Chapter 28: The Exiled Young Lady Enjoys the Harvest Festival
The day of the Harvest Festival had arrived. The foods I was serving included bread, wild boar steaks, wild boar stew, and ale.
Of course, I can’t cook, so Marie and G-77 Nana were the ones actually preparing the dishes.
As for the ale, it was brewed in the village. There’s an expert brewer, Grandma Nora, who’s using G-101 to produce a large quantity.
Though, I can’t drink it myself.
Anyway, by the time of the festival, the central square of the village was already crowded, even though it was still early afternoon.
The villagers were already in high spirits, clapping their hands, singing, and dancing to an unfamiliar rhythm.
It looked like they were having a lot of fun.
I wanted to join in, but I had things to do first.
The Harvest Festival involves a ritual to give thanks to the gods, but since there’s no church in the village, we don’t have a priest to oversee the ceremony.
So, as the lord, I had to conduct the ritual myself.
Until that was done, I had to wait… though, from the looks of it, the villagers seemed to be getting quite tipsy already.
I haven’t even served the ale yet!
*Clang!* *Clang!*
The second bell of the afternoon rang through the village.
Alright, it’s time. Let’s do our best!
I gave myself a small pep talk, then put on the crown made of wheat ears for the ceremony and headed outside. Marie followed closely behind.
Despite the earlier noise, the villagers went silent and watched me as I emerged from the lord’s residence.
Yeah, I’m a bit nervous.
But it’s going to be fine. I can do this!
I walked slowly to the stage set up in the central square, careful not to step on the hem of my white ceremonial dress.
On the stage was an altar, with a pig tied up and placed in a cage, ready for sacrifice.
I knelt before the altar and took a deep breath.
“Oh, gods in heaven! I, Olivia Ainsley, as the Baroness of Scarletford, represent the people of Scarletford in expressing our gratitude for your guidance through the brilliant sun and the radiant moon, and for the blessings bestowed upon our mother earth. I offer this dance in thanks!”
I stood up and began to perform the ritual dance.
The ritual dance is something any noblewoman would learn. Though it’s my first time performing it in public, I’ve been trained by Marie since I was five, so I’m somewhat familiar with it.
Without any musical accompaniment, it’s a bit challenging, but I kept the rhythm in my head and channeled my magical energy to match the movements.
Since my magic is dark, it produces a black light, which might be a bit frightening for ordinary people.
Glancing at the audience, they didn’t seem scared.
Oh, right. The villagers must be used to it by now.
With that thought, I completed the ritual dance.
Phew. It was a bit tiring, but I felt a sense of accomplishment.
As I looked toward the crowd, Will and the others climbed onto the stage.
“To the gods. As a token of our gratitude, we offer this life.”
Will and his companions then drove their swords into the pig in the cage, ending its life.
Though offering a living creature as a sacrifice might seem cruel, it’s a customary practice in Scarletford and many other places.
Oh, and of course, the pig will be eaten later. It won’t go to waste.
With the ritual complete, I stepped down from the stage.
After changing my clothes, I returned to find that the pig had been taken off the stage and was now roasting over the central bonfire.
“Everyone! It’s time for the party! We’ve got bread, meat, stew, and ale ready, so let’s eat and give thanks to the gods!”
“Woohooo!”
“Your Ladyship!”
The villagers’ excitement surged.
“Each person gets one plate, so please get yours from that table! And the ale is at the other table. It’s unlimited until it runs out!”
“Woohooo!”
The men cheered at the mention of unlimited ale.
Haha, maybe they like the ale more than the food?
“But! Don’t drink too much and pass out!”
“Yay!”
“Your Ladyship!”
“Angel!”
“Wait! Don’t call me an angel!”
The villagers were so absorbed in the food and drinks that they hardly seemed to listen to me.
Oh well, it’s a festival, so it’s fine to let loose once in a while, right?
The villagers drank beer, and soon handclapping, singing, and dancing began. Helena approached me.
“My Lady! Let’s dance together!”
“Huh? But I don’t know how to dance that well.”
“It’s fine! Everyone is improvising!”
“Oh, really? Well then…”
“Yay, this way!”
I followed Helena into the circle of dancers.
The rhythm was loose, and the singing was a bit off-key, but I tried to match the movements and dance along.
Oh? Haha, this is actually quite fun.
“My Lady! Like this!”
Helena twirled around happily.
Oh! If you can do it, then I’ll give it a try too!
I twirled in response, determined not to be outdone.
Hehe. Marie taught me not only the ritual dance but also social dancing, so I can handle this!
“Oh! My Lady, you’re amazing!”
Helena continued twirling, and soon other children began to mimic her.
Hmm! I can’t lose here!
I twirled along with them, and then…
Before long, I was the only one standing.
It seemed everyone else was dizzy from the endless spinning.
“M-My Lady… how come you’re not dizzy…”
“Hehe, you’re still no match for me.”
But, I must admit, I’m a bit exhausted and a little sleepy. Maybe it’s time to call it a night.
“Everyone, keep enjoying yourselves!”
Feeling pleasantly tired, I headed back to my room.
