Chapter 22: - Assassin
I shook off the thieves and returned to the inn, but I couldn’t relax.
They now knew I was an adventurer. Eventually, they might find out about this inn too.
I needed to deal with this situation soon; otherwise, they might catch us off guard. Besides, I didn’t want to live in constant fear.
I wiped every inch of Anneliese’s body, and she returned the favor. This was something I couldn’t afford to leave undone. Once that was done, Anneliese took care of her armor while I lay on the bed, checking my stats.
Today, both my level and skill proficiency had increased. As I was looking through them, I noticed something.
I had acquired new job options.
Swordmaster: Someone skilled in swordsmanship. Can use skills like Double Slash (Tiny), Mind’s Eye (Tiny), and Simple and Sturdy (Tiny). To acquire, defeat 100 monsters equal or higher than your level in one hit using a sword.
This condition wouldn’t be easy to fulfill. That’s why a Swordmaster was probably superior to a Swordsman. But I had received a lot of help from my Mithril two-handed sword. All the jobs I acquired required it.
Double Slash (Tiny): Sword technique. Performs two consecutive attacks on enemies regardless of two-handed or one-handed swords. ATK 2.5 times. Consumes 5 MP. (Active Skill)
Mind’s Eye (Tiny): Predicts the enemy’s attack and optimizes the holder’s movements. (Passive Skill)
Simple and Sturdy (Tiny): Raises the holder’s STR, VIT, AGI, and DEX abilities by 15 points, and INT and MNT abilities by 5 points. (Passive Skill)
There was even a skill, Double Slash, that had higher attack power than Buster Slash, which the Dual Sword Hero possessed. Its range wasn’t as long as Buster Slash, but its attack power was outstanding.
“Anneliese, do you know about the job Swordmaster?”
“I think… it’s a powerful job, similar to a hero or brave. I never expected you could change into a Swordmaster. Has it become possible to switch jobs to this extent?”
She stopped her armor maintenance and stared at me. Don’t look at me like that, it’s unsettling.
“It seems so.”
“As you are my Master, I wouldn’t be surprised whether you become a Swordmaster, an Assassin, or anything else. I think it’s amazing.”
How did she know that Assassins were also available to me!? Was Anneliese psychic?
“…Could it be that you really acquired the Assassin job?”
“…Seems like it.”
Stop looking at me like that!
“Are there any other jobs you’ve acquired?”
“No, just Swordmaster and Assassin.”
“Heroes, braves, swordmasters, and now assassins. Oh, and don’t forget avengers.”
“Y-yeah…”
“Those jobs are incredibly powerful. If my Master wished it, you could probably become a king, couldn’t you?”
“Well, not… impossible, but it’s still just the power of one person.”
“But if my Master is a hero, those under him will be strengthened. Even if becoming a hero or an avenger is difficult, you could raise swordmasters, assassins, and convenient adventurers. Then, eventually, you could fight against a country. That way, you can become someone who can take on nations.”
Anneliese’s words made me swallow hard. I didn’t have that level of power right now, but I couldn’t deny that it might be possible in the future. I didn’t want to become a king, but having the strength to challenge a nation might not be a bad thing.
“If people knew about my power, I don’t think the country or the nobles would stay silent.”
I felt the same way. I might need more power…
Furthermore, there was no guarantee that my summoned hero classmates wouldn’t bother us. Even though our appearances had changed, it was still possible for them to recognize us. If they did, having the power to fend them off would be necessary.
“You should seriously consider buying a slave,” Anneliese said, resuming her armor maintenance.
“…I guess so.”
It seemed I really had to consider purchasing a slave.
Preparing a slave as a contingency plan might be essential. Raising one from scratch when the need arose would be too slow. I couldn’t afford to be picky about terminologies like ‘slave.’
—
– **Assassin**: A secretive killer who strikes unexpectedly. Can use skills: Precision Strike (Tiny), Stealth (Tiny), Erase Traces (Tiny), Godspeed (Tiny), and Sensing (Tiny). To acquire, defeat a boss monster equal or higher than your level using means unrelated to job or skills.
– **Precision Strike (Tiny)**: 30% chance for attacks to be super critical (3 times damage). If the enemy doesn’t notice, the success rate becomes 100%. (Passive Skill)
– **Stealth (Tiny)**: Erases the holder’s presence. (Active Skill)
– **Erase Traces (Tiny)**: Doesn’t leave any traces of the holder’s actions. (Passive Skill)
– **Godspeed (Tiny)**: While passive, AGI +20. While active, AGI +50 for 10 seconds. Cannot be used for 5 minutes after activation. (Active Skill)
– **Sensing (Tiny)**: Sensing the presence of the surroundings. Effective radius: 15 meters. (Passive Skill)
I used the Item Box Hoarder to defeat a boss with Anneliese’s magic, and that’s how I acquired the Assassin job. It seemed that using skills was necessary, but using the Item Box was permissible. Perhaps unique skills were excluded, or maybe it wasn’t considered using the Item Box because it was Anneliese’s magic that I had taken out. Details Appraisal didn’t enlighten me on that aspect.
But this skill set was indeed fitting for an assassin. If I attacked from stealth, the Precision Strike would guarantee a tripled damage effect. Stealth had no time limit like Godspeed, making Precision Strike an extremely effective attack.
Assassin wasn’t a forcibly changed job like Thief, and its acquisition conditions weren’t criminal. However, considering the public image, I might want to avoid openly declaring myself as an ‘assassin.’
【Job】Assassin Level 1
【Race】Human
【Abilities】
HP=45
MP=39
STR=9
VIT=6
AGI=30
INT=7
MNT=6
DEX=10
ATK=27
DEF=18
MATK=21
MDEF=18
These abilities were quite sharp. I had removed all my equipment at the moment, so the AGI value was particularly outstanding. This was due to the effect of Godspeed. Even without Godspeed, my AGI was exceptionally high, a remarkable feat at level 1.
【Job】Assassin Level 1

STR=16
VIT=9
AGI=30
INT=7
MNT=6
DEX=16
ATK=83
DEF=42
MATK=21

These were the abilities when fully equipped. I didn’t have anything to increase AGI in my current equipment, yet my AGI was still high.
I decided to train the assassin tomorrow. Fortunately, unlike the hero with the two-handed sword job, the assassin job wasn’t limited to a specific weapon, so I could use the Mithril two-handed sword. If it had been limited to daggers, I might have hesitated to train it.
“Master, I’ve finished maintaining the armor,” Anneliese said.
“Good work. It must be cold. Come over here,” I said, motioning for her to join me on the bed.
“Yes.”
I didn’t have any intimate intentions. I just wanted her to warm up; it was cold, after all.
This room didn’t have heating. It was going to get even colder, and this worried me. Houses and apartments had fireplaces, but inns didn’t. People tended to layer up their clothes to keep warm.
This room was a bit better because it wasn’t on the first floor. Apparently, rooms directly above the dining area, where there was a fireplace, had warm floors, but you could hear the noise from the dining area. There were pros and cons to every choice.
I wondered if putting a carpet in this room would help. Walking barefoot might be tough. Maybe I should wear two pairs of socks.
“I’ll train the assassin tomorrow,” I said.
“If there’s anything I can do to help…”
“Just having you here, Anneliese, gives me peace of mind. That’s more than enough.”
Anneliese’s face, right in front of me, was the most elegant in the world. We were close enough for a kiss if I moved my face just a bit, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it.
I could stare at her naked body, wipe every inch of her skin, but I couldn’t kiss her. It was a different matter altogether if she would accept me or reject me. I hated how much of a coward I was. But I was genuinely scared.
