Harry Potter's : Fantastic Beasts Guide

Chapter 85: Sometimes, tough love is necessary

Despite agreeing with hagrid keeping dragon egg, he still sternly explained that raising a dragon illegally at Hogwarts was no small matter. If caught, Hagrid could face a hefty fine or, worse, be sent to Azkaban. When David added that even Dumbledore might face consequences as headmaster, Hagrid's face turned pale. The idea of endangering Professor Dumbledore horrified him, and he quickly promised to find a safe way to send the dragon away. However, he pleaded to keep it for a little while longer, claiming he had grown attached.

After much debate, David and Hermione reluctantly agreed. The plan was to help Hagrid care for the dragon for a few days—just enough to ensure its safe transfer to a dragon farm. David knew the risks of keeping a dragon on school grounds but figured a few days wouldn't hurt as long as precautions were taken.

---

A few days later, Harry and Ron received a hurried note from Hagrid via Hedwig:

The dragon egg is about to hatch.

Excitement surged through Harry and Ron, and they began to chatter loudly about rushing to Hagrid's cabin immediately. Hermione, however, refused to skip their Herbology class, scolding them for prioritizing the dragon over their studies.

"Come on, Hermione!" Ron exclaimed. "Do you realize how rare this is? A dragon hatching!"

"It's illegal, Ron," Hermione shot back. "And if you don't focus on Herbology, you'll fail the exam!"

The argument continued until David intervened. "Enough, you two. We'll go to Hagrid's after class. The egg will still be hatching by then. Until then, keep your mouths shut about it. If someone overhears, the Ministry of Magic might show up before we do."

Grumbling, Ron and Harry agreed, though their minds were far from the Herbology lesson.

---

The moment class ended, Harry and Ron bolted toward Hagrid's hut, with David and Hermione following close behind. Hagrid greeted them at the door, his face beaming with excitement.

"You came just in time!" Hagrid whispered, ushering them inside.

Near the fireplace, the dragon egg lay in a large iron cauldron, trembling violently. Cracks had begun to form along its surface. Everyone gathered around, holding their breath. Suddenly, with a loud snap, the egg split open, and a tiny, wrinkled dragon emerged.

Its black scales gleamed in the firelight, and its orange, bulging eyes blinked curiously at its surroundings. It let out a small squeak, followed by a puff of smoke from its nostrils.

Ron's face fell. "That's it? It's... kind of ugly, isn't it?"

David couldn't help but agree silently. The dragon's uneven ridges and scrunched-up face were far from majestic. But it was just a hatchling—perhaps it would grow into its looks.

"Beautiful, isn't it?" Hagrid said dreamily, his eyes sparkling as he gazed at the little dragon.

"Uh, sure," David muttered, exchanging glances with Hermione, who looked equally skeptical.

Hagrid reached out to stroke the dragon's head, but the tiny creature hissed, sparks flying from its nostrils, and snapped at his hand.

"Oi!" David reacted quickly, landing a firm but gentle tap on the dragon's head with his fist. The dragon recoiled, its mouth snapping shut.

"What are you doing?!" Hagrid roared, shielding the dragon protectively.

"Hagrid," David said calmly, "Norwegian Ridgebacks are one of the most aggressive dragon breeds. If you don't discipline it now, it'll think it can do whatever it wants. Do you want it burning down your hut in a week?"

Hagrid hesitated, glancing at the dragon, which was now glaring at David and growling softly.

"Fine," Hagrid grumbled. "But I don't want to hurt it."

"Don't worry. I've got it." David turned to the dragon, which seemed to understand that David was the "bad guy." It growled louder, and David gave it another light tap on the head.

The dragon let out a pitiful whimper and buried its face in the broken eggshell.

"See? It's already learning," David said.

Hagrid sighed, his protective instincts warring with common sense.

"Right, now for its feeding," Hagrid announced, pulling out a large barrel of brandy mixed with chicken blood.

David's eyes widened. "You can't give it that!"

"But that's what dragons eat, isn't it?" Hagrid said, confused.

"Not anymore," David explained, pulling out a small pouch of powder from his bag. "This is a specially formulated dragon-nutrition mix from Newt Scamander. Just mix it with milk, and it's a much safer option."

Hagrid looked skeptical but accepted the powder. He followed David's instructions, and soon the dragon was happily lapping up the nutritious mixture.

As they watched the dragon feed, Hermione asked, "When will the dragon farm pick it up?"

"In about a week," David replied. "Charlie Weasley is coming to get it."

"Charlie? My brother?" Ron said, surprised.

David nodded.

"Wow! Charlie's amazing," Ron said, puffing up with pride. "He works with dragons all the time. He was even a star Quidditch player at Hogwarts!"

"Has he ever brought you to the dragon farm?" Harry asked curiously.

"Of course," Ron said smugly. "Why?"

Harry hesitated, glancing at the scruffy little dragon. "Are all the dragons there... as ugly as this one?"

David stifled a laugh, but Hermione elbowed Harry sharply.

"Harry!" she hissed.

The dragon seemed to sense the insult and growled at Harry, puffing out a small flame.

"Careful, Harry," David said with a grin. "If it understood you, it might set you on fire!"

The room erupted into laughter, and even the little dragon seemed to settle down, its growls turning into soft coos as it snuggled into the warmth of the fireplace.

---

For now, the dragon was safe—but the clock was ticking. Soon, Charlie would come, and Hagrid would have to say goodbye to his "baby."
