Fallout: (Nuclear)Winter Is Coming

Chapter 9: Ch.9: Who was it?

Even inside the vault I could feel the rumbling through the ground from the blasts.

Silence enveloped us for a few minutes as the vibration finally calmed down.

"So, uh... What's your name?" I asked the girl I saved with my split second decision.

The girl seemed to be in a trance, her mind still reeling from the recent event. For her, everything must be happening too quickly for her to process.

She turned toward me, clearly still distracted.

"I'm... Savannah. Savannah Donohue." She answered, but seemed to come to her senses and followed up with a question.

"Is this... real? Did they really..?"

"Drop the bombs? Yes. The world as we know it is gone." I answered straightforwardly.

The girl, Savanna started looking around at her surroundings. "Is this a Vault-tec vault?" Her eyes wandering in curiosity. A distraction from the morbid topic of the end of the world.

"No. This Vault isnt related to Vault-Tec. This is a vault my family had built using the Vault-Tec designs. Unfortunately, they were away on business, so it is just the two of us here and there are no other residents..." I paused and looked at her while thinking. "Come with me and I'll lead you to your room. You can take a bath and relax. I'll bring you some clothes to change into."

She didnt say anything and just nodded and followed me further into the vault.

I led her into one of the empty suites and then went to the storage area for clothes for her.

When I came back, she was still in the bathroom so I knocked and left the clothes inside the door.

"The clothes are here. When you're done, you can join me for a meal and I'll answer any questions you have."

"..thanks." I heard her say from inside. It seems she is still a bit out of it. I dont blame her. It's alot that happening and with no warning.

I went out of her suite and over to my own. I sat down on my couch and opened my menu.

I had received the rewards for the main quest Death From Above and got 2000xp and caps as well as the recipe I was excited for.

[You have leveled up!]

[You have leveled up!]

I had leveled up twice and reached level 8. I put the special points into Intelligence again bringing my INT up to 7.

As for my Perk Points, I had one left over point before and got 3 more.

I was still deciding which perks to take. At level 8, there were several options, but I was also limited to mostly INT related perks due to how I have been investing my special points.

Having 7 INT was enough for now so I planned to spread my points out a bit going forward.

I narrowed my choices down to a few good helpful ones. [Science], which is the novice level of the perk. Down the tree there was also Advanced Science, Expert Science, and Master Science. But those required higher levels and stats.

[Science - Novice level related knowledge and ability to craft level 1 plans.]

The next was [Robotics] which was similarly the novice version with Advanced, Expert and Master Robotics down the perk tree.

[Robotics - Novice level related knowledge and ability to craft level 1 plans.]

Both were must haves that will aid me greatly in the future.

I also decided to take the first rank of the [Chemist] perk as well so now I had one more point to spend.

'Should I hold onto it for now?' I thought. 'It might be wise to save it for when I need it...'

I thought might be a wise decision to hold on to that point for now until more perks open up.

Looking at the list of perks, I saw one under Endurance that might be a very powerful perk.

In the game, I actually avoided it in favor of others because I could fix myself up by spamming stimpaks.

But this is the real world and having an [Adamantium Skeleton] would be extremely helpful.

All I need is a healing factor and I could be a discount Wolverine.

In order to get that perk, I would need 3 END, so at the minimum would be two more levels before I could get it.

That perk also costed three perk points, instead of just one so I have high hopes for the quality of it.

I noticed that after that main quest to survive the bombs had completed, there was no other main quest that popped up.

Instead new Daily Quests appeared. There were three dailies and one weekly in the list.

The dailies were as follows-

[Daily: Run 10km. Reward: 100xp, 100caps.]

[Daily: Perform 100 Push-Ups and Sit-Ups. Reward: 100xp, 100caps.]

[Daily: Hit the speed bag for 10 minutes. Reward: 100xp, 100caps.]

The three dailies were straightforward and easy. But the weekly was what I believed would help me the most while living in the vault.

[Weekly: Complete All Dailies Everyday (0/7). Reward: 7000xp, 7000caps, 1 Free Special Point.]

So as long as I complete all the dailies for a week, I could get not just the generous XP and cap reward but also a free point to place in my S.P.E.C.I.A.L.

I closed my menu and headed over the cafeteria. I began preparing a meal for two.

I cooked up some spaghetti and made some quick garlic bread.

I wasn't a great cook but I could manage spaghetti.

As I finished plating the food, I set the plates at a table with silverware right as my guest walked in.

There was still a bit of tension and unanswered questions between us but I tried my best to make her comfortable.

"Thanks for the food. Um..." she had a bashful expression and seemed like she didnt know how to address me.

"Oh! My bad! I didn't introduce myself even though I asked your name earlier. My name is Frankie. Frankie Winter. It nice to meet you Savannah." I reached my out to shake hands and she hesitantly reciprocated.

"So..." I started trying to help break the ice. "I'm sure it's alot to take in but if you have any questions about what is going on. I'll tell you what I know."

"Is everything really gone? Everyone? My parents..." she asked, her green eyes were red around the edges and it seemed she had been crying before joining me.

"I'm sorry but yes. Before seeing you at the ranger cabin, I had been listening to the radio. All the major cities were attacked and the central U.S. was hit the worst. Whoever dropped the bombs didn't want us to recover easily."

"'Whoever dropped the bombs'? Wasn't it the Reds?" She asked confused by my words.

I scratched the back of my head before answering. 'It might have been China or Russia but it could have also been Vault-Tec but not many other than me knows that...'

There has never been a definitive answer to who dropped the bombs. We have evidence that Vault-Tec, from the live action series, was willing to drop them. And we also have an unexploded bomb in Megaton in the DC wasteland that appeared to have a Vault-Tec logo on it.

But so far no proof that leads to 100% certainty of the culprit/s.

I couldn't say all that so I glossed over it.

"What I meant was it could have been Russia or China but we might never know for sure. But I can assure you, the U.S. responded with bombs of our own and the entire world is suffering now. No one is the winner..."

The atmosphere settled into an awkward silence which I was determined to prevent.

"Enough about such topics. You and I are in this together now, so tell me about yourself. Are you from around here? And what were you doing in that dingy cabin?"
