They're done exploring Magnolia right before dark. It's a big town, so they can't see every place in just a day. That's why Cana only shows general locations and the important places.
Alex returns to the Guild with Cana on his back. She is too tired after walking around the town for hours, so he gives her a piggy back ride, and everyone who sees it gives them a warm smile.
"Am I not heavy?"
"This is nothing. I usually carry heavier things than you while walking for days on difficult tracks. And I'm used to carrying someone your size before."
"Someone my size?"
"Yeah, she's like my little sister. Before I left to be independent, she would always act spoiled and asked for a piggy back ride every day."
"She must feel very lonely after you leave."
"Yeah. She even cried once, thinking that the reason I left her and went alone was because she is too weak to stay with me. Though there's no way I can bring her since she's still too young to leave her mom."
"Oh, she still lives with your mom."
"No, she's not my mom, she's her mom, I'm an orphan, but they are my family. Anyway, her still being weak is never the reason for me to leave her, okay? For me, it doesn't matter whether my family is weak or strong. What matters is that I love them and can spend time with them."
"But is it really okay for someone so weak to be the family of someone so strong?"
Cana looks down sadly. Alex now can confirm that she has started being discouraged to tell Gildarts her true identity as his daughter.
"Why is it a bad thing? Everyone is different, even if they are parent and child or siblings. Even twins can be different like having different talents, you know. Instead, I think it will be wonderful if they are different."
"How so?" Cana can't understand why Alex says it's a wonderful thing.
"I mean, just imagine it. When your parents or maybe older siblings are very strong but you feel that you are very weak. A family is made of people who love each other, right? Then surely those strong parents or older siblings will be more than happy to teach you until you become as strong as them. I bet they will be even happier if you can surpass them in the future. But the most important thing for me isn't the result. It's the time we spend together."
"Eh? Time?"
"Yeah. Training together, studying magic together, walking around the town like we did earlier, going on a trip, and many other things. Don't you think that being together like that is more important than being incredibly powerful?" Alex is trying to encourage Cana with this roundabout advice.
"..... Then, why did you leave your family?" Cana doesn't understand why Alex leave if he thinks that being together is more important than anything else.
"Haha, I guess I was stupid, after all. I only realized this after leaving them. During my trip here, I finally realized how lonely it is to be all alone in this world. But knowing that there are people who also miss me always gives me more strength, you know. Even if we are not in the same place, just knowing that there are people worrying about me is enough to ease my worries. Besides, I can always exchange letters with them, and I can meet them when I have time in the future. Ah! Sorry, I just keep rambling about this thing. Y-you know, t-the Guild is also your family, I will be your big brother if you want."
Alex acts as if he is panicking after making a big mistake. It makes Cana think that he misunderstood her as being lonely for not having a family.
"Hehe, it's okay. You're right. Fairy Tail is my family. But you know, I actually still have my own family, so you don't need to worry."
"I-is that so? I'm glad then."
Alex shows a fake relief, making Cana smile. But he's actually worried inside because he doesn't know if he succeeds in encouraging Cana or not. She doesn't say anything more, after all.
'Sigh, maybe I'm too hasty. This is still just our first day knowing each other and someone can't change overnight just because of advice. Seems like I can only keep giving her advice until she opens up to me more so I can help her directly.'
While being worried over this matter, Alex and Cana finally arrive at the Guild. He thought Cana would want to get down before entering the Guild, but she actually fell asleep after their talk, so he kept carrying her.
The rowdy members want to say something with their loud voices, but Alex tells them to stay quiet by putting his finger on his lips. They now see that Cana is asleep, so all of them stop talking too loudly.
Makarov tells Alex to put Cana in their infirmary bed so she can sleep comfortably. After he does that, Alex returns to the hall and enjoys drinks with everyone.
For the next few days, Alex stays in Magnolia to familiarize himself with the town and to know more about his Guild. He gets along well with his Guild Mates, especially Laxus and Cana who are the closest to his age.
Alex also buys a lot of books to study different things that seem useful for his job as a Mage. He wants to study more about magic too, but Magic Books are hard to find.
When he asks Makarov about it, the old man says that they have a library containing many knowledge about magic. But to access the library, he needs to accumulate Guild Points by taking jobs.
"You can't take the original books out of the library, but we can give you the copies if you pay with points. Points are very important to use the library, so you need to clear a lot of jobs to read a lot of books in our library."
"So Guild Points are very important, right? Are they used for other things as well?"
"They are also used to check your performances, so we can recommend the correct jobs to you. And every year, we are holding an S-Class promotional exam. The points you collected are important to help you get chosen for the exam."
"S-Class?" Alex asks as if he doesn't know what it means because he is a newbie.
"You know that jobs have ranks, right? We don't specify who can take A-Class jobs and below that are now categorized as Normal Class because we use our own judgment to see if the Mages can clear the jobs or not before approving. But for S-Class jobs and above, we can't just give them to anybody."
Makarov explains that to take S-Class jobs, not only do the Mages need to have sufficient powers, they also need to have good knowledge, judgment, etc. That's why they need to do an exam to see these qualities in the S-Class candidates.
"I see. So newcomers can't be chosen for S-Class exams, right?"
"Basically yes. After all, we can't see how good you are in the first year. Even if you somehow show great achievements in the first year, S-Class promotion will still be difficult."
"Because of trust, right?"
Makarov nods. "S-Class jobs and above are very important. That's why just being strong isn't enough to be an S-Class."
"I understand, that's an obvious thing and I agree with it. But what are the classes above S-Class?"
"There are S-Class, SS-Class, 10-Year, and 100-Year Jobs. 10-Year Jobs mean those jobs haven't been cleared for more than 10 Years while 100-Year Jobs mean they haven't been cleared for more than 100 years."
"Damn! They must be very difficult if no one can clear them even after decades and centuries."
"You're right. The survival rate of 100-Years jobs are almost 0, that's why even the strongest Mages are hesitant to take them."
"I see. Well, it's not my concern now, so I won't crack my brain over this matter."
Alex and Makarov talk more about Guilds and jobs. Makarov happily explains things Alex needs to be mindful of when taking different types of jobs. The old man is happy to have a new member who will take his jobs seriously.
