Chapter 60: A magnificent display of magic
Fleur's fingers tightly wrapped around her wand as she fired off another blast at the Grindylow king.
The monstrous creature's jagged, grotesque features contorted as the spell hit its mark and singed his thick, dark skin.
He only bellowed in defiance.
'Tough, unrelenting beast,' Fleur thought, gritting her teeth.
The king seemed impervious to her attacks, shrugging off spells that should have dealt grievous wounds to him.
If her normal spell repertoire wasn't up for the task, she'd have to resort to more drastic measures.
With a deep breath, Fleur focused, closing herself from the new, welcoming, feeling that the depths offered her.
'Easy,' she thought, feeling the familiar warmth of her inner fire begin to build and reach out to her fingertips.
"Diggory, keep the Grindylows off me while I deal with this bastard!" Fleur called out, glancing over her shoulder to ensure her fellow champion was with her.
Cedric looked at her, uncertainty plain on his face.
For a moment, Fleur thought that he'd say no, his face a mask of concentration and dread as he weighed some silent thought.
But then, his gaze met hers, and he gave a curt nod.
"Alright."
He immediately pulled back his wand and cast a spell according to the girl's wishes.
"Repello Maxima!"
A shimmering barrier of force pushed back the screeching, clawed creatures, creating a temporary, almost safe space.
Almost, because, their king remained unaffected by the spell, its massive form still looming menacingly before them.
The creature's blood-red eyes narrowed, focusing on Cedric with a predatory intensity.
Undeterred, the boy ignored the Grindylow, knowing that his next spells would need his utter concentration, and trusting Delacour to defend him.
"Protego Maxima. Fianto Duri. Repello Inimicum."
Three spells.
The layered barrier sprang to life, radiating with a faint blue luminescence, forming a reinforced bubble around the two champions and the colossal Grindylow.
Cedric's face was pale from the exertion, but he held on; his wand unwavering…
Fleur watched amazed as the protective sphere swiftly formed around them.
It didn't have a big radius, but she was impressed nonetheless.
The spell, she knew, was a creation of the world champion duellist, Filius Flitwick.
'Merde. I didn't expect any of the other champions to be good enough to cast something like this,' she thought with a mix of surprise and respect.
Although she most probably had the skill to cast the spell, it'd take relentless practice to manage to successfully cast it; it was that difficult.
Fleur could feel the intensity of Diggory's effort and silently commended him.
Turning back to the king, she could see him swimming towards her companion, probably intending to take down the shield.
The king's jagged, twisted sword gleamed ominously as he gripped it with his clawed, sinewy hands.
Cedric's face was a mask of concentration and he didn't notice the approaching threat.
However, that didn't matter.
'I'm ready.'
Fleur used the opening to surge forward, her wand aimed squarely at the massive beast.
"FLAMMA SWATHE."
Fleur waved her wand and a small, white-hot flame, burned on the beast's upper torso.
The flames spread around the Grindylow king's body, undeterred by the water's fire-extinguishing properties...
The monster shrieked, a horrible, grating sound that vibrated through the depths, and his grip on his weapon slackened as the enchanted flames licked his skin, hissing and cracking as they burned him.
Out of the corner of her eye, Fleur saw a grindylow approach the barrier and get incinerated.
Fleur grinned to herself, eyes focusing back on her target and she pressed her advantage.
"Ignis cluvee," she whispered fiercely.
The Grindylow king's shrieks turned into guttural, choking sounds as new flames got conjured and formed a cage around him, searing its body.
His weapon fell from his hand, sinking slowly to the lake bed below, whilst he clawed feebly at the flames that encased him.
His helpless expression gave Fleur a momentary pause.
'What the hell am I doing?' the French girl questioned herself, watching in horror at the poor creature.
She shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts.
This wasn't the time for hesitation or moral quandaries.
It was a fight, and in a fight, it was either kill or be killed.
She opened her mouth, ready to cast a finishing spell, but her momentary falter cost her.
Due to her wavering, Fleur's fire spells lost some of their potency and the Grindylow king, being the relentless cockroach he was, seized the opportunity…
With a sudden burst of strength, it broke free from the fiery cage, its charred body still smoking but its eyes blazing with renewed fury.
Dropping all thoughts of self-preservation, the mad creature lunged at Fleur, claws extended, aiming for her throat.
Fleur's eyes widened in horror as she realised what her hesitation was about to cost her.
She tried to turn her body away, but she was too slow.
The king's claws grazed her shoulder, drawing blood.
Fleur gasped in pain as she desperately tried to put distance between herself and the enraged creature.
Her efforts were for naught though.
It was in its own habitat, and it moved far faster than she could.
The Grindylows' claws were mere inches from her face when suddenly, a blinding green light filled her vision.
"Avada Kedavra," a cold voice hissed.
The spell hit the Grindylow king square in the chest, and for a moment, time seemed to stand still.
Then, without a single sound, the creature's body went rigid.
It began to drift lifelessly to the lake bed.
Fleur whirled around, her eyes wide with shock and fear, to see who had cast the Unforgivable Curse.
However, there was no one there…
Her attention returned to the dead Grindylow, and that's when she saw her wand.
Her still-aimed wand, which was pointing directly at the dead creature.
A chill ran down her spine.
'Merde,' Fleur thought, her mind reeling from the realisation.
Suddenly, the cold voice echoed in her mind, and she could clearly hear herself whispering the two deadly words.
The Killing Curse had come from her lips…
She had cast an Unforgivable Curse, and worse, she barely remembered doing it.
The implications were more than terrifying, but she had no time to dwell on them because just then, a terrible roar echoed through the water.
Fleur felt the hair on the back of her neck stand up.
She looked over at Cedric, who had gone pale, whether that was from the roar or her spell, Fleur didn't know.
She wondered what went wrong again as she saw a cloaked figure encompassing the giant snake that Harry had been fighting with.
