Ghost Slayer: My Wife Kanao

Chapter 4: ch4

"If you have time, try killing another ghost," Sam Miller whispered softly.

Suddenly, something came to mind, and he turned his head sharply. His golden pupils reflected in the dark corner where a little girl was curled up. Following his gaze, the girl moved back slightly. She had purple eyes and slightly pink hair, which, perhaps due to long-term malnutrition, appeared a bit withered and yellow.

He stepped forward and looked seriously at the girl. Beneath the dust on her little face, her correct facial features hinted at a certain cuteness. After a double-check, Sam confirmed that the girl in front of him was the future Kanao Tsuyuri.

"I didn't expect my fiancée to be Kanao Tsuyuri," he whispered softly to himself.

However, at this moment, his fiancée was not called Kanao Tsuyuri. In fact, his fiancée did not have a name at all, because from birth, her parents had never given her one.

"Fiancée," he called softly.

The girl didn't speak but raised her head to look at him. She was like a mute.

To be exact, right now, she was no different from a mute because she didn't know how long it had been since she last spoke. Even her eyes were a little empty, as if they no longer contained any human emotions. To be precise, she was no longer good at expressing her feelings.

Seeing this, Sam couldn't help but sigh. He knelt down and gently touched the girl's head.

"Shall we get out of here?" he asked, seeking the girl's opinion, as this place was not safe to stay in for long. Perhaps, it wouldn't be long before people from the Demon Slayer Corps arrived, or maybe someone from the police station would come. Either way, it was a troublesome situation for a ghost like him.

The current era had long changed. It was no longer the era of ghost rule. Now it was the Taisho period, and technology had developed rapidly. Even ghosts might not be able to withstand the roar of artillery fire. Even Muzan Kibutsuji, the ancestor of all demons, was almost buried when a mansion was detonated with a bomb.

Therefore, staying here any longer would be unwise.

The little girl didn't speak, but when his hand gently stroked her head, her eyes seemed to flicker slightly. If his eyes were not sharp enough, he might not have noticed it.

When he didn't get an answer, he didn't hesitate and lifted Kanao Tsuyuri into his arms. As he gently held her, the girl's body visibly trembled but quickly regained her composure.

For Kanao Tsuyuri, the real world was dark. She had received beatings from her parents since childhood, which made her accustomed to submission, unable to understand what resistance meant. Sometimes, she thought about dying, but in the end, she never had the courage.

She didn't know when her suffering would end. Perhaps she was born to endure it. She always hoped for warmth to come one day, but it never did. What awaited her were her parents' beatings day after day. She no longer cried, because whenever she did, her parents' fists and feet would follow.

She also had to suppress her feelings, because emotions were truly a luxury for her. Over time, she became less pained and less expressive. She no longer expected the warmth of this world to come to her.

Sometimes she wondered what she had done wrong to endure all the world's suffering. Now, the man carrying her was her fiancé. He hadn't cared about her existence before. Why did he suddenly look at her with such gentle eyes today? It felt very warm.

Her small hand unconsciously grasped the fabric of his clothing around his neck.

"We'll be home soon," Sam said softly.

Just saying these words made the girl on his back visibly struggle. It seemed, for Kanao Tsuyuri, home was a terrible thing.
