Chapter 66: The Exiled Girl Completes a Dam
I’m not sure if this is considered fast or not, but the dam was completed in about a month since we started construction. This dam wasn’t built on the stream we usually use as a water source, but on a relatively wide river located beyond a hill.
This is part of the major renovations, and this dam will serve as the new water reservoir for Scarletford. The water stored here will be transported to Scarletford via canals, providing both drinking water and irrigation water.
In addition, the stream we’ve been using as a water source until now will be reserved for industrial use, like for the blacksmiths.
There’s a mine upstream, after all. I wouldn’t want a poisoning incident to occur.
Oh, and by the way, we’re also planning to redirect the sewage there.
You might think dumping sewage like that is irresponsible, but when I asked Walter, he said the blacksmiths in Clarinton discharge their wastewater in the same way. Marie also mentioned that it’s normal to dump sewage in this world, so I guess that’s just how it is here.
Of course, the polluted water will flow downstream, but there’s nothing we can do about that. I mean, I don’t know how to prevent pollution from happening in the first place.
I’ll try to recover as much lead as possible, but with my knowledge, recovering all of it is impossible.
Anyway, I rode my Forest Deer Skeleton to the dam. Today, surprisingly, Marie came with me.
I’ve been making her do paperwork at home all the time, so I invited her to come along for a change of pace.
Now, regarding the dam, there was a slanted stone embankment about 10 meters tall and 50 meters wide.
Yes, that’s the dam’s embankment.
“Marie, isn’t this amazing? To have this much done in just a month…”
“Yes, to have something of this scale in the forest…”
Good. It seems like she’s enjoying the break.
“Baroness~!”
While we were talking, Patrick called out to us from atop the embankment.
I waved back energetically, and Patrick responded with a deep bow.
I thought that was a bit over-the-top, but for some reason, Patrick suddenly started sprinting off somewhere.
“…What? What’s that about?”
“Perhaps he’s coming to greet you, my lady?”
“Huh? Oh, I see.”
After waiting a bit, Patrick came back down from the embankment, running at full speed.
“Huff, huff, huff. I apologize for the wait.”
“Huh? Oh, no, we came to you.”
“But, Your Highness, you don’t have any guards with you. Where’s Will?”
“Huh? It’s fine~. There are Goblin Skeletons scattered around, and I even have two Crescent Bear Skeletons with me, you know?”
“Well, that’s true, but…”
“More importantly, are you okay? You’re out of breath. Come on, take a deep breath.”
“Y-Yes…”
Patrick took several deep breaths and calmed his breathing.
“Feeling better?”
“Yes.”
“Okay, let’s go up. Lead the way?”
“Yes!”
Patrick started walking slowly. He led us up the slope attached to the embankment, and we reached the top of the embankment.
The other side of the embankment had been dug quite deep, clearly showing the effort to maximize the reservoir’s capacity.
“What about the drainage system?”
“Yes! It’s done!”
“Alright, let’s go check it out.”
“Yes!”
Patrick guided us again, this time to the right side of the hill adjacent to the embankment. There, we found a canal carved into the hill, with solid bank protection work done.
This canal would allow the stored water to flow downstream—though it’s just beyond the hill—for use. The intake for Scarlettford’s drinking water is on the other side.
“Huh? Why’s the area around this drainage canal dug out so much?”
“Oh, well, the Goblin Skeletons just started digging on their own. I don’t really know why, but that’s how it ended up.”
“Huh? Why would they do that? Marie, do you know?”
“No, I’m afraid I don’t.”
“Let’s take a closer look.”
“Yes.”
We descended into the dug-out area.
The width was about 15 meters, I think?
The center part was dug even deeper, and there were grooves on both sides for fitting water level control boards.
I looked around.
…Wait? Could it be?
“Crouch down, I want to get a closer look.”
Clatter, clatter.
The Forest Deer Skeleton crouched down, allowing me to dismount and crouch near the embankment.
“My lady? What are you doing?”
“Ah! I knew it!”
“What do you mean?”
“Marie, crouch down and take a look.”
“Yes.”
Marie, looking confused, crouched down next to me to observe the embankment.
“See? This spot is lower than the embankment, right?”
“Yes, you’re right… Oh! I see now!”
“Exactly. This must be designed to prevent water from overflowing the embankment, like last time when there was heavy rain. This is definitely flood control!”
“Yes, I believe so. To think the Skeletons could do something like this…”
“Right?! It’s amazing!”
I bet they did something similar in Bitterley as well. Since I gave them the same instructions, they must’ve implemented similar flood control measures.
Scarletford isn’t directly downstream, so it might not be necessary, but…
As we marveled at the construction, Patrick spoke up beside us.
“Uh… this is amazing?”
Yeah, he totally doesn’t get it.
“Anyway, it’s finished now. Patrick, great job!”
“Thank you!”
When I praised him, Patrick beamed with joy.
Meanwhile, the streets of the royal capital, lined with stalls, were bustling with people. The stalls sold everything from food to antiques.
In one corner, a man selling dishes was chatting with the vendor next to him, who was selling hot dogs. In his hand was a hot dog he had just bought.
“So, got any interesting money-making tips?”
“Huh? If I had a way to make easy money, I’d be doing it myself.”
The dish seller asked, but the hot dog vendor responded with a grin.
“Well, I do have a tip on how not to lose money.”
“Oh? What’s that?”
“The Southbury Marquisate. You’d better stay away from there.”
“Huh? The Southbury Marquisate is one of the richest lands in the country. The taxes are low, and the port is top-notch. Why should I stay away?”
“Well, you see, the Marquis of Southbury…”
The man then explained that the Marquis of Southbury, who had become possessed by a demon, had murdered his young daughter and discarded her body in the cursed forest, with priests predicting divine retribution.
“Hmm… demon possession, huh?”
“You don’t believe me? It’s a well-known story in this town.”
“Isn’t it just a rumor?”
“Nope. Just recently, the Marquis of Southbury raised an army.”
“Raised an army?”
“Yeah. He sent thousands of soldiers to Clarinton, the town near the cursed forest.”
“What for? I thought his young daughter was already murdered? Why now?”
“Well… it’s because of ‘that.’”
“‘That’?”
“You know, because he’s possessed by a demon. Maybe he needs her corpse. Or maybe she’s wandering around as a zombie.”
“Ugh, seriously…?”
“Yep. Anyway, it’s a total mess over there. So, especially around the northwestern part of the Marquisate near the cursed forest, you’d better stay away.”
“I see. Well, thanks for the warning. Not that it matters to me since I was planning to head east anyway.”
“No problem.”
The man then took a bite of his hot dog.
“Oh? This is pretty good.”
“Told ya! Eat it while it’s hot.”
“Yeah.”
