Chapter 25: Chapter 25 Survive Today
Although Law doesn't know everything about Chrollo, he definitely knows Chrollo better than Machi and the others.
More than ten years later, Chrollo would become a dangerous figure, no less powerful than Hisoka.
Although Chrollo is only twelve years old now, he cannot be underestimated.
"So, how much can this piece of wood actually sell for?" Machi stared at the Hand of Ominous Signs in Chrollo's hand. Though Chrollo mentioned fifty percent of the market price earlier, he hadn't provided an exact figure.
"Machi, it's not just a random piece of wood. It has a name. It's called the Hand of Ominous Signs." Law reminded again.
"Oh."
Machi replied with a nod, though it was hard to tell if she took it seriously.
"It should be worth around 8 million Jenny. If we take it to the Southernpiece Auction at Yorknew City, the price might increase by 20% if a determined collector shows up."
Chrollo then passed the Hand of Ominous Signs to Law, who hesitated for a moment before taking it with his hands.
"Eight million Jenny?" Machi was stunned.
What does eight million Jenny mean? One pound of rice in Meteor City costs five hundred Jenny. Eight million Jenny can buy nearly sixteen thousand pounds of rice!
"Looks like we've struck gold." Law's eyes lit up. He didn't expect such a broken piece of wood was actually worth eight million Jenny. If he could find a buyer, they would be able to afford eating meat every day even with the outrageous prices on Meteor City.
Thinking of this, Law glanced at Machi, relieved that he finally didn't have to eat rice soup every day.
It had been torturous for him, especially with his sensitive palate. The rice Machi cooked didn't even go through proper rinsing, because in Meteor City, clean water was a commodity that had to be bought, making it a scarce and precious resource.
Machi also turned to look at Law. She was wondering if the triple interest rate she set before was too low.
"That's right."
Just as they were feeling excited, Chrollo reminded: "Everything I just said has no solid basis."
"Huh?"
Law and Machi were stunned, then looked at Chrollo in confusion.
"I made this judgment based on the knowledge I got from books and the information I heard from others. I can't guarantee that the Hand of Ominous Signs can really sell for eight million Jenny." Chrollo said with a faint smile.
"..." Law and Machi were speechless.
Chrollo continued, "However, I could introduce you to a potential buyer. If it's him, I'm sure he'll be interested."
"Oh? Someone from Meteor City?" Law was a little expectant.
"Yes, he is the elder in charge of East District." Chrollo replied.
"Elder?" Machi's expression changed upon hearing this.
Chrollo glanced at Machi and asked, "Besides the Elders, who else here would be interested in this kind of collection?"
Machi was speechless and could only nod in agreement.
The living environment in Meteor City is rather harsh, so how could the residents be willing to spend so much money to collect a piece of broken wood?
"That makes things easier. How do I sell it to him?" Law asked eagerly.
He was desperate to sell the Hand of Ominous Signs as soon as possible. Not only to pay back the medical expenses to Chrollo, but also to improve their meals. Right now, there is nothing more important than selling the Hand of Ominous Signs.
"It's not difficult to do it. I can take you to see the Elder, but…" The smile on Chrollo's face slowly faded, and his expression suddenly turned cold.
The sudden shift in his demeanor caused the room's atmosphere to grow tense.
Law frowned slightly, and even Machi looked surprised. Both of them could feel the indifference that Chrollo deliberately revealed.
His change in demeanor was too obvious to miss. One moment, he was warm and gentle, but at the next, he became cold and distant.
"The prerequisite is that you can survive today." Chrollo finished his words after the pause.
"What do you mean?" Law's eyes narrowed.
Machi's heart skipped a beat. As a resident of Meteor City, the first thing she thought of after hearing Chrollo's words was Cook who died at Law's hands.
"Let's discuss this somewhere else." Chrollo said and put his hands in his pockets. He did not answer Law's question immediately, but instead walked towards the inner hall.
He seemed to be very familiar with this place, and the direction he chose seemed to lead to the room where Uvogin and Nobunaga were.
Law suppressed his doubts and followed Chrollo.
Machi gritted her teeth slightly and followed in silence.
There were twenty-one rooms in the church, neither too many nor too few, and each room had two beds.
Uvogin and Nobunaga were placed in the same room.
Led by Chrollo, the three came to the room where Uvogin and Nobunaga were.
"Yo." Seeing Law and the others, Uvogin, who was lying on the bed, greeted them.
Uvogin appeared to be in good spirits. Thanks to his naturally strong constitution and his recent awakening of Nen, his Enhancement Category would likely enable him to recover within a month. Nobunaga, on the other hand, would need several months to fully.
At this moment, Nobunaga was fast asleep. He believed that the longer he slept while injured, the faster his recovery would be.
Law nodded in response to Uvogin, then closed the door behind them. He looked at Chrollo and asked: "What did you mean by what you said earlier?"
Machi stood silently beside Law, looking at Chrollo in silence, while Uvogin looked puzzled.
Chrollo slowly turned around and looked at the calm Law. A faint smile appeared on his face again as he said, "Cook was from East District. Actually, it doesn't matter if he is killed."
"Cook?" Law pondered aloud. The mention of the name reminded him of the bald man he had killed yesterday. In fact, Law hadn't bothered remembering the man's name.
"The person who died in your hands." Chrollo said lightly.
"And then?" Law asked with a nod, then chuckled and added with genuine curiosity, "Could it be that he has some powerful siblings bent on avenging that pervert?"
A look of surprise suddenly appeared in Chrollo's eyes.
Seeing the surprise in Chrollo's eyes, Law was a little dumbfounded, 'Was I right? I was just joking!'
"You guessed partially correctly. Cook had a twin brother, but his existence has nothing to do with whether or not you survive today." As he said this, the surprise in Chrollo's eyes disappeared.
"Go on." Law urged calmly.
"You're unusually composed." Chrollo said, the corners of his mouth curled slightly.
Law shrugged and smiled, "When the enemy comes, we will fight them with our troops, and when the water comes, we will block it with earth."
When he killed Cook yesterday, he hadn't thought too deeply about the consequences. Even if Meteor City had a rule that prohibited killing fellow citizens, as long as he didn't kill people in public, there were usually no repercussions.
Machi had explained this to him before.
Taking a step back, even if the Council of Elders asked him to pay with his life for the crimes he committed, would he just obey? Absolutely not.
Meteor City was a place Law could leave anytime.
Chrollo took a deep look at Law, who remained calm, and continued, "The Council of Elders has a cooperative relationship with the Mafia. The Mafia provides the Council of Elders with heavy metals, weapons, and supplies, while the Council of Elders provides the Mafia with high-quality talent."
"Today is one of their scheduled transaction days, and Cook is one of the agreed members. According to the plan, he was supposed to leave Meteor City today and become an enforcer for the Mafia."
"But you killed him. So, East District is now one person short for their agreement with the Mafia. The Elder already knew about Cook's death and knew that you were the one who killed him."
"If you can survive today, it means the Elder has chosen not to pursue the matter further. In that case, you'll naturally be able to sell the Hand of Ominous Signs to the Elder."
After hearing Chrollo's explanation, Law came to a realization. Then, he stretched out his hands and pressed them on Machi's shoulders, and said with exaggerated seriousness: "Machi, I'm going to run away. I'll leave the Hand of Ominous Signs to you. Just consider it payment for the food."
"…" Chrollo.
"…" Machi.
"…" Wo Jin.
....
Author's Note:
The exchange rate of the Jenny in Hunter x Hunter is the same as that of the Japanese Yen, and the cost of living in Meteor City is ten times higher than average.
