Chapter 9: Chapter 8: Rescue
```
What should I do!?
As soon as Lu Yuanming saw the two adults and four children burst into the building, two thoughts immediately came to his mind.
The first thought was to quickly run towards the upper floors of the building, but this instinctive idea was dismissed by him the moment it emerged.
With over thirty hours remaining before his return, he could no longer survive by sneaking around; these monsters were much faster than he could run, and both their vision and sense of smell were so keen that he couldn't hide from them!
The second thought was to aim at the monsters and pull the trigger from afar, to test whether the bullets made of Colorless Light Particles would work, but this idea was also rejected by Lu Yuanming. First, because he had only made one bullet, and aside from shooting once during military training at university, he had never handled any firearms. He didn't trust his own accuracy.
Lu Yuanming immediately pinched two Colorless Light Particles with each hand, and formed four semi-transparent bullets all at once. Now, only four Colorless Light Particles remained floating around him, which pained his heart to see. However, he had no time to worry about this as he ran towards the ground floor, loading the semi-transparent bullets into the pistol. As the magazine snapped back into place, he had arrived at the ground floor, just in time to see the two adults and the four children panicking and running into various rooms.
At this moment, the two man-faced dogs that had barged in had each pinned down a child. After all, the children couldn't outrun the adults, and with a vicious tear of their monstrous jaw parts, the two children were killed amidst horrific screams—one had its neck snapped, while the other's belly was torn open, its liver, kidneys, and intestines half devoured.
Lu Yuanming's pupils jittered as he witnessed the scene. Summing up his courage, he yelled, "Run this way to the corridor, hurry, to the corridor!!"
Both adults were white men, wearing light blue clothes that looked like uniforms, likely maintenance staff from a school, considering the badges on their chests. The remaining two children wore school uniforms; the older was a girl, seemingly around ten years old, and the younger a boy, who looked to be six or seven.
As Lu Yuanming stood shouting at the stairwell entrance, the two white men immediately turned and ran towards his position. The one leading was a tall, skinny man who ran forward heedlessly, while the slightly overweight man behind him hesitated, then astonishingly turned and tucked both the little boy and girl under his arms.
With food at hand, the two monsters didn't pursue further, allowing the lead man to reach the stairwell entrance. The tall, skinny man, upon seeing the gun in Lu Yuanming's hand, immediately shouted, "Buddy, run! All the firearms don't work anymore!!"
During that time, the tall, skinny man had already run past Lu Yuanming and up the stairs.
Meanwhile, the portly man, still carrying the two children and gasping for breath, approached the stairwell entrance. Then, one of the two monsters that had entered the building abandoned the torn flesh it was devouring and charged towards the overweight man. Hearing the monster's pursuit, he began to cry out, tears and snot streaming down, yet, even at this moment, he did not let go of the children.
Lu Yuanming was also extremely tense. He aimed the pistol at the approaching man-faced dog. When the monster was less than ten meters from him and the fat man roughly seven or eight meters away, with the monster nearly upon the fat man, Lu Yuanming pulled the trigger.
In his heart, he was actually prepared for the bullet to be ineffective, but the moment he fired, he saw not sparks or Mars, but a burst of white light emerge from the muzzle of the pistol. It was not like a laser beam, for its speed was not that fast. It resembled more of a ball of light, moving incredibly swiftly, but its faint trajectory could be seen with the naked eye.
This ball of light shot straight out from the gun barrel and struck the chest of the man-faced dog with the speed of lightning, exploding with a crack that echoed like thunder. On inspection, the chest of the man-faced dog was blown open, leaving a basketball-sized hole, through which even its back could be seen.
The overweight man was completely stunned. He dumbly looked at Lu Yuanming and then back at the downed man-faced dog monster.
Not just the overweight man, but even the skinny tall man who had been running upstairs was shocked still, and even Lu Yuanming himself was astounded. The pistol's power was so exaggerated, it was as if he were wielding a hand-held cannon. This was no longer a mere bullet; people would believe it if he said it was a spherical lightning.
However, Lu Yuanming quickly composed himself and yelled to the overweight man, "Get over here quick!"
The overweight man then snapped out of it, staggering behind Lu Yuanming and dropping the two children to catch his breath. At this time, the tall, skinny man also stopped his upward sprint but didn't come back down; instead, he shouted from the middle of the stairwell, "Is that a pistol? Is that a pistol? Do you have more bullets? Buddy, do you have more bullets?"
Lu Yuanming did not respond but kept his gaze fixed on the other monster in the distance. At the same time, he saw the monster he had killed begin to emit White Light Particles. The vast majority, at least nine-tenths, dissipated into the air, and about one-tenth of the particles floated towards Lu Yuanming and fell onto his skin, seemingly merging into his body.
This time, Lu Yuanming clearly saw the process of these White Light Particles merging into his body and became even more convinced that his Soul Body had become stronger due to these particles.
But he wondered why only one-tenth was absorbed by him. Was it because of the distance, failing to capture them, or was there some peculiar rule that allowed him to absorb only one-tenth?
And furthermore...
```
Lu Yuanming looked at the chubby man behind him, the two children with expressions of terror, and the skinny tall guy peering down the hallway. They all seemed oblivious to the White Light Particles, as if he was the only one who could see and absorb them.
Lu Yuanming had many questions, but it clearly wasn't the time to delve into them. He had just shot and killed one monster, which immediately enraged another. The creature abandoned its feast of flesh and blood and started charging towards Lu Yuanming frantically.
Lu Yuanming aimed his pistol's sight. Coming from a peaceful world, he didn't hesitate to pull the trigger when the monster was still at least twenty meters away. A white light orb shot out but missed, striking the wall next to the monster instead and blasting a huge hole. The dust billowed, and from within it, the monster burst forth with great speed and strength. Amidst flying sand and stones, it closed in on Lu Yuanming, now only about ten meters away.
"Hit!"
With increasing desperation, Lu Yuanming pulled the trigger twice in quick succession. Two White Light Particles shot out, one hitting the monster's left arm and the other grazing the side of its head. Thankfully, he managed to land the hits. The shoulder shattered, and half of the monster's head was sheared off. It finally collapsed and slid several meters, coming to a stop near Lu Yuanming's feet.
Only then did Lu Yuanming feel his heart pounding violently. In his vision, large amounts of White Light Particles still rose from the monster's corpse, with only a tenth of them drifting towards him and then merging into his body. The remaining particles simply faded away.
(It seems distance doesn't matter. If possible, I should try to capture these White Light Particles with my hand... But I must build up my courage, and if possible, train with firearms. I used three bullets when one should have sufficed...)
Lu Yuanming's pistol had just one bullet left, made of Colorless Light Particles, and there was still another monster outside the building. He had to kill it with this last shot, or he would be the next one to die.
In the meantime, the skinny tall guy had run down from the stairs, exclaiming loudly, "Oh my God, dude, are you a secret government agent? From Area 51? Or maybe the Freemasons? Is that an Energy Weapon?"
Lu Yuanming didn't speak. While the skinny guy chattered on, the chubby man was comforting the two crying children. Suddenly, everyone heard a piercing roar from the monster outside the building that wasn't like the previous hunting cries. A bad feeling flashed through Lu Yuanming's mind, and he immediately ran towards the building's front door. However, upon reaching it, he didn't see the monster, just an unrecognizable pile of flesh and blood.
The skinny guy followed and looked outside. He then exclaimed with relief, "The monster was scared away, thank goodness, it ran away!"
"No..."
Lu Yuanming's face darkened at the thought of a possibility. At that moment, the chubby man jogged over and said, "No, the monster went to call its pack. I've been hunting with my father. When wolves scout, they do this. If there's a pack, they'll call for it!"
Lu Yuanming had the same thought. He remembered encountering over a dozen of those human-faced dogs previously, yet only three had appeared here. The roaring escape of the monster just now was very likely an attempt to summon its troop!
"Let's go, right now! Do you know of any place that might be easier to defend or more concealed, perhaps with an iron door or sturdy facilities?" Lu Yuanming urgently shouted to the skinny and chubby men.
They looked at each other, and the skinny guy immediately said, "Subway station!"
The chubby man countered, "A bank!"
The two fell silent, looking at each other in a silent impasse. Lu Yuanming picked up the little boy and said to the chubby man, "You carry one child, hey, Skinny, lead the way. Whether it's the subway station or the bank, run to whichever is closest. Hurry, hurry, hurry!"
Without hesitating, the two men obeyed Lu Yuanming. Having just witnessed him killing two monsters and wielding that unimaginable high-tech weapon, they instinctively followed his commands. The chubby man picked up the little girl, and the skinny guy led the way as they ran.
Lu Yuanming followed them out of the building.
No sooner had the group of five, three adults and two children, rushed out of the building than they heard a series of roars in the distance—one after another—clearly the cries of those human-faced dog monsters. The color drained from all three men's faces, and the children began to cry again.
A horde of monsters...
was converging upon them!
