Chapter 19: 19.The Betrayer’s Mask
The revelation hit like a sledgehammer. One name, one face, and everything I thought I knew about loyalty, trust, and the Vasquez legacy shattered in an instant.
El Rey wasn't some outsider, some rival trying to claim my empire. He was one of us, a wolf in sheep's clothing. And the person responsible for bringing him into our ranks—the one who had secretly nurtured his rise from the shadows—was someone I had once trusted with my life.
The betrayal was closer than I could have ever imagined.
The Face Behind the Mask
Rico and Lucia were the first to hear it from me. I didn't waste time with pleasantries. I slammed the evidence down in front of them, the name glaring back at us like a scar on the page.
"Raul," I said, my voice trembling with rage. "Raul is the one who brought him in."
A stunned silence fell over the room, the air thick with disbelief before Lucia spoke, her voice strained. "Raul? That's impossible."
"I wish it were," I said, my tone biting. "But everything points to him. The secret meetings, the quiet manipulations. He's been feeding El Rey information for months, maybe longer."
Rico shook his head, unable to grasp the enormity of what I was saying. "But he's been with us for years. He's practically family."
"That's exactly what makes it dangerous," I hissed. "Raul was too close. He knew how to infiltrate us from the inside. And now, he's leading El Rey's charge."
I could see the doubt in their eyes, the reluctance to accept the truth. But the evidence was irrefutable. Raul had been the one orchestrating the downfall from within. And now that the truth was out, it felt like the walls around me were closing in.
A Meeting with Raul
Raul didn't know I knew. Not yet, anyway. But I wasn't about to let him make the first move. If I'd learned anything in recent months, it was that power was never handed over; it was seized. And I wasn't about to let Raul take what was mine.
I called him into my office. His face, always calm and composed, gave nothing away as he stepped inside.
"You wanted to see me?" he asked, his voice as smooth and composed as ever, betraying no hint of guilt.
I didn't waste a moment. "I know everything, Raul. I know about El Rey. I know about you."
For a brief moment, his eyes betrayed a flicker of surprise, but it was gone as quickly as it appeared, replaced by his usual impassive mask. "You're mistaken, Adriana. I have no idea what you're talking about."
I leaned forward, my gaze unwavering. "Don't lie to me. I've seen the evidence. The secret meetings. The money changing hands. You've been feeding El Rey information. You've been working against us all along."
Raul didn't flinch. His calmness was unnerving. "If you're so sure of it, why haven't you done anything about it?"
My fury boiled over. "Because I wanted to hear it from you. I wanted you to admit it."
His lips curled into a faint smile, cold and calculated. "And what if I don't?"
"Then I'll make you."
The tension in the room thickened, every moment stretching into eternity. I watched him, waiting for any sign of weakness. But he didn't break.
Finally, Raul spoke, his voice laced with quiet venom. "You've always been blind, Adriana. You've always thought you could control everything. But you're not in charge anymore. El Rey is."
In that moment, I knew for sure. Raul had fully switched allegiances. His words were like a knife to my chest, but I refused to show any weakness. Not now.
"You'll regret this," I said quietly, my voice laced with menace. "You have no idea what you're up against."
Raul's smirk widened. "I've been playing this game longer than you, Adriana. Don't forget who taught you how to play."
The Price of Betrayal
Raul's departure was swift, almost anticlimactic. There was no dramatic confrontation, no epic battle. It was just a quiet severing of ties, a cold acknowledgment that we were no longer allies.
I couldn't trust anyone after that. Not yet. I kept to my closest circle—Rico and Lucia—careful not to reveal too much too soon. But inside, I was already planning. El Rey might have Raul, but I still had resources at my disposal. And I was ready to use them all.
The first step was clear: eliminate the threat before it could grow.
I knew where Raul would go next. He would try to undermine me by attacking the people closest to me. He knew the weak points of my operation, the vulnerable spots that no one else would have the courage to exploit.
But Raul had underestimated me. Because no one had been as deeply ingrained in the Vasquez family as he had been. And no one knew better than I how to fight from within.
Preparing for the War Ahead
I couldn't afford to wait for El Rey to make his next move. I had to act first. Raul might have defected, but I still had allies—old friends, those who owed me favors, people waiting for the right moment to stand with me. Now was that moment.
"Lucia, get the word out," I said, my voice low but urgent. "Raul's gone. El Rey's days are numbered. I want every loyal member of the family to come forward. No one gets left behind."
Lucia nodded, understanding the gravity of my request. "It's time to take the city back."
I turned to Rico, my most trusted lieutenant. "Get the team ready. We move as soon as we have the intel. El Rey won't know what hit him."
Rico's eyes gleamed with resolve. "This ends now."
