Hogwarts: Third Dark Lord

Chapter 10: Chapter 10: Defense Against the Dark Arts

"Wait, are we starting now? At least tell me what I'm supposed to do!"

Wentworth exclaimed, his voice tinged with panic.

"Don't make eye contact with Abernathy, Wentworth!"

"Wentworth, think about other things! Random things, anything will do!"

The voices of his companions rose behind him, offering haphazard advice.

"Legilimens!"

In that moment, Wentworth realized that insisting on coming to Hogwarts yesterday was undoubtedly the right decision. These people, though skilled in magic, were utterly clueless when it came to teaching!

Indeed, professional tasks should be left to professionals. When it comes to learning, the professors at Hogwarts were far more reliable. Speaking of Hogwarts professors, Wentworth suddenly wondered—who would be teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts this year?

No, I must focus! Could it be Professor Bones? Or perhaps someone else entirely?

Clinging to memories of his many past teachers, Wentworth managed to endure Abernathy's first attempt at Legilimency.

"That's enough for today, Wentworth. Remember to rest and practice Occlumency—it's mentally exhausting. We'll continue tomorrow."

Rosier spoke warmly as she dismissed everyone. After the group left, Wentworth hurried off to the bathroom.

Back at Rosier's residence, Rosier couldn't wait to turn to Abernathy and ask, "Abernathy, what do you think of Wentworth's talent? What did you glean through Legilimency?"

Abernathy's face reddened, as though he was reluctant to answer.

"What's wrong, Abernathy? Earlier, during Legilimency, I noticed you were blushing and sweating profusely. Don't tell me Wentworth's talent is so exceptional that he resisted your Legilimency on the first attempt?"

Curious whispers rose from the group.

Finally, Abernathy nodded begrudgingly. "Yes, Wentworth's talent is indeed impressive. I managed to catch a few stray thoughts at first, but after that, there was nothing."

Hearing this, everyone broke into smiles. As the heir to the Grindelwald lineage and the future leader of the Pureblood Party, Wentworth's potential was a relief to them. Nobody wanted to follow a weak leader.

Rosier, satisfied with Abernathy's assessment, asked, "What was Wentworth thinking at first? If it's something confidential, we can let it go."

"It's nothing sensitive," Abernathy replied after a brief pause. "Wentworth was wondering who the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor would be this year."

"See? Wentworth still admires the study of dark arts!" someone chimed in.

"Of course! Who wouldn't be drawn to powerful dark magic? I used to be fascinated myself. The fact that Wentworth resists its temptations and focuses on learning Occlumency—it's all for our sake!"

"Speaking of which, isn't Hogwarts' Defense Against the Dark Arts position cursed by the second Dark Lord?"

"Rubbish! That pretender doesn't deserve to be compared to our leader!"

Ignoring the murmurs, Rosier's expression turned contemplative at the mention of the Defense Against the Dark Arts class.

Noticing her thoughtful demeanor, the group fell silent.

"Rosier, is something wrong?" Abernathy finally asked.

After a moment, Rosier turned to them, her gaze firm. "I understand what Wentworth meant! Abernathy, I believe Wentworth deliberately let you read his initial thoughts!"

Abernathy looked bewildered. Rosier shook her head and explained, "The Defense Against the Dark Arts professor—that's the next step in Wentworth's plan! He wants one of us to take on that role at Hogwarts!"

"If one of us becomes the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, the benefits are enormous. First, we could protect Wentworth closely. Second, we could assist with his next moves. Third, we'd gain a legitimate public identity!"

The group finally understood, though Abernathy frowned. "But would Dumbledore even agree to let one of us become a Hogwarts professor?"

Rosier smiled confidently. "For other positions, maybe not. But the Defense Against the Dark Arts post? Dumbledore would be desperate for a candidate! After all, every Defense Against the Dark Arts professor faces one of five fates: death, resignation, fleeing, injury, or disappearance. Any headmaster would grow tired of that!"

"But we're from the Pureblood Party! Many of us are known to Dumbledore!" someone objected.

"Have you never heard of Polyjuice Potion?"

Rosier's confidence silenced their doubts, and the group broke into admiration for his cleverness.

Rosier, however, shook her head with a sigh. "No, this was all Wentworth's idea. He didn't say it outright because even he's hesitant. After all, the Defense Against the Dark Arts post is perilous. But it's clearly part of his grand plan."

Abernathy stepped forward. "I'll do it! I've worked in the American Magical Congress and received formal training. Becoming a school professor won't be a problem."

But someone immediately countered, "Don't be ridiculous! I graduated from Durmstrang Institute with equally rigorous training, and I'm far stronger than you—I'd be more help to Wentworth!"

"If it's strength you're talking about, then let's settle this properly—"

"Enough!"

Rosier's shout cut through the escalating argument, restoring order.

"The Defense Against the Dark Arts position is a pivotal part of Wentworth's plan. It requires not only strength but also meticulousness—we'd be under Dumbledore's watchful eye!"

"You lot are slow to grasp the bigger picture. Wentworth has already given us a hint, yet you bicker like this. How can I trust you to go without jeopardizing Wentworth's plans?"

"This time, I'll go myself!" Rosier declared firmly, gazing out the window with determination.
