Chapter 45: Chapter 45: Victory Belongs to Hufflepuff
Wentworth stiffly looked up, only to see Snape standing before him, his face dark and foreboding. Behind Snape, a crowd of Slytherin students glared at him with fury. Wentworth even noticed someone slowly reaching for their wand.
At that moment, Wentworth deeply regretted his earlier actions. All he had wanted was to avoid having an audience during his duel with Cassandra, which is why he had whispered those words into her ear.
But who could have predicted that Cassandra would faint right after? Now, there was no way Wentworth could explain himself!
"Professor Snape, I'm your student too!"
Wentworth said awkwardly.
Fortunately, there were plenty of professors present, including Dumbledore, who was overseeing the situation. Thanks to their intervention, Wentworth managed to retreat into the midst of the Hufflepuff students.
As the Hufflepuffs walked back to their common room in high spirits, some couldn't help but ask:
"Wentworth, what exactly did you say to Cassandra? How could you have made her faint like that?"
Wentworth, looking helpless, explained, "Enough already! Professor Sprout and Professor Flitwick both said Cassandra fainted because she exhausted her magic reserves! What does that have to do with me?"
"Then why was it such a coincidence that she fainted right after you spoke to her? You must've said something that upset her!"
"I think you all just want me dead!"
The group laughed and chatted as they made their way back to the Hufflepuff common room.
In the years to come, countless wizards would try to uncover what Wentworth—later dubbed the third Dark Lord—had said to Cassandra that day. Yet, the person in question never revealed the truth.
What was undeniable, however, was that when Grindelwald's name once again swept through Europe and the Americas, Cassandra stood by his side. So much so that the magical ministries of those regions gave her a title: The Queen of the Night.
When Wentworth, Cedric, and the others returned to the Hufflepuff common room and opened the door, they were amazed by what they saw. The room had been completely transformed. Snacks and desserts were laid out everywhere, adorning the room like stars in the sky.
"Did we get too excited and take a wrong turn into the Hogwarts kitchens?"
Kirk, the prefect, stood dumbfounded. In his five years at Hogwarts, this was the first time he had ever seen their common room look like this.
At that moment, Professor Sprout, the head of Hufflepuff House, entered the room, clapping her hands together.
"What are you all standing around for? On such a memorable night, of course, we're throwing a party!"
Hearing Professor Sprout's words, the Hufflepuffs immediately erupted into cheers and dove for their favorite desserts.
Kirk grabbed a handful of Cockroach Clusters in one hand and Toffees in the other, his mouth stuffed as he mumbled:
"Professor, when did you prepare all this?"
Professor Sprout smiled warmly and replied, "The moment you stepped into the dueling arena, Kirk, I realized what you were up to. At that moment, I knew victory would belong to Hufflepuff. So, I quietly instructed the house-elves to prepare these treats!"
Hearing this, Kirk's face lit up with joy. "Professor, am I dashing or what?"
Professor Sprout chuckled, her face beaming with pride. "Of course! All of you were amazing! Especially our little Wentworth! It's a good thing you ended up in Hufflepuff and not Ravenclaw!"
Accepting her praise with a grin, Wentworth thought to himself that it wasn't much to brag about. Hogwarts, after all, still had its simple and honest ways.
Meanwhile, Cedric, standing nearby, asked, "Professor Sprout, what if—just hypothetically—we had lost?"
Professor Sprout shrugged, her tone cheerful. "Then you'd need a dessert party even more!"
The room erupted in laughter once again.
Suddenly, an unexpected guest arrived in the Hufflepuff common room. It was none other than Professor Snape, head of Slytherin House.
The moment Snape entered, he paused, surveying the lively scene. His face darkened even further, but he maintained his composure, walking straight over to Professor Sprout.
"Professor Sprout, as you know, Cassandra has exhausted her magic and will need several days to recover. I'd like to prepare some potions to speed up her recovery, but I've run out of a few herbs. Could I trouble you to—"
As Snape spoke, the two professors left the common room together, their voices fading into the distance. But even in the darkness, Professor Sprout's cheerful smile was unmistakable.
"Perhaps," said Kirk, munching on a Cockroach Cluster without expression, "tonight's victory means more to Professor Sprout, who's been Hufflepuff's head for half her life, than it does to us."
When Kirk finished his last bite of dessert, he placed his hands heavily on Wentworth's shoulders and said earnestly:
"Wentworth, if possible, lead us to win the House Cup once. It's an honor Hufflepuff hasn't had in years!"
Cedric, concerned about his friend, quickly interjected, "Hey, Kirk, isn't that your responsibility as prefect?"
Kirk sighed and said, "Well, my abilities are limited! Besides, stop calling me prefect. I'm just Wentworth's loyal—well—follower now."
Wentworth stared at him and slowly said, "Could you take your hands off my shoulders and stop wiping your hands on my robes?!"
Kirk laughed awkwardly and patted his hands clean. "Don't sweat the small stuff, Wentworth. You're destined for greatness!"
Both Wentworth and Cedric rolled their eyes.
Later that night, after the festivities died down and the other Hufflepuffs had retired to their dorms, Wentworth quietly slipped out of his room.
Nervous and cautious, he made his way through the castle, carefully avoiding Filch. Though Wentworth guessed Filch was probably still cleaning the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, he didn't want to take any chances.
Eventually, he arrived on the eighth floor of the castle, stopping in front of a tapestry depicting trolls. Checking his surroundings to ensure no one was watching, Wentworth exhaled in relief.
Turning around, he faced the blank wall opposite the tapestry.
