Chapter 1: Surprise
In the corner of the world a lone child was wandering across the long stretch of ice and snow. If you looked at him you'd think he was in pain and freezing, feeling any pain related to the cold you could imagine. He had be walking for 3 weeks now and was now out of food.
He had been the sole survivor of a monster invasion on The Ice City of Hyouka, his hometown.
The royal family, his family had told him to leave and given him the supplies that lasted until now, but he knew they were all gone. he had been far away on the crest of a hill on the horizon stood the fallen city. There laid ruins of tall buildings, walls and houses with large beast of all kind roaming the area.
The leader of monsters had been bronze rank Wretched(3rd class). The boy had looked at the creature standing 70 meters tall clearing any rumble around it by a large margin and thought, 'it was only a low-mid level dungeon break. why couldn't we defend, how had this happened.'
Now he kept walking forwards, about a mile ahead he a vast stretch of mountains that were slowly covering more of the sky as he approached closer. They looked like as if a god had just raised large ice spears out of the ground. And his only way past was to climb using his unawakened body.
His was already 17 and was still just a normal human. This made his dreams of being strong which he had as a kid non existent. That was because normal kids awakened when they were 11 to 12.
So he just kept walking pushing the useless thoughts out of his mind, 'they weren't gonna help me anyways' he thought.
So he kept walking as he had been the past weeks.
Eventually, when he reached the base of the mountain the sun was starting to go down to the west. Which was his only gauge of which way he travelled. he looked back north towards the mountain looking for a potential big ledge or cave he could stay for the night.
However, he didn't see any so for now he just kept walking hoping he wouldn't have any encounters with creatures.
A couple hours later as the sun was fully behind the edges of the horizon. He was high enough on the mountain that he felt safe away from anything approaching from below.
The climb ahead though looked as it was going to start taking more energy out of him. The ice was going from where he could walk up to now finding grooves and ledges so he could climb.
At the pace he was going he felt like it was going to take him 2 days to reach the peak of the mountain he was climbing. Which was getting dangerous as he had no was of procuring food unless he fought a creature.
So with him he could only fight them if they were like him, unawakened.
As the moon reached its peak in the sky the boy was still climbing, but he finally caught a glimpse of a cave. So he steadied his heart and mind and approached.
As he peeked over the ledge, he saw nothing jumping out at him so he climbed up and rested on his knees. while looking into the dark entrance straining his eyes he found there were no immediate threats.
the boy sighed and took out his flask of water. That his mother had given him. It was the one thing still of use after the long weeks of travel. It never emptied of water.
Then taking off his mundane bag he took out a
Set of matches and the log like wood he had for when he finally needed to enter a cave. Because unlike the journey to this point, he needed to light to see if he entered.
The boy lit the torch and took his sword in his left hand entering the cave. To his relief it wasn't very deep only about 20 meters. So he quickly put out the torch, unwrapped his sleeping bag and went to sleep.
Once he was on the ground he immediately passed out. Only the gods knew he needed sleep.
The next day of climbing was unevetful, so the boy climbed throughout the day then found a ledge big enough for his body to sleep again.
In the morning, he looked up and estimated it would take until noon to real the peak so he could look for people or food.
Towards the top only 30 minutes away he started to smell blood. So he quickened his pace as much as his starving body allowed.
When he saw the scene at the peak of the mountain his eyes widened in fear.
Unbeknownst to him when he was below climbing there was a sloped platform that on the backside of the peak which was flat enough to stand without sliding off. And on the platform he saw a whole pack of silver rank awakened monsters that resembled wolves with horns all laying completely dead.
When he finally registered the scene he couldn't even think about what could've taken them out. Either way all he could do was hope it wasn't here. Similarly he was really hungry.
So he stumbled through the ice and snow passing the first two beasts that found let be recognized and started to use his full strength just to get his sword to get a chunk of meat so he could cook 'if this is what awakened are like then how tuough would that damned wretched be' he thought.
once he got his meat, he decided it'd be smart to look over there side of the platform for life and see if he's gonna be in danger. So he walked through the dead beasts towards the other edge 30 meters away.
When he walked around the last beast that seemed to be the leader as it was 3 time larger than he was. what he saw was unexplainable.
It was a young girl maybe 11 year old. but she wasn't standing, or moving at all. She was laying dead in a hands up snow angel position.
So he ran as fast as he could up to her but it looked like he was to late when he got close and kneeled next to her. Her heart wasn't beating, there was no pulse, 'how unfortunate she killed all these crazy things just to die with the last one.' Well I guess I should bury her.
as he came out of his reverie he looked down at the girls glazed over gray eyes and closed them. After he closed his eyes and said a prayer.
Right when he was finishing he hear a voice "hey what are you doing." He opened his eyes and looked down to see the girl sitting up looking at him.
"AAAAAAHHH"
"What the hell you yelling for" she replied
"b-but you were just dead" while his voice was shaking and he was crawling backward he spoke.
"I've always been dead, what I want to know is how you can see me?" with no expression on her face, then a frown as she replied.
his voice still shaking he asked, "h-huh you're s-still dead"
"Surprise"
