Chapter 2: KICKED OUT OF HEAVEN; THANKS MOM (2)
With delicate fingers, she opened the letter, peeking ever so slightly at the contents. Her jaw tightened with each mocking word.
'My beautiful Arella.
How time has passed. You have grown so old and so beautiful. You take after me in your beauty. How many years has it been since you last caused a ruckus? Or has it been just a month? Was it not just last week that your poor father was informed of you breaking very expensive machinery that had been purchased from the other department of noble angels? Or was it just yesterday that I was called in to your office only to be informed that you had set an angel's head on fire because he had not done his job correctly?
Oh, how I miss the time you were a wee little babe.
I will be awaiting your arrival in the manor.
Yours,
Lailah.'
Upon finishing the letter, Arella's fist clenched, and a bush behind them was set on fire.
Castiel snapped his finger, and the fire was immediately put out. "No burning things." He chided.
"We all know she does not miss me being a wee babe." She ran a hand through her blonde locks. "She never forgets to mention how it was difficult to get me to settle down. Not to mention how I apparently kept drowning all the pets she got me."
"I think it is called sarcasm. Mother learned it in the human realm."
"What is the use of sarcasm? She is simply insufferable." She threw her arms up, frustrated. Another bush, next to them this time, was set on fire: "She is going to get mad at me anyway and dole out some punishment that she deems fit. I am sure she already has a punishment planned."
Castiel snapped his finger once more, putting out the fire. "I wonder where you get this temper from."
His question was answered once they got home, and their mother stomped down the stairs and shook Arella by her shoulders. Since she was much shorter than her daughter, she was not able to grab the top of her shoulders, but it was effective nonetheless. "What were you thinking going to that place?" You already know the rumors that are going around Arella, yet you march into that wedding and—holy fire? Have you lost your mind?"
Arella would have rolled her eyes had she not known the consequences it would bring. Her mother was one who knew how to hold a grudge and dole out punishments. There was a time Arella was punished to work on their garden all alone until it met the requirements that her mother had set out.
This had taken her close to three years.
Never had she rolled her eyes at her mother again.
"Give her some slack, Lailah." Camael said as he floated down the steps with his wings flapping gently behind him.
Arella secretly wished their house was smaller and that he smacked a wing on a wall and fell. That would be a very funny thing to witness. However, the house was huge, and there was more than enough space for his wings.
Camael and Lailah were very beautiful. Even to the standards of angels.
Lailah was short for an angel, with beautiful auburn hair that fell to her midback. Her eyes were a striking shade of green, and her skin was a very pale shade of white that always seemed to glimmer whenever she was in the sun. Her skin always seemed to glow in any lighting, and the halo that hovered above her auburn locks added to her aesthetic. Even though her features did not match an angel perfectly, her character was completely that one of an angel.
On the other hand, her father was a tower of an angel. His skin was tanned from all the time he spent outside. His hair was blonde, and he had heterochromia, with one eye being blue and the other a very light shade of gray. Just like his body, his wings were massive and were almost double his height in wing span. Of all the angels in the council, it was their father who had the largest wings, which made him the scariest out of all the angels.
"Father."
"Arella." Their father's voice had always been deep.
It boomed when he was talking to people outside of the family or when he was addressing a large crowd. However, it was much softer when he spoke to his family, and the softest when he addressed his wife. A relationship like the one her mother and father had was the one thing that Arella had always dreamed of.
She watched as her father landed on the marble floor and walked to his wife. Standing next to Camael, Lailah's shortness became even more noticeable. She never wore heels either, which made the contrast even larger.
"I thought we had agreed that you were not to go to the wedding ceremony. I learned of it even before you did anything. And by the time I learned of your attendance at the wedding, you had already set another angel's wings on fire!" Her mother was clearly not done.
'Mother's height was not proportionate to her explosive anger." Arella threw a pointed look at her brother, who returned it with a look that said,
'You'll get in trouble if you don't look at her when she is scolding you.'
"Are you even listening to me, young lady?" Lailah was all but screaming at this point.
If anyone not of the family saw her like this, they would be so surprised that Lailah was not the picture-perfect angel that she made herself out to be.
"Since you do not think it wise to listen to me, then I guess I shall come to a decision on my own."
"I am listening, mother…" Arella was all but ready to complain to her mother.
"I don't want to hear it. There will be a discussion with your superiors at work; you will be laid off until I deem it fit for you to get your job back. Do you understand?"
Upon hearing this, even Camael gasped.
Being laid off was the equivalent of being a fallen angel.
Although Lailah was technically Arella's senior at work, there was no way she had the authority to lay Arella off without consulting Arella's manager.
Right?
"Mother! You must not!"
"You, young angel, do not tell me what I can and cannot do."
"My dear, do you not think that you might be overreacting just a..."
Lailah's eye twitched ever so slightly. "Who is overreacting?"
"Definitely not you, my love." Camael shot his daughter a resigned look. Not even his words could save her from her mother's anger.
Castiel opened his mouth, ready to defend his sister. Lailah shot him a glare before he even got a word out. He shut his mouth, swallowed the words that were at the tip of his tongue before turning to his sister. "Now that it has come to this, it can be a good chance for you to learn new skills and aim for the rank of a mid-tier one angel, Ella."
Arella's hands clenched into fists in an attempt to prevent herself from flinging herself at her brother and punching that smile he had off of his face. It would be a pity for him to spot a black eye for a couple of days, but it would do well to appease her anger.
To keep the peace, Arella forced out the words, "I understand, mother."
A smile graced Lailah's lips upon hearing her daughter agree with her, "I am glad we see eye to eye. Think of this like a break." She rubbed her daughter's robed forearms up and down. "You will get to learn more about yourself, and you can even rank up just like Castiel says. The human realm will be good for you."
"Wait, the human realm?! Mother, that is not fair! You did nothing of the sort that one time Castiel got so angry that he burned down the entire head office." Lailah stopped rubbing her arms.
"Did you just raise your voice at me?" Lailah's fingers were sparking at this point. Holy fire was most effective when dealing with demons and curses; that is what they were made for after all. However, they still worked like a normal fire would and burned anything it got its flames on.
Camael and Castiel, upon seeing the sparking fingers, each took a huge step back, holding onto each other. It was quite comical to look at because of the huge wings that got in the way of their arms.
Arella turned to her father and brother, seeking help, but they had already found shelter.
The traitors.
Seeing as she had no other option, she immediately knelt down, prostrating herself in front of her mother, "I am sorry, mother, I was wrong."
"I think she looks repentant enough," Camael squeaked from some corner.
Arella did not have to be looking up to know that he had been given 'the look' in order to shut up.
"You will go upstairs, you will pack your bags, and you will leave immediately. Understood?"
"Yes mother."
"Good." Lailah helped her daughter up and smiled widely up at her, "See? We're on the same page here. This will be good for you."
"Yes mother."
Arella stormed off to pack immediately, and her brother sidled up beside her, passing her her robes. "At least you didn't set her on fire."
"Continue talking, and I'll set you on fire."
