Chapter 59: The Exiled Young Girl Discovers Treasure in the River
Recently, there haven’t been any particular troubles, and peaceful days have continued. Occasionally, small groups of goblins come near, but the skeletons spot them early and convert them into new skeletons.
Additionally, after thoroughly eliminating monsters from the areas surrounding the road to Bitterley, monsters no longer appear near the road.
However, maybe because of this, it seems like the monsters have moved to the area stretching from the northwest to the east. I don’t have the skeletons monitoring that far out, so I can’t say for sure.
Speaking of roads, there’s also a path leading to Clarinton in the southeast, but I haven’t maintained it since that incident. By now, it’s probably returned to nature.
Well, it’s not a problem. I have no interest in a town run by thugs like that.
If anything, it might be better to further develop the Demon Forest and connect a road to another northern territory. If we could shortcut through the forest, there might be demand for it.
Plus, if I ever get into a conflict with Count Lazlo, it could serve as an alternative route.
The problem is I don’t really know the geography in that direction. If we put all that effort into building a road only to find out it leads to Southbury’s domain, it would be pointless.
One day, while I was thinking about all of this, Scarlettford was struck by a storm. It was such a powerful storm that even the oldest residents couldn’t recall anything like it. When morning came, the aftermath was devastating—earthworks and stone walls had collapsed, roofs had blown off, and there was extensive damage.
Everyone, including the skeletons and the townspeople, immediately began repairs. Since I didn’t have much to do, I stayed out of the way and watched from a distance as they worked on the stone walls.
Huh?
Something near the river was sparkling.
Is the light reflecting off the water?
For a moment, that’s what I thought, but something felt off.
Curious, I made my way over to the river.
“My lady?”
“I’m just going to the river.”
“The river?”
“Yeah. It looks like something is shining over there.”
“Shining?”
Marie followed me, looking puzzled. When we got close to the river, she frowned.
“What in the world…?”
“Yeah, what is it? It’s definitely shining, right?”
Not only in the water, but the riverbank was also sparkling. As I got closer, I saw small golden particles scattered all around.
“Hey, could this be gold dust?”
“Gold dust!?”
Marie hurriedly crouched down and picked up one of the sparkling grains from the riverbank.
“…It might be.”
“Let’s confirm it.”
“Confirm it?”
“Yeah. Remember when we were in Southbury, you brought me that book about ores?”
“Did I?”
“Yes, you did. In that book, it said there’s a stone called mica that looks similar to gold. Mica has no value, but because it’s light, it can easily be identified by submerging it in water.”
“I see.”
“Right, go get a tub.”
Clank, clank.
I ordered a nearby goblin skeleton to fetch a tub. I filled it with water from the river and added the golden grains I found.
The grains sank straight to the bottom.
“Yeah, I think this is gold dust. Mica would flutter slowly as it sank.”
“Wow! But where did this gold come from?”
“Maybe the storm yesterday caused a landslide upstream? There might be a gold vein up there, and the gold flowed down with the river.”
“A gold vein!?”
“Yeah. If we claim the mine, we could become really wealthy.”
“Yes! If we confirm there’s gold…”
Marie’s excitement was quickly replaced by a worried look.
“Huh? What’s wrong?”
“Well, I was just thinking about what the Marquis of Southbury might say…”
“Ah, yeah. That old man will definitely cause trouble.”
“Yes.”
“Well, we can deal with that later. For now, let’s focus on collecting the gold dust. I’ll get the skeletons to…”
Alongside the repairs to the stone walls, I’ve launched a manpower effort… wait, no, it’s a *bonepower* effort, right?
Whichever. Anyway, I’ve mobilized over a hundred skeletons to start collecting the gold dust from the river.
At the same time, we’ve begun constructing a dam to stop the river.
It’d be a waste to let all this gold dust flow downstream, right?
Plus, we’ve recently learned some dam construction techniques for reservoirs.
Oh, by “learned” I mean the goblin skeletons’ work capabilities, of course. No actual engineers have moved here.
I’ve also figured out how the skeletons share skills with one another. When one skeleton learns something new, it automatically transfers that knowledge to nearby skeletons. Eventually, other skeletons pick up the same skill and pass it on to even more skeletons.
The reason for this? Well, my skeletons helped with the construction of a dam for agricultural use in Bitterley not long ago.
During that time, they learned how to build dams and how to perform bank protection work.
Remember when we cleared out all the monsters? It seems that, as a result, there are hardly any monsters left near Bitterley.
So they decided to expand their agriculture by building a dam.
The techniques learned there gradually spread to my skeletons here.
This seemed like a great opportunity to test those skills.
Plus, I was already thinking that the current river and well water might not be enough to expand our fields.
