Harry Potter: The art of divination

Chapter 241: Trial of the century

*Morpheus pov*

Honestly, this whole situation was beginning to feel like a chore. Trials were much more interesting hundreds of years ago. Though perhaps now they are more fair.

"Very well," Albus spoke his eyes panning over to my side of the courtroom, "We shall begin. In the trial of Morpheus Everglade, I will first call the prosecution to present their opening statement."

My prosecutor stood I didn't know his name but from the reactions of those watching he seemed like a big deal, "Honorable members of the Wizengamot, esteemed Chief Warlock, and gathered witnesses, we convene today to address a matter of grave importance. Before you sit Lord Morpheus Everglade, a man of charm and influence, whose reputation precedes him—but whose actions now demand scrutiny."

"It is no secret that Lord Everglade has long occupied a position of power within our society. A professor, a noble, and a figure of intrigue in political circles. Yet today, we must not allow his titles, his lineage, or his silver tongue to cloud our judgment. This case is not about who Morpheus Everglade claims to be. It is about what he has done—or perhaps more accurately, what he has orchestrated in the shadows."

Oh my, it seems like I hold a high position in society! More than half of these people don't even believe in divination high position indeed.

"The evidence against him is clear. Witnesses have testified to his presence at the scene of a violent altercation following the most recent Wizengamot session. What was initially portrayed as an 'attack' on him was, upon closer inspection, an incident riddled with inconsistencies. How convenient that he should emerge unscathed, while others bear the brunt of the conflict—others, I might add, whose loyalties were well-known to align with this very institution's laws and order.

"But this is not a case of mere happenstance or unfortunate coincidence. No, my lords and ladies. The truths of this conspiracy run deeper,

"Lord Everglade has refused counsel, demanded a swift trial, and exhibited a level of arrogance that borders on contempt for this court. Why? Because he believes himself untouchable. He believes that his clever words and calculated charisma will shield him from accountability.

"But today, we must demonstrate that no man, no matter how noble his blood or how beguiling his persona, stands above the law. This trial is not just about Lord Everglade. It is about ensuring that justice prevails over power, and that truth triumphs over deception.

"We will present the evidence. We will lay bare the connections, the motives, and the outcomes of his actions. And at the end of this trial, I do not doubt that you, as the guardians of justice, will see Lord Morpheus Everglade for what he truly is—a man who believes himself a player in a game of shadows but who has overstepped his bounds and must now face the consequences."

With a sharp bow to the Chief Warlock, he sat down, his eyes never leaving my form.

"Very well, it is your turn now Morpheus," Albus said gesturing for me to stand

"Thank you," I said with a small smile as I stood looking around the room I was surrounded by people who knew very little about me and about the situation.

Maybe I should change that, "I must say I'm overjoyed at the high praise I have just received. To be called the puppet master in the shadows using my oh-so-prodigious position inside Hogwarts to manipulate events is truly amazing what our imaginations can conjure."

"I am accused of killing an innocent Noble after the last Wizengamot session now they will have you believe I orchestrated an attack on my life just so I can kill one man an unimportant man at whom I didn't even know his name. Laughable really, though I must say I'm excited to see this evidence. I realize it has been a tiring week for everyone, so I asked the trial to be sped up no more no less we should quickly move away from this farce and focus on the real issues. Just the other week Voldermort had the Quill and Duskborn children killed it was such a tragedy what will next wee-"

"OBJECTION OBJECTION! This is clear speculation and contaminating the chamber! There is no evidence to support what he says those children were the result of Aurors strike this from the record!" I was rudely interrupted

Before Albus could respond I cut in, "Oh I'm sorry my mind wanders sometimes with it so fresh on my mind after the last Wizengamot. Of course, the Aurors killed them! After all, they were found at the scene of a raid after being missing for a day their cause of death was the killing curse! Of course, it was the Auror's silly me may I continue with my opening statement?"

The chamber was barely keeping quiet I could see both families of the victims wanted to jump from their seats and hear more.

"Morpheus one more statement like that and this trial will be over behave yourself!" Albus demanded with a heavy disapproving frown

"Of course of course pardon my words I misspoke."

"Now as I was saying, during this trial the prosecutors will show you evidence of nothing it will be speculation at best while I will provide you with solid evidence supporting my claim the young man who unfortunately passed was not only one of my attackers but also a terrorist!" the chamber erupted and the prosecutor was shouting more nonsense as I took my seat

This was fun.

"I'm done with my opening statement." I declared

Albus worked the chamber into settling down before allowing the prosecution to proceed, "I will call my first witness, Lord Avery."

Lord Avery entered the chamber and sat before the proceedings, "Lord Avery you were in attendance during the last Wizengamot?"

Avery nodded, "I was." he seemed like a stern man we wouldn't get along

"Can you describe for us what led up to the incident?"

"I can, we were just leaving the chamber after a long meeting when I along with everyone else heard the sound of someone shouting a spell. Chaos ensued and I along with many others drew are wands to combat the attackers. It was then I saw Morpheus Everglade killing them along with the innocent Heir Ralis who also drew his wand like many of us."

"Was he standing close to the attackers?"

"Many of us were It was not a very large hallway but it was clear he was prepared to defend himself against the attackers."

"How was it clear?"

"He was facing toward them."

"Do you think Morpheus targeted him?"

I sighed, "Objection leading and speculative."

"Accepted," Albus ruled

"Very well." the prosecutor smiled, "I am done with my witness thank you, Lord Avery."

Albus turned to me, "The floor is yours."

I stood, "Are you friends with Lord Ralis?" I asked

"Objection relevance!"

I turned, "I thought we were discussing heir Ralis's death is there another Ralis family I'm not familiar with?"

Albus chimed in, "Overruled Morpheus continue."

"Well answer the question then." I gestured for Avery to spit it out

"We are acquainted, I wouldn't call us more than that."

"I see, is it true you have a weekly tea time with Lord Ralis?"

His eyes widened in shock no doubt wondering how I knew that, "Yes we have tea on occasion."

I laughed, "I wouldn't call weekly occasionally but to each their own. So you have a weekly tea time with someone you claim you barely know?"

Avery bit out, "Yes."

"So the witness has a weekly tea time with the Lord who is trying to imprison me. I'd say that is a conflict of interest. Very well I'm done with my questions."

The trial followed this pattern for a while he called new witnesses claiming Stweart Ralis was pulling his wand for defense and nothing more. Funnily enough, no one would share a memory.

Eventually, it was my turn to present witnesses, "I call Auror Sax to the stand." he was escorted in by two others as he took his seat

"You were one of the first on the scene?" I asked

"I was."

"How long have you been an Auror?" I followed

He thought for a moment before smiling, "Five years in a month."

I nodded along, "Congratulations. Now when you entered the scene do you recall what side the body of Heir Ralis was?"

"Yes, he was on his back."

"Interesting, now if he was facing his back to me and front to the attackers how is it he laid on his back when you found him?"

"Well, I'm not sure."

"Could it have been the spell I used to kill him flipped the body?"

"Not likely, he had a puncture wound on his stomach."

"I see thank you."

The prosecutor stood, "In your professional opinion is it possible for the body to be flipped? Have you ruled it out?"

The Auror squirmed, "Well it might be possible."

"Thank you."

He was soon dismissed, "I have one more witness and he has deigned to give us a memory."

Albus nodded, "Good, bring in the pensive." he told two Aurors who nodded and left the room

A third Auror entered, "Ladies and gentlemen this is corner Balis he inspected the body for means of death."

The corner took the stand, "Corner Balis, you have seen many death eater corpses by now I assume?" I asked

He nodded, "Yes."

"Have any of them shared a common trait?" I followed stepping forward

He shook his head, "Yes in fact they have, each has a mark on their arms."

"I now bring to your attention evidence 34 B the mark." I produced a piece of parchment that showed the mark clearly

"Did Heir Ralis have this mark?" I asked

"No, at first inspection he didn't." the Corner replied and the prosecutor grinned

"First inspection?" I asked

"Yes well, I was doing a last inspection this morning so when the trial concluded I could turn the body over to his family when I noticed a faint glamor wearing off. It was applied expertly I must say but the magic was beginning to dwindle so I removed it there I saw the dark mark."

"PROPOSTEROUS! OBJECTION!" The prosecutor yelled

"What are you objecting to?" I asked

"I wasn't informed of this!"

"Neither was I he just claimed to see it this morning."

"Do you think I'm a fool what was the pensive for!?"

"He just requested it this morning."

"SILENCE!" This time it was the minister to yell, "Proceed. Show us your memory."

Corner Balis took his memory and put it into a bottle passing it to one of the Aurors and putting it into the pensive. Albus, Rufus, the minister, and the prosecutor stood and approached dipping their heads into the pensive.

"The mark was clearly shown," Albus said and the persecutor had to begrudgingly nod

I looked over and saw the shocked faces of Lord Ralis, Mulciber, Lestrange, and many others.

A smirk played on my lips, "That's it for me!"

The prosecutor tried to trip up Balis but it was impossible. Especially because he couldn't say details about the mark. How would the prosecution know about the mark after all?

"Let us pass judgment," Albus uttered at the end of the trial

Wands lit up, "In the trial of Lord Morpheus Everglade, He is found INNOCENT!"

I saw from the corner of my eye the Quill and Duskborn families raising their wands for my innocence.

A/N it is painfully obvious I know nothing of law
