Chapter 385: Chapter 384: The Oath
By the Black Lake, Murphy was taking a stroll with Dumbledore.
After walking along the gravel path for a short distance, Dumbledore suddenly stopped and gazed at the distant castle with a sigh, "What do you plan to do with Hogwarts?"
"It's no longer suitable to continue as a school. On one hand, the passage to the spirit world still poses a hazard; on the other, with the significant increase in the number of young wizards, Hogwarts might struggle to fulfill the responsibility of educating all of them."
"However, given its long history and the many secrets it harbors, I plan to use it as a research and archaeological base."
"Murphy, I hope you understand that this school holds a very special significance for many."
"I understand. Why do you look at me like that? I'm not going to blow up the school."
Dumbledore seemed somewhat incredulous, "I've heard that you blew up a dozen doors just to let Snape enter the Headmaster's office."
"Cough... That was because of the tricks you left behind when you departed."
"That was not my doing. It was the will of Hogwarts itself."
"As if it were alive."
"It has been around for a thousand years, imbued with countless magics. Even having spent longer at the school than most, I've only glimpsed a fraction of it. With so many complex magics interwoven for a thousand years, soaking every brick and stone in magic, who's to say it isn't alive?"
"Even now, I can still feel its unique call."
Murphy glanced at the castle, "Sorry, Professor, even if it is alive, it has never spoken to me."
"Maybe it just doesn't want to deal with me."
Dumbledore was momentarily speechless, eventually opening his mouth as if to say something but then held back.
"I guess you want to say I lack reverence for certain things," Murphy teased with a smile.
"Time has its own power, Murphy, as does history. But perhaps such words seem like nothing but outdated clichés to you, the victor."
Murphy looked at the school for a while, then said, "Hogwarts is also a special place for me. It might not be as important to me as it is to you, but it indeed holds an extraordinary meaning. Don't worry, I'll take good care of your school. Maybe one day, you can return to teach there."
Dumbledore shook his head, not taking Murphy's words seriously.
"Speaking of history," Murphy continued, "Professor, how did you come to know of the existence of the Oath? You must have researched this topic, right?"
Murphy's walk with Dumbledore wasn't for idle chat; he wanted to understand the truth behind the Oath and the gods, and Dumbledore was the most knowledgeable wizard he knew on the subject.
"I did some research," Dumbledore said, "What do you want to know?"
"Let's confirm something first. In my understanding, the Oath is something like the Unbreakable Vow, a spell that keeps magic as a secret, preserved in the hearts of all wizards, making all wizards keepers of the secret. Because of this effect, magic is hidden from many, leading to a decline in the world's magical level and the departure of the gods. Is that correct?"
"Indeed," Dumbledore replied, "The spell has no name, but it likely is the origin of spells like the Unbreakable Vow or Fidelius Charm. It's an extremely ancient magical power, known as 'geis' or 'geasa,' meaning 'Oath.'"
"In ancient legends, the Oath bestowed heroes with unmatched power, but it was also a taboo and a weakness. If the heroes broke their Oath, they would immediately lose their power, suffer terrible fates, or even lose their lives."
"The Oath is like a swap with fate; it grants heroes power and guides them towards destruction. The greater the power obtained from the Oath, the greater the price that must be paid."
Murphy nodded, having seen some descriptions of such ancient magic in books, "Then, do you know who created this Oath?"
"There's no record of that; it originated in ancient times, over a thousand years ago. However, some records show that ancient Druids were guardians of the Oath, later evolving into the Order of Merlin."
"I learned of the Oath's existence after receiving the Order of Merlin, First Class, allowing me access to some ancient Order history, where I discovered some clues."
"Merlin?" Murphy paused, then asked, "Is it possible that he created the Oath?"
Merlin is almost like a god among wizards, potentially the most powerful wizard in legend. If anyone could have achieved such a feat in the past, Merlin seems the likely candidate.
"Perhaps, but I couldn't find any related documents," Dumbledore said.
Murphy pondered for a while but couldn't find any useful clues. Merlin's era was too ancient, with almost no reliable texts remaining.
Thinking it over, he asked, "Another question. The Oath's purpose was to expel the gods, right? Were wizards and gods enemies? What exactly are the gods?"
"I don't know. Almost no pureblood or half-blood wizards are interested in religion," Dumbledore said, "Perhaps wizards indeed were enemies of the gods, but I don't know the specifics."
"Alright, so you don't know how the Oath was formed either?"
Dumbledore shook his head, "Unfortunately, I don't. But I have a guess. Such a world-encompassing magic couldn't likely be accomplished by a single wizard; it must have been a ritual. And since it's an Oath with such powerful effects, it probably required a significant sacrifice to activate."
"Okay." Murphy sighed, somewhat disappointed.
"What do you plan to do with this information?" Dumbledore asked.
Murphy thought for a moment and didn't hide his intentions, "Naturally, I'm looking for a way to deal with the gods. I thought if the Oath could seal them once, maybe it could do so again. If we knew the exact method of forming the Oath, perhaps we could solve the problem once and for all, or at least weaken them."
Dumbledore frowned, "I think such things are unlikely to have been preserved."
"The very nature of the Oath is secrecy. Revealing its existence only increases the risk of exposing the secret. That's why I was reluctant to tell you. Those who created the Oath would certainly have eliminated any information about its existence."
"Therefore, we can only speculate about the Oath's contents and not know precisely what it is or how it works."
Alright.
Murphy could guess it was probably the case.
Clarifying the operation mechanism of the Oath against the gods and then doing it again seems impractical.
"So the resurgence of magic is inevitable."
