Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Demeaning (2)
In their mouths, there was a complete disparagement of Amanda Smith's status.
"Miss Smith really is..."
"Ah..." Mrs. Johnson shook her head, "I just don't understand how someone can lack self-awareness to such an extent. With her looks, she still fancies becoming Young Madam Johnson. You know, I practically raised her with my own hands, yet she doesn't avoid suspicion at all!"
"It's also because Mr. Samuel is so handsome, women just can't help liking him."
Jane flattered her.
"That's right, my son, how could he not be liked by others!"
...
Amanda stood in place, feeling ice-cold all over.
She liked Samuel Johnson.
Her feelings were known by everyone, and then, trampled upon by them all.
She felt like a clown, being watched by this group of people, looking at her as she groveled for Samuel Johnson, giving everything for him... She dared not to imagine how these people could smile to her face while mocking her behind her back.
Was it a mistake to like someone? Just because of liking someone, did she deserve to be mocked and humiliated like this?
Amanda leaned against the wall. Her back pressed against the cold surface, but the chill seemed not to come from behind her. A sense of coldness slowly rose from where her heart was, and she even had the illusion that she was being frostbitten by their words.
"Miss Amanda, what's wrong with you?"
A servant came over and saw her standing pale in the corner, asking in a somewhat panicked tone.
She inadvertently disrupted the conversation between Mrs. Johnson and another in the living room not far away.
Amanda walked out from the corner, her face extremely pale, shaking her head, "I'm fine."
Not far away, Mrs. Johnson's and Jane's faces took on an ugly look. They had just said so much, and they didn't know how much Amanda had heard!
In the entire Johnson family, it was still Mr. Johnson who held the power, and everyone in the Johnson family knew that Mr. Johnson's favorite person was Amanda!
If she carelessly reported them, what would they do then?
Mrs. Johnson's face turned white in an instant, and she stood up from the sofa and walked towards Amanda.
"Amanda, why do you look so unwell?" she said, reaching out her hand carefully wanting to touch Amanda's cheek.
"..." Seeing her hand reaching over, Amanda instinctively stepped back.
"..." Mrs. Johnson's face stiffened, and her smile froze on her face.
"I am going to work now." Amanda lowered her head, bit her lower lip slightly, and ran towards the door in a fluster.
Watching Amanda's figure disappear at the door, Mrs. Johnson bit her lower lip.
"Madam, what should we do now?" Jane looked towards the door with some worry. "The things we just said must have been heard by Miss Smith! If Mr. Johnson finds out, won't we be in trouble!"
Mrs. Johnson's meticulously painted eyebrows furrowed, and although her status in the Johnson family wasn't high, she had still climbed from the bottom to the position of the eldest son's wife. Without some scheming, how would that be possible?
She gritted her teeth and said, "Don't be afraid! Even if she tells Dad, I have ways to deal with her! Doesn't she like Samuel? I will just go to Samuel and cry about it, who ends up in trouble remains to be seen!"
