Chapter 52: The Banished Girl Exterminates Monsters
“Baroness~”
“Welcome home!”
When we returned to Scarlettford, the villagers all came out to welcome us.
“Yeah, I’m back. Was everything okay while I was gone?”
“Yes!”
“The planting is going smoothly.”
“I see, that’s good to hear.”
Seeing that everyone was doing well made me breathe a sigh of relief.
“Tony, what about the furs I sent ahead?”
“Yup, we’ve already started the initial processing.”
“Thanks. Do they seem usable?”
“Some are a bit damaged, so we’ll have to trim some parts off, but other than that, they should be fine as full pieces.”
The damaged ones must be from the Forest Wolves that my Forest Wolf and Crescent Bear skeletons took down. Since I didn’t immobilize them completely, it was inevitable that they wouldn’t be in perfect condition.
“I see. Got it. Thanks, I’ll leave the rest to you.”
“Sure thing.”
Next, I called out to Will.
“Will.”
“Hey, Baroness. Welcome back.”
“Yeah, thanks. So, about the situation…”
I explained what had happened at the third campsite.
“I want to think of some countermeasures, though…”
“Hmm, well, I guess like with the village, the best option is probably moats and drawbridges, huh?”
“Yeah, seems like it. It’ll be a big project, but we don’t have much choice.”
“Indeed.”
“Thanks. Alright, I’m heading home now. I’m exhausted. And if any of you have any problems, don’t hesitate to come to me.”
With that, we made our way back to the house.
After that, we began reconstruction work at the three campsites along the highway. We dug moats and set up drawbridges.
The work was, of course, entirely done by skeletons, while I focused on exterminating monsters.
I checked with Will, and as Simon had said, Crescent Bears were indeed very dangerous monsters.
Apparently, they’re so dangerous that most adventurers, even those specializing in monster hunting, avoid fighting them if they can.
As a result, merchants have to pay a lot of money for powerful guards, which drives up the cost of goods.
Since we’re still quite poor, higher prices are a problem.
So, I brought Will and the others to the first campsite. Goblin skeletons were already hard at work digging the moat.
“So, this is the campsite?”
“And Crescent Bears appear here?”
“Huh? No, Patrick, the Crescent Bears showed up at the third campsite.”
“Oh, right.”
“Yeah, exactly.”
“But, Baroness, Bitterley is in Count Lazlo’s domain, right?”
“Yes, it is.”
Patrick then jumped in with a question.
“Will, what do you mean by ‘that’?”
“Oh, well, Count Lazlo is also known as the ‘Inferno Count.’ He’s the guardian who protects the kingdom from the monsters of the Dark Forest.”
“Oh, I see.”
“Yeah, he’s said to use an incredible flame that wipes out monsters.”
“I heard that the massive walls around Bitterley were built by Count Lazlo too.”
“Really?”
“Yep, that’s what makes him a hero of the town. Muriel, the mayor’s daughter in Bitterley, told me that.”
“Wow!”
“But Crescent Bears appeared near his town?”
“Well, they were drawn in, actually.”
“Drawn in?”
“Yeah, because of the smell of barbecued meat.”
“Wait, what!? Barbecue!?”
“Yeah. I wanted to test the defensive capabilities of the campsite.”
“…Right. Makes sense that, with you around, monsters wouldn’t be a problem.”
“Pretty much.”
“Uh… Baroness, are you planning to barbecue here too?”
“Huh? Yeah, of course. Now that I know it’s an efficient way to lure them in.”
“…”
Both of them fell silent.
“What’s wrong?”
“N-no, nothing at all.”
“Okay then. Let’s wait a bit while the skeletons catch some meat.”
“Sure thing.”
With that, we climbed up the walls and watched the progress of the construction.
Over the course of the next week, we continued luring monsters and exterminating so many that it became too tedious to keep count.
Crescent Bears also seemed to live in this area, and several of them attacked us daily.
However, the most frequent attackers were Forest Wolves.
We also dealt with Wild Boars, Forest Deer, and the usual Goblins, along with some new faces like Giant Rats—huge rodent monsters—and Horn Rabbits, rabbits with horns.
The furs and meat from everything except the Goblins were sent back to Scarlettford by the skeletons, and I used the bones to create new skeletons.
We stored some of the meat in the ice cellar in the garden, while the rest went straight into the bellies of the villagers. The surplus was dried and preserved.
Oh, by the way, I named the Giant Rats ‘GR’ and the Horn Rabbits ‘HR.’ This way, there’s no chance of mix-ups, and it feels pretty neat, doesn’t it?
