Chapter 3: The Exiled Young Girl Uncovers the Village Chief’s True Identity
“My Lady, actually, we weren’t originally from this village,”
When we started questioning in the village chief’s house, Will suddenly said that.
“Is that so? Then when did you come here?”
“About last summer.”
“I see. So you’ve been living here for about eight months?”
“Yeah.”
“Why?”
“Um…”
Will hesitated, looking as though it was hard for him to say, but then with a determined expression, he made an astonishing confession.
“Actually, we were part of a band of thieves called the Red Bear Band…”
“What? Will, you were a thief?!”
“Yeah…”
“So, what happened to the previous village chief? Did you—”
“No, it’s not like that!”
“Then why is a thief the village chief?”
“Well, you see, before we arrived here, it seems the village was attacked by goblins. And the knight who was the village chief at that time got killed…”
“I see.”
“My Lady, do you really believe what he’s saying!?”
Marie abruptly interjected into the conversation.
“Yes, of course. After all, Will made an oath with sacred magic. He can’t lie to me.”
“Of course! I’m not lying!”
“I see…”
Marie looked reluctantly but seemed to accept it.
“So, Will, when did this attack happen?”
“The attack?”
“Yeah.”
“Let me see… It was maybe two months? No, maybe three months before we arrived.”
“Hmm, so it was several months ago.”
“Yeah.”
“So, why are you thieves still staying in the village? Isn’t it normal for thieves to plunder and then move on?”
“Well… We messed up and now we want to get out of the game…”
“I see. What did you do?”
“Well, we stole from traveling merchants and such…”
“Princess! It must be more than just theft! They wouldn’t be trying to escape just for theft!”
Marie seemed to imply that they must have committed murder or human trafficking as well.
Yeah, I would think so too.
However, in this world, such things are common occurrences. Therefore, minor crimes often don’t receive detailed investigation, leading to the proliferation of thieves.
Of course, if the damage becomes significant enough, knights or adventurers will come to eliminate them.
“But is that all?”
“No! Just theft!”
“Hmm?”
“It’s just that we ended up attacking something really bad…”
“Really bad? Who did you attack?”
“Well… a carriage with a priest from the Light Church…”
“Oh…”
That certainly sounds problematic.
The Light Church is the state religion of the Godwin Kingdom where we live, and it wields immense power due to its political connections. As its name suggests, it worships the god of light and recognizes only light holy magic.
However, this has led to widespread zombie outbreaks, as sending souls that remain due to lingering attachments to the afterlife is the domain of dark holy magic.
Light holy magic governs the day, the sun, life, birth, and purification, while dark holy magic governs the night, the moon, death, rebirth, and souls.
Light holy magic can purify zombies created by light magic. However, this results in the soul’s annihilation, preventing it from returning to the cycle of reincarnation.
Despite this, the fact that priests of the Light Church are dealing with visible threats like zombies contributes to the church’s high standing.
That’s the setting of this world.
I don’t know why rebirth is included in dark magic. Some online theories suggest it was added to show cruel scenes of villainous noble ladies forcing their subordinates to fight with regenerated limbs.
Also, light holy magic can heal injuries and illnesses, but it cannot perform regeneration, while dark magic cannot heal injuries or illnesses.
From the perspective of my previous life, if regeneration is possible, then healing injuries should be too, but…
Well, it’s a game for girls, so the creators probably didn’t think too deeply about it.
But setting aside these digressions, about Will and the others’ treatment…
“Okay, understood. For now, let’s keep this quiet until it’s discovered.”
“Young Lady!?”
“Is that alright!?”
“Yes.”
“My Lady! To let criminals go free like this!”
“Marie, based on what we’ve heard, this village is short on men, right? Due to the goblin attack.”
“That may be true, but…”
“Then we can’t execute them.”
“But…”
“Of course, I’m not letting them off scot-free. I’ll have all former thieves take an oath.”
“What? That oath?”
“Yes. After all, thieves are usually executed without question, especially if they’ve attacked a priest from the Light Church.”
Will glanced at me briefly, then averted his eyes awkwardly.
“But as the lord, I have judicial authority. So, I’ll decide that instead of execution, it will be life imprisonment. I’ll make them take an oath as proof of that and have them work here in the village. Is that okay?”
Marie looked quite puzzled by my words.
“After all, if they take an oath of absolute obedience, if I order them to die, they must comply. I think that’s a sufficient punishment, and having more men for Scarletford would be beneficial too.”
“My Lady…”
“Of course, if they do anything after coming to Scarletford, that’s a different story.”
I turned to Will.
“You understand that, right?”
Will nodded with a tense expression.
“Alright, then. Will, explain the situation to all the former thieves and bring them here.”
“Understood…”
Will left the house quickly with a stiff expression.
“My Lady.”
“Hmm? What is it, Marie?”
“When I talk with you, I often wonder, are you really eight years old? It feels like I’m talking to an adult.”
“Marie, you’re the one who’s been raising me since I was a baby.”
“That’s true, but…”
“Good grief, Marie…”
I let out a small sigh.
“Alright, let’s end this discussion here. We should check the state of the village now. Given this situation, there probably aren’t any proper records, and there might still be lingering souls.”
“As you wish.”
