Gurren Lagann - mecha lord

Chapter 4: The Beginning

Simon led Goro and Kamina through a maze of tunnels, the paths twisting and turning as they ventured deeper into an area Goro hadn't mapped yet. The walls were damp, and the air grew heavier with each step, but Simon pressed on, clearly too excited to notice.

"Just a bit further," Simon said, his voice echoing faintly off the stone walls.

"Geez, how far did you even dig this time?" Kamina grumbled, brushing dirt off his shoulder. "This better not be some giant mole pig statue or something."

"It's not!" Simon shot back, determination in his voice. "You'll see!"

Finally, they reached a cavern that was larger than anything Goro had seen in the village. The space was vast, lit faintly by bioluminescent moss clinging to the walls. And in the center of the cavern, partially buried in the rocky floor, was what Simon had described—a massive metallic face.

"There it is!" Simon said, his voice filled with pride as he gestured toward the discovery.

Goro approached the object slowly, his eyes scanning every detail. It was unmistakable. The rounded edges, the fierce expression etched into the metal, it was Lagann.

"This is it," Goro whispered, almost to himself. His hands trembled as he reached out to touch the surface of the gunman's face. It was cold and unyielding, just as Simon had said, but the feeling of its presence was undeniable.

"What the hell is this thing?" Kamina asked, stepping closer and tilting his head. "It's freaky. But kinda cool."

"It's a gunman," Goro said firmly, his voice filled with certainty.

Simon and Kamina exchanged confused glances.

"A what?" Kamina asked.

Goro turned to face them, his expression serious. "It's a machine—one of the strongest weapons humanity has ever known. And if we can get it working, it might be our way out of here."

Simon's eyes widened. "You mean… it can help us reach the surface?"

"Not just the surface," Goro said, his voice rising with excitement. "This thing could help us take on the whole damn world."

Kamina's face broke into a wide grin. "Now you're talking my language!" he said, punching his fist into his palm. "Let's wake this thing up and get the hell out of this hole!"

"Not yet," Goro said firmly, his voice calm but resolute.

"Again?!" Kamina snapped, his frustration boiling over. He grabbed Goro by the shoulders and shook him back and forth. "With this, we finally have a way to escape, and you want us to wait again?! Goro, what the hell is wrong with you?"

"Kamina… wait… let me explain!" Goro struggled to get the words out as Simon tugged at Kamina's arm, trying to separate the two.

"Huff… huff…" Goro caught his breath, gently prying Kamina's hands off his shoulders. "It's not that I don't want things to start rolling," he began, his tone measured, "but we can't activate the gunman without a key, which we're still missing."

Kamina furrowed his brow, his grip on Goro loosening. "A key? What kind of key?"

Goro climbed into the cockpit of the gunman, his hands brushing over the smooth metallic surfaces of the controls. As he ran his fingers along the console, he felt a specific indentation a small, spiral-shaped keyhole. He turned to face them, pointing to it.

"This," Goro said, "is what we're missing. The core drill. Without it, Lagann won't start. If we had the core drill, then—"

Kamina cut him off, his fiery determination reigniting. "So all we need is this 'key thingy,' huh? Then what the hell are we waiting for? Let's start digging right now!"

"Kamina, wait!" Goro said, climbing out of the cockpit. "The core drill isn't something you can just dig up like any old treasure. It's unique, and it's not going to be easy to find. We have to approach this carefully."

"Carefully?" Kamina repeated, crossing his arms and glaring at Goro. "You've been saying that for years. I'm done waiting, Goro. If this thing is our ticket out of here, then I'm going to find that key, no matter how long it takes!"

"Bro…" Simon said hesitantly

Goro sighed. "Kamina, I get it. I want out of here just as much as you do. But rushing blindly won't get us anywhere. Let me think this through. I'll figure out where to start looking."

Simon stood there awkwardly, glancing between the two, scratching the back of his head nervously. "Actually… I might have the core drill."

"Exactly, we ne—" Kamina started, then froze. "Wait. What? You have it?"

Both Goro and Kamina stared at Simon in shock.

Simon hesitantly raised his hand, holding up a small, spiral-shaped drill. It gleamed faintly in the dim light, its distinctive design unmistakable. "I found it while digging a few days ago. I thought it looked interesting, so I kept it…"

Goro's eyes widened. "That's it! That's the core drill!" He grabbed it from Simon's hand, inspecting it closely.

"Simon, you're a genius!" Goro exclaimed, his excitement spilling over. Without warning, he pulled Simon into a tight hug, lifting the smaller boy off the ground.

"Goro… I… can't… breathe…" Simon wheezed, his face turning red.

"Oh, sorry!" Goro quickly put Simon down, but before Simon could catch his breath, Kamina swooped in, wrapping him in a bear hug of his own.

"Simon, you're our savior!" Kamina declared, spinning the poor boy around. "With this, we're finally breaking out of this dump!"

Simon's voice came out in a muffled protest, "B-bro… I'm d-dizzy…"

Kamina finally set Simon down, and the boy staggered, trying to steady himself.

"This is it," Goro said, holding the core drill tightly in his hand. "This is what we've been waiting for. Simon, you've just given us a chance to change everything."

Kamina grinned, slapping Simon on the back. "You hear that, Simon? You're the hero of Giha Village! We're going to the surface, and it's all thanks to you!"

Simon blushed at the praise, rubbing the back of his neck. "I just… I just wanted to help…"

"Help? You've done more than that," Kamina said, his voice booming with confidence. "You've given us the key to our destiny!"

Goro looked at them both, his heart swelling with determination. "All right, let's not waste any more time. Simon, Kamina, get in"

The three climbed into the cockpit together, their movements awkward in the confined space.

"Ugh, it's kind of cramped in here," Simon muttered, shifting uncomfortably.

"Bear with it for now, Simon," Goro replied, gripping the core drill tightly in his hand. He leaned forward, carefully inserting the drill into the keyhole. His hands trembled, not from fear, but pure, uncontainable excitement. This was it. Everything in his life, both past and present, had been leading up to this moment. His regrets, his hopes, his dreams, they all hinged on what came next.

"What are you waiting for? Turn it already!" Kamina urged, his voice brimming with enthusiasm. He practically vibrated with energy, leaning in as if he could will the machine to life through sheer determination.

Simon, seated beside them, nodded eagerly. "Yeah, Goro! Let's do it!"

Goro glanced at his two best friends, feeling their shared anticipation. It was infectious. A determined smile spread across his face.

"Yeah, you're right," Goro said, gripping the drill firmly. "Here goes nothing."

He twisted the core drill.

As the drill turned, the cockpit lit up with a blinding spiral of green and gold light, swirling around them like a storm of energy. The walls of the gunman began to vibrate, gears grinding and mechanisms coming to life after what must have been decades,or longer, of dormancy.

The cockpit screens lit up, displaying a flurry of symbols and diagrams. A deep, rumbling noise resonated from within the machine, as though it were waking from a long slumber.

"It's alive!" Kamina exclaimed, punching the air.

"Whoa!" Simon clung to the edge of his seat as the gunman jerked forward slightly, testing its newly restored systems.

Goro's eyes were locked on the controls, his heart pounding in his chest. He tightened his grip on the levers in front of him. "All right, Lagann," he muttered under his breath, a grin spreading across his face. "Let's see what you can do."

The gunman's eyes glowed brightly, illuminating the dark cavern around them. The ground beneath them rumbled as Lagann prepared to move, its spiraling power coursing through its core.

"Let's go!" Goro shouted.

The ground trembled beneath Lagann as it came to life, its mechanical joints creaking and grinding as though shaking off the rust of centuries. The spiraling energy pulsed outwards, creating waves of heat and light that illuminated the entire cavern.

The villagers, who had gathered nearby, froze in their tracks as they witnessed the spectacle. Some shielded their eyes from the brightness, while others gasped in awe and fear.

"What is that thing?" a voice shouted from the crowd.

"It's a monster!" another cried.

"No, it's… it's alive!" someone else exclaimed, their tone filled with a mixture of terror and wonder.

Kamina leaned out of the cockpit, grinning from ear to ear. "That's right, everyone! Behold the might of Lagann! With this, we're going to pierce the heavens and break free from this underground prison!"

Simon, still clutching the edge of his seat, looked out over the villagers. "They're scared," he murmured.

"They're in awe," Goro corrected, his hands steady on the controls. "This is more than they've ever seen in their lives. But soon, they'll see what it can do, and why we need it."

Lagann's legs shifted, the powerful machine taking its first unsteady step forward. The ground cracked beneath its massive weight, and a cloud of dust rose into the air.

"Easy, easy," Goro muttered to himself, carefully maneuvering the controls. His familiarity with machinery from his past life paid off as he quickly adjusted to the gunman's unique movements.

The machine's second step was more confident, its towering frame stabilizing. Kamina cheered, pumping his fist. "That's what I'm talking about, Goro! You're a natural!"

Some of the villagers began to step closer, their initial fear giving way to curiosity.

"What is it?" a young child asked, peering up at the glowing eyes of Lagann.

"It's not a monster," Shimu, the old caretaker, said with wide eyes. "It's a weapon… a gift from the gods."

Goro sighed but didn't correct her. Let them think what they wanted for now. His focus was on one thing, proving that this was the key to their freedom.

"Hold on tight," Goro said to Kamina and Simon.

"What are you doing now?" Kamina asked, though he sounded more thrilled than concerned.

"We're testing its real power," Goro replied.

With a firm grip, Goro pulled one of the levers, and Lagann surged forward, its drills spinning and glowing with an intense spiral energy. The machine slammed into a nearby wall of rock, the drills cutting through the dense stone like butter.

Chunks of debris rained down as Lagann pushed further, carving a new tunnel into the unknown.

The villagers erupted into chaos, some crying out in fear, others cheering as they saw the potential of this incredible machine.

"Don't stop now!" Kamina shouted.

Simon, his eyes wide, whispered, "We're really going to the surface, aren't we?"

Goro grinned.
