Ninth Lady saw her looking at the straw mats and, without thinking, led her around the corner to the vegetable patch. She lifted the corner of the straw mat and showed her the radishes underneath with a grin.

The radishes weren’t growing particularly well; their leaves were dry and yellow, and their thin, small roots were no thicker than a thumb.

“Beidi is bitterly cold, and there are only a few warm days in a year. It’s difficult to grow vegetables here; it’s not bad that the radishes can grow at all.”

Ninth Lady looked at the small vegetable patch with joy and explained with a smile.
