Chapter 17: Book 2: Chapter 6: Shadows in the City

Skyreach Haven was a city that never seemed to sleep, its streets alive with the constant hum of activity. Beneath the floating spires and intricate bridges connecting the many platforms, Jiang Chen navigated the bustling crowd alongside Lei Qian. Each corner seemed to radiate with the aspirations of countless cultivators—new arrivals, seasoned veterans, and shadowy figures whose motives were concealed beneath cloaks and veils.

"Stay close," Lei Qian warned as they passed through a crowded market district. Merchants hawked wares ranging from rare spiritual herbs to arcane artifacts. The air buzzed with the chatter of trades and bartering, but Jiang Chen's sharp senses picked up an undercurrent of tension. "Not every vendor here deals in honesty, and not every bystander here has good intentions."

Jiang Chen nodded, his hand instinctively brushing against the hilt of his sword. The higher plane—for all its grandeur—was a dangerous place. He had no intention of being caught unprepared.

As they approached the city's central plaza, Jiang Chen's gaze was drawn to an imposing structure. A towering obelisk of dark crystal stood at its heart, radiating an ancient energy that seemed to seep into the surrounding air. Its surface was etched with countless names, each glowing faintly with an inner light.

"The Monument of Ascension," Lei Qian said, following Jiang Chen's gaze. "It records the names of those who have made a mark on this realm. Heroes, villains, legends—their legacies are immortalized here."

Jiang Chen stepped closer, the pull of the obelisk undeniable. As he placed a hand against its cool surface, a surge of energy coursed through him, carrying with it a vision of chaos—a battlefield shrouded in crimson mist, countless figures locked in combat beneath a blood-red sky. A faint whisper echoed in his mind, the words unclear but filled with an ominous weight.

"It calls to everyone," Lei Qian said, breaking Jiang Chen's trance. "A reminder of what's at stake in this realm. Every ascendant dreams of having their name inscribed there. Will yours join them?"

Jiang Chen's lips curved into a faint smile. "It will. One way or another."

Unseen Threats

Leaving the plaza, Jiang Chen's heightened senses caught a faint disturbance. It was subtle—a shadow lingering a moment too long, footsteps that seemed to echo without a visible source. He said nothing but remained on guard, his hand never straying far from his weapon.

As they turned into a quieter street lined with dimly lit tea houses and inns, Lei Qian slowed. "You've noticed it too, haven't you?" he asked, his voice low.

Jiang Chen nodded. "Someone's following us. Two, maybe three. Their auras are masked, but they're skilled."

Lei Qian smirked. "Welcome to Skyreach Haven. The unaffiliated are easy targets, especially newcomers with no backing. Shall we deal with them here?"

"No," Jiang Chen said. "Let them think they have the upper hand. We'll draw them out."

The pair continued walking, their pace unhurried as they moved toward a less crowded district. The alleys here were narrow, the glow of lanterns casting long shadows that danced across the walls. Jiang Chen's grip on his sword tightened as the presence of their pursuers grew closer.

Finally, in a secluded courtyard surrounded by high walls, the tension snapped.

"Stop there, stranger," a voice called out. Three figures emerged from the shadows, their faces obscured by dark hoods. Their auras were sharp, brimming with intent. "You've been marked by the Crimson Tide Sect. Refuse to cooperate, and we'll make an example of you."

Jiang Chen stepped forward, his expression calm but his eyes cold. "An example? Of what?"

The leader of the trio sneered, drawing a curved blade that shimmered with malevolent energy. "Of what happens to those who think they can defy us."

Jiang Chen's hand moved like lightning, drawing his sword in a single fluid motion. The blade gleamed with golden light, its aura a stark contrast to the oppressive energy emanating from his foes.

"You should have stayed in the shadows," he said, his voice a quiet warning.

A Battle in the Courtyard

The first attacker lunged, his blade slicing through the air with deadly precision. Jiang Chen sidestepped effortlessly, his counterstrike swift and decisive. His sword met the attacker's weapon with a resounding clash, the force of the impact sending shockwaves through the courtyard.

Before the attacker could recover, Jiang Chen unleashed a burst of energy, the golden light from his blade expanding outward in a wave. The man was thrown back, his weapon shattering as he hit the ground with a pained cry.

The remaining two attackers hesitated, their confidence faltering. But the leader snarled, rallying them. "Don't falter! He's just one man!"

The second assailant moved to flank Jiang Chen, his hands weaving a complex pattern as a sphere of dark energy formed between his palms. He hurled it forward, the orb crackling with destructive force.

Jiang Chen raised his free hand, channeling the Heavenly Serpent's Core within him. A barrier of golden scales materialized around him, absorbing the attack before dissipating. He countered with a thrust of his sword, the tip glowing with concentrated power. The attack pierced through the second man's defenses, leaving him sprawled on the ground, groaning in defeat.

The leader cursed under his breath, his aura flaring as he summoned a spectral beast—a crimson wolf with eyes like burning coals. The beast lunged at Jiang Chen, its jaws snapping with ferocious speed.

Jiang Chen met the attack head-on, his sword slashing through the wolf's ethereal form. The creature dissipated in a burst of crimson light, its master reeling from the feedback.

"Enough of this," Jiang Chen said, his voice cold. He stepped forward, his blade aimed at the leader's throat. "Tell your sect that I'm not to be trifled with."

The man's bravado crumbled as he nodded frantically. "Y-yes! I'll deliver the message!"

Jiang Chen lowered his weapon, and the attackers fled, their steps hurried and unsteady.

The Aftermath

Lei Qian emerged from the shadows, clapping slowly. "Impressive. I wasn't sure if you'd need my help, but it seems I underestimated you."

Jiang Chen sheathed his sword, his expression unreadable. "They were reckless. If that's the standard of the Crimson Tide Sect, I'm not impressed."

"Don't let your guard down," Lei Qian warned. "The Crimson Tide is a large faction, and they don't take kindly to being humiliated. This won't be the last time they come for you."

Jiang Chen nodded. "Let them come. I'll deal with them as they do."

As the two continued their journey through Skyreach Haven, Jiang Chen's resolve only grew stronger. The higher plane was a land of opportunity, but it was also a crucible that tested the mettle of all who dared to ascend. Jiang Chen knew his path would be fraught with challenges, but he was determined to rise above them all—no matter the cost.
