shivered as beads of sweat trickled down my exposed skin. Should I turn back, or press on? I pondered this question as I stood there, contemplating my next move.

As I weighed my options, I was startled by a sudden crunching sound that broke the silence. Footsteps, I realized, my heart racing as I instinctively ducked behind the tree for cover. The sound ceased on the other side, replaced by the heavy, labored breathing of an unseen presence.

I cautiously approached the massive oak tree, taking a few steps to catch a glimpse of the person standing on the other side. To my surprise, it was the same girl who had fled from the cabin earlier! She appeared to be around my age, with long brunette hair that matched my own. As she scanned the forest, searching for something or someone, her eyes met mine, but it was as if she didn't see me at all. Intrigued, I moved closer to her, studying her features in disbelief. To my shock, she bore a striking resemblance to me - from her long brunette hair and icy blue eyes to her nose and facial bone structure. The realization left me bewildered. What could possibly explain this uncanny resemblance?

"Ember!" A voice called out from behind me, causing both of us to turn and see who had called our names. To our surprise, it was Aiden! However, he looked different from the last time I had seen him. His face appeared tired, and he had grown some facial hair that I found rather unappealing. Perhaps the beard was the fashion of the era we found ourselves in. It was uncanny how much Aiden and his Ember resembled us.

Aiden embraced his Ember, causing tears to well up in her eyes and cascade down her cheeks. "We must keep moving, my love," Aiden urged her.

She nodded in agreement, and they began to run. Intrigued, I followed closely behind, eager to discover what would unfold next. Deeper and deeper they ventured into the darkening woods until a thunderous voice stopped them in their tracks.

"Aiden," the disembodied voice began to laugh, "Do you truly believe that you can prevent the girl from reaching the King?" Suddenly, a man emerged from the shadows behind a tree. It was Easton!

Aiden gazed at his beloved Ember and urged her to flee. "No... I cannot leave without you!" she pleaded.

"I will find you, my love. Trust me. Now, go!" he replied firmly.

She kissed him, knowing it would be the last time, and then swiftly ran.

I stood there, torn between my past self and the new Aiden before me. Fortunately, the unfolding events quickly captured my attention and made the decision for me.

"Why do you defy the King's orders, Aiden? You were once one of his most trusted soldiers," Easton taunted with a sinister grin.
