From the survivor to the vanisher

Chapter 15: 15: Alchemy path

The days following the shadow beast's defeat were anything but restful for Aditya. Though the village returned to an uneasy calm, his mind remained a storm of questions and self-doubt. The encounter had revealed a painful truth: he was unprepared for the dangers that lurked in the shadows. If not for Dhruv's intervention, the beast would have taken his life.

Sitting in the dimly lit workshop, surrounded by shelves crammed with vials, scrolls, and alchemical instruments, Aditya watched Dhruv busy himself with a bubbling cauldron. The air was thick with the pungent aroma of herbs and minerals, their combined scent both soothing and unsettling.

"Master," Aditya began, his voice hesitant, "the shadow beast... I froze. I didn't know what to do. How can I ever hope to protect myself, let alone others, if I'm so... powerless?"

Dhruv glanced up from his work, his golden eyes glinting in the candlelight. "Power is not something given freely, Aditya. It must be earned. What you faced that night was a lesson, and lessons are seldom gentle. But despair won't serve you. If you wish to stand against the darkness, you must learn to wield the tools that shape our world."

Aditya straightened, determination flickering in his eyes. "Teach me, then. Teach me everything."

A rare smile touched Dhruv's lips. "Very well. But be warned—alchemy is not merely the art of transmutation. It is the study of balance, of forces both seen and unseen. It demands discipline, intellect, and willpower. Are you prepared for the weight of such knowledge?"

"I am," Aditya said without hesitation.

The next morning, Dhruv presented Aditya with an object that would become central to his training: a small sphere made of interlocking brass rings, each inscribed with intricate runes. It glimmered faintly, as if alive with latent energy.

"This is an alchemical focus," Dhruv explained, holding the device between his fingers. "It is both a tool and a teacher. Through it, you will learn to direct your intent, to shape energy with precision and purpose. But understand this—it is not the focus that wields power. That power lies within you. The focus merely amplifies it."

Aditya held the device gingerly, feeling its weight in his palm. It was lighter than he'd expected, its surface warm to the touch.

"How do I use it?"

"Patience," Dhruv said, his tone sharp. "Before you wield the focus, you must understand the principles it embodies. Begin by studying these."

He gestured to a stack of leather-bound tomes on the table. Their titles were written in languages Aditya didn't recognize, their covers adorned with sigils and diagrams that seemed to shift under the light.

Aditya's days soon fell into a demanding routine. Mornings were spent in the workshop, learning the fundamentals of alchemy—how to combine elements to create potions, how to inscribe runes that carried specific intents, and how to use talismans for defense and healing. Afternoons were devoted to studying Dhruv's vast library, deciphering texts that ranged from the mundane to the arcane.

The work was grueling, but Aditya found himself thriving under the pressure. Each success, no matter how small, fueled his determination. He learned to craft potions that could heal wounds, enhance strength, or dispel minor curses. He practiced inscribing runes on parchment until his hands ached, learning how each stroke of the pen carried meaning and power.

But it wasn't without frustration. One evening, after yet another failed attempt to activate a shielding rune, Aditya slammed his fist on the table, scattering his tools.

"This is impossible!" he exclaimed, his voice echoing in the empty workshop. "Why can't I get it right?"

Dhruv, who had been watching silently from the doorway, stepped forward. "Alchemy is not about perfection, Aditya. It is about perseverance. Every failure is a step toward understanding. Learn from it, and you will grow."

Aditya took a deep breath, nodding. "I'll try again."

"That's all I ask," Dhruv said, his tone softer.

One night, while poring over a particularly dense tome on energy transference, Aditya's fingers brushed against something unusual. A faint click echoed as he pressed on a corner of the book, revealing a hidden compartment. Inside was a folded parchment, its edges frayed with age.

"What's this?" Aditya murmured, unfolding the parchment to reveal a series of strange symbols arranged in a circular pattern.

Intrigued, he brought the parchment to Dhruv, who was grinding herbs at his workbench.

Dhruv's expression darkened as he examined the symbols. "A map," he said after a long pause.

"A map to what?"

"To knowledge," Dhruv said, his voice heavy. "And to danger. This map leads to a place where alchemists once sought to transcend their limits. But their ambition cost them dearly."

Aditya's curiosity burned brighter. "Shouldn't we explore it? If it holds knowledge, isn't it worth the risk?"

Dhruv shook his head. "Some knowledge is a burden, not a gift. You are not ready for what lies at the end of this path. Focus on mastering the basics before seeking the extraordinary."

Frustrated but unwilling to argue, Aditya tucked the map away. He would respect Dhruv's wishes—for now.

As weeks turned into months, Aditya's progress became undeniable. He could now wield the alchemical focus with precision, using it to channel energy into potions and runes with remarkable accuracy. His confidence grew, but so did his awareness of how much he still had to learn.

One day, while meditating in the forest—a practice Dhruv insisted was essential for mental clarity—Aditya had a moment of revelation. Watching the sunlight filter through the trees, he realized that alchemy was not about dominating nature but working in harmony with it. Every element, every force, had its place in the grand design.

Returning to the workshop, he shared his insight with Dhruv, who nodded approvingly. "Now you're beginning to understand. Alchemy is not about power—it is about balance. Remember that, and you will go far."

By the end of his training period, Aditya had transformed. He was no longer the frightened, uncertain boy who had faced the shadow beast. He was a budding alchemist, armed with knowledge and a growing sense of purpose.

But as he stood in the workshop one evening, staring at the map hidden in his pocket, he couldn't help but wonder: Was he truly ready to face the challenges ahead?

The answer, he knew, would come with time. For now, he would continue walking the alchemical path, knowing that each step brought him closer to the truth—and to the destiny that awaited him in the shadows.
