God Of Racing

Chapter 23: Wisps of Smoke Rising

Ma Ji, having just finished his meal and about to leave, tugged at Zhuifeng's sleeve.

"What now?" Zhuifeng asked.

"Beautiful girl!" Ma Ji exclaimed.

Seeing Ma Ji's nose-bleeding expression, Zhuifeng looked in the same direction. Damn, an old lady?

"Ma Ji, you..." Zhuifeng turned back to scold him, but Ma Ji had already fled. "Don't run, you brat! You'll be in for it if I catch you!" The two began chasing each other around the cafeteria.

Qiu Nuo and Zheng He's smiling faces suddenly froze, and they quickly shut their eyes.

Zhuifeng, not sure what he stepped on, suddenly lost balance while chasing Ma Ji and veered towards a nearby table. Though the plot might seem cliché, it was actually happening.

"Little Jie, watch out!" Li Ling's warning didn't change anything; instead, it made the situation even more comedic.

Zhao Jie stood up at Li Ling's call, turning to see what danger had caused Li Ling such panic.

And she saw the danger alright - a dark shadow lunging towards her. With no time to dodge, she could only close her eyes.

Zhuifeng realized the impending disaster and frantically waved his arms, trying to regain balance. But it was too late; he could only watch helplessly as he crashed into the girl in front of him.

With a loud "Bang!", the two collided and, due to momentum, fell towards the dining table.

Noticing their changing posture as they fell, Zhuifeng had a quick idea. He tiptoed on the ground, forcibly shifting his body downward, and used his hands to push the person in his arms outward. He managed to push her away, but this accelerated his own fall towards the table.

With a "Clang!", the table remained steady due to its sturdiness, but the bowls on it went flying.

Ignoring the food residue and oil on himself, Zhuifeng got up from the table and asked, "Ahem... are you alright, classmate?"

As he clearly saw the face of the person he had bumped into, Zhuifeng's voice involuntarily lowered.

She appeared to be about sixteen or seventeen, dressed entirely in white. Her face was pale from the shock, but her whole being exuded a snow-like purity. With shoulder-length reddish hair, a hint of blush on her cheeks, and slightly scattered eyes from the fright, she instinctively evoked a desire to protect her.

The familiarity of her appearance and the feeling she evoked struck Zhuifeng. "Little Jie..." he muttered.

"Boss, are you okay?" Ma Ji called out.

Zhuifeng shook his head. "I'm fine. Miss, are you alright? I'm really sorry about that."

How does he know my name? Zhao Jie, who was puzzled by this, was brought back to reality by Ma Ji's arrival. Oh, he said "Miss," not my name.

"Why are you horsing around here? This is the cafeteria!" Li Ling ran over, pulling Zhao Jie behind her and glaring at Zhuifeng. "Can't you read the 'No Running' sign? I really doubt if you're university students if you can't even grasp such basic rules!"

"Little Ling, it's okay. I'm fine," Zhao Jie said.

Ma Ji pouted, "We're sorry. Boss, Mr. Liu is over there. He's calling for you."

"Oh, I'll go right away. I'm really sorry about this. Ma Ji, I'll deal with you later!" Zhuifeng said.

Watching Zhuifeng and Ma Ji walk away, Li Ling scoffed at Zhao Jie, "Look at the kind of people they are! Just saying sorry and leaving, how unreasonable. How could Ling Cheng be with such people? Little Jie, are you okay?"

"I'm fine. Just my clothes are a bit dirty. Let's go back," Zhao Jie replied.

Zhuifeng's body shuddered. Little Jie, her name is Little Jie?

"Boss, where are you going?" Ma Ji called out.

"Let go, I have urgent business!" By the time Zhuifeng shook off Ma Ji and chased out, Zhao Jie and her friends were long gone.

"Boss, what's wrong with you?" Ma Ji caught up, looking curiously at Zhuifeng's flushed face.

"Nothing, nothing!" Zhuifeng looked around once more, then sighed in disappointment. "Come on, let's go see Liu Tang." Could it really be her? I must find out!

.....

"Alright, what's the matter?" Zhuifeng sat down in front of Liu Tang, clearly in a bad mood.

Seeing Zhuifeng's expression, Liu Tang shuddered. He glanced at Zhuifeng and quietly asked Ma Ji, "What's wrong with the boss?"

Ma Ji shrugged, pouted, and shook his head.

"What exactly is going on?" Zhuifeng asked again, louder this time due to his mood.

"It's... it's still that matter. He specifically wants... Hey, boss, at least listen before you leave... Damn! I don't know what's gotten into him, his temper seems pretty bad."

"Who knows," Ma Ji shrugged helplessly. "But Mr. Liu, what were you talking about?"

"Go ask the boss yourself... And hurry up and follow him, in case something happens. I'm leaving first!"

Seeing Liu Tang about to leave, Ma Ji pouted, "If you're so worried, why don't you go?"

"Damn! Have you forgotten I'm a teacher? Now that your military training is over, the second, third, and fourth-year students are returning to school. How do I have time to go wandering around?" Hehe, its actually mainly because the boss is like an unexploded volcano right now, and I don't want to be the one to ignite that bomb.

Watching the 'graceful' Liu Tang walk away, Ma Ji muttered under his breath, "Damn, I really did forget you were a teacher."

After wandering around outside without seeing Zhuifeng, Ma Ji returned to the dorm. "Number Three, Number Four, where's the boss?... Huh, why isn't Number Four here either? Where did he go?"

"How should I know? Wasn't he with you?" Qiu Nuo lazily lay on the bed, not even opening his eyes.

"Damn, you don't know where he ran off to. So annoying!"

At this moment, Zhuifeng was frantically searching the entire campus, running up to every girl in white clothes to take a look. As a result, he didn't find the person he was looking for but earned himself the nickname "pervert"!

Actually, this was his own doing. He didn't consider the fact that the girls clearly wouldn't tolerate having oil stains on their clothes.

...

In the girls' dormitory.

"Hey, Little Jie, didn't you say you hate guys who can't drink but insist on drinking? Why didn't you scold him earlier?"

"Disliking someone doesn't mean you have to say it out loud, right?" Zhao Jie adjusted her clothes. "Little Ling, how does this outfit look on me?"

Li Ling took a glance, "Oh my! How do you look good in whatever you wear? I'm so jealous of you!"

"Hehe... you're joking. Do you really think it looks good?"

"What's going on? Little Jie, why are you dressing up so formally? It's just a talent show tomorrow night, not a blind date!"

"It's not that! I won't be attending tomorrow night's show..."

"A date?"

"No way! Do you know about street racing?"

"No idea!"

"You're hopeless! It'd be pointless to explain it to you. Just understand this: I'm not dressing up for tomorrow's show or for a date or anything like that, but for tomorrow night's street race!"

"Does Chongqing have street racing?"

"Oh my! Even most medium-sized cities have it now, don't you know? It's just... sigh... underground racing for now. But I heard the Oriental Group wants to organize an international racing league in China, so it won't be long before these races come out into the open."

"But you don't need to dress so beautifully for that!" Li Ling couldn't stand Zhao Jie's enthusiasm for racing.

"That's because you don't understand the significance of this race. This isn't just any ordinary race. I heard it's between our Chongqing's racing god and some Japanese racer who appeared out of nowhere! So how can I not dress up?"

Spits-Blood! Is there such a thing?

"Racing god?"

"Yes! He's the best racer in Chongqing's racing scene. I heard he's also called 'Wind God'!" Zhao Jie fell silent at this point.

"Oh, so you want to go find your 'Wind' friend, right?"

"Little Ling, you promised you wouldn't make fun of me." Zhao Jie's face suddenly turned red.

"Cut it out! There's no one else here, what are you afraid of? But, does your friend really race? Don't forget, that was just a childhood joke!"

Zhao Jie became confused. Yes, we were so young then. Brother Feng, did you take it to heart? Brother Feng, is it really you?...

Seeing her expression, Little Ling sighed, "There's no use thinking about it. You'll know when you go see tomorrow, right? Hmm, what should I wear?"

"That's true... Wait, you're going too?"

"Hehe, I've been wanting to meet your Brother Feng for a long time! Now that there's a chance, how could I pass it up?"

.....

At the Zhongshen Racing Team base! Office building! Chairman's office!

"Chairman, good news!"

Zhang Song rudely barged in. "Chairman... ahem, sorry... I didn't mean to interrupt."

Putting down the documents in hand, the Chairman said, "Go ahead, Zhang Song. We're all our own people here. What news has got you so excited?"

Scratching his head embarrassedly, Zhang Song said, "You know how we've been negotiating with the Oriental Group about the league these days? Well, I went looking for that 050302."

"Didn't you say he resigned and you couldn't find him? So, have you found him now?"

"No, I haven't. But I thought about it. The racing scene in Chongqing isn't that big, but no one knows about 050302, and we couldn't find the one called Wind God either. So I wondered, could they be the same person?"

"The same person?" The Chairman stood up and paced a few steps. "Hmm, it's possible. So, have you found Wind God?"

"Not yet."

"What do you mean? Zhang, can you please finish your thoughts in one go?"

Sweat! Wasn't it you who interrupted me?

"I just heard some news from a racing group. Wind God has reappeared! After more than a month, Wind God has returned to the racing scene! And he's going to race against a Japanese racer! Now not only is Chongqing's racing community in an uproar, but racers from surrounding areas like Chengdu, Guiyang, and Changsha have been arriving in Chongqing today."

"Such a big commotion?" The Chairman was surprised. "How come no one rushes to watch our official races?"

"I don't know about that, but logically, with underground racing causing such a stir, it should have caught the attention of the traffic department. But strangely, because I was worried about any changes to the event, I specifically went to the traffic police headquarters, but they're completely ignoring this matter!" Zhang Song said, puzzled. "Could Wind God's identity be very influential?"

"That's possible! But, Zhang, there's another possibility." The Chairman looked at Zhang Song. "Don't you understand? Have you forgotten about World War II? You just said that Wind God's opponent this time is Japanese! I think the traffic police not only won't stop it, but they might even clear the way for it!"

...

Everyone had thought of and eliminated every possible obstacle to this race, but no one had considered whether the person in question had agreed or not. How laughable, but who told China to have the habit of making a mountain out of a molehill?

After searching everywhere he could think of without finding the person he was looking for, Zhuifeng returned to the dorm exhausted.

"Boss... you..."

"Let me shower first!" He stumbled into the bathroom and emerged after a while.

"Boss, what were you doing? Why were you all sweaty earlier?"

"Nothing." He collapsed onto the bed.

"Fuck, I despise you!"

"What's wrong?" It seems I need to improve my stamina. How come I'm so sore and weak after just running for a bit? Zhuifeng thought weakly as he asked. But he didn't realize that the "bit" he was thinking of was actually three or four hours.

"What's wrong!?" Ma Ji was extremely upset. "You just missed a chance to get to know Zhao Jie, who's now recognized as the most beautiful girl in our grade. I really wouldn't doubt it if it came out you're impotent. So disappointing!"

"Her name is Zhao Jie?" With strength from who knows where, Zhuifeng suddenly flipped off the bed and ran over to grab Ma Ji. "Her name is really Zhao Jie?"

"Boss... let... let go! It hurts..."

"Ahem..." Zhuifeng quickly released his grip. "Is her name really Zhao Jie?"

"Yes, her name is really Zhao Jie. She's in our department, in class 2," Qiu Nuo, who had been silent until now, said sympathetically, glancing at Ma Ji.

Rubbing the spot where Zhuifeng had gripped him, Ma Ji was about to complain when he saw Zhuifeng walking slowly to the window with a blank expression.

"Boss, you... you're not going to do something stupid, are you?"

Qiu Nuo and Zheng He quickly got up from their beds. "Boss, you..."

Zhuifeng, who had been looking down, suddenly raised his head. He closed his eyes, and tears slowly trickled down his cheeks. He raised his hand and said, "I can't believe, I've finally found you..."
