Honkai Star Rail : Shadows of Nihility

Chapter 10: Chapter 10: The Sigil’s Whisper

Wei Longshen lingered in the cave long after the masked figure disappeared into the night, the sigil fragment resting in his gloved hand. Its intricate design glimmered faintly in the low light, the faint hum of energy resonating with the void within him. The fragment was more than a symbol—it was a thread, a link to the conspiracy that had torn his life apart.

But it was also a trap. Wei knew better than to trust a stranger offering aid, no matter how well-informed they seemed. Still, the sigil fragment wasn't without value. It was proof, a piece of the puzzle, and a clue to Xue Ren's vast network.

Wei tucked the fragment into his cloak and stepped out of the cave. The night was still, the forest alive with the faint rustle of leaves and distant calls of nocturnal creatures. He pulled his cloak tighter, the mask concealing his face as he vanished into the shadows.

The sigil fragment proved more useful than Wei had expected. The intricate patterns etched into its surface matched the markings of certain underground networks tied to Aurum Alley. Wei's memories of the Luofu's underworld served him well. He recalled a faction that used similar symbols—a group that operated within the deepest recesses of the Luofu's trade hubs, dealing in secrets, artifacts, and forbidden goods.

As dawn broke, Wei approached Aurum Alley's outskirts. The sprawling trade district was already alive with activity, its labyrinthine streets buzzing with merchants, travelers, and opportunists. Wei kept his movements deliberate, blending into the crowd with practiced ease. His cloak and mask ensured no one recognized him, though he could feel the weight of wary glances as he passed.

The sigil's markings led him to a less-traveled section of the district, where the bustling market gave way to quieter alleys. Here, the air was thicker, the atmosphere charged with an unspoken tension. Wei stopped before a modest storefront, its faded sign bearing the sigil's symbol carved into its wood—a subtle marker, visible only to those who knew what to look for.

Inside, the shop was dimly lit, its shelves lined with trinkets and curiosities. The shopkeeper, an elderly man with a hunched posture, barely looked up as Wei entered. His eyes flicked briefly to the sigil fragment Wei placed on the counter, his expression unreadable.

"Downstairs," the man said simply, his voice low. "Follow the lanterns."

Wei nodded, slipping through a narrow doorway at the back of the shop. A steep staircase led downward, the air growing cooler as he descended into the underground chambers beneath Aurum Alley. The faint glow of lanterns illuminated the path, their light casting long shadows across the stone walls.

At the bottom of the stairs, the chamber opened into a vast underground market. Traders and buyers moved among the stalls, their faces obscured by masks or hoods. The sigil fragment's markings matched the symbols carved into several of the stalls, confirming Wei's suspicions. This was a hub for Xue Ren's network.

Wei approached one of the stalls, his eyes scanning the goods displayed: weapons, relics, and other items of dubious origin. The trader, a wiry man with sharp features, watched him cautiously.

"Looking for something specific?" the man asked, his tone measured.

Wei placed the sigil fragment on the counter, his voice low. "I'm looking for the one who controls this."

The trader's eyes flicked to the fragment, his expression tightening. "You don't ask questions like that here."

Wei leaned forward slightly, his presence unmistakable even through his disguise. "I'm not asking."

The trader hesitated, then sighed, lowering his voice. "You're looking for the back chambers. Only select buyers are allowed in. If you don't have an invitation, you'll need to make one."

Wei's hand rested briefly on the hilt of his blade, the gesture subtle but effective. "And how do I do that?"

The trader glanced around nervously before sliding a small token across the counter. "This will get you through the first door. But be careful. Xue Ren's people don't take kindly to uninvited guests."

Wei took the token, tucking it into his cloak. Without another word, he disappeared into the crowd, his focus on the back chambers where Xue Ren's name lingered like a shadow.

The path to the back chambers was heavily guarded. Wei moved with precision, observing the guards' patterns and the faint glow of suppression glyphs etched into their weapons. The presence of such precautions confirmed the importance of this area—whatever was being kept here, it was valuable enough to warrant extreme measures.

Using the token, Wei passed through the first checkpoint without incident. The guards barely glanced at him, their attention focused on the stream of buyers entering the chambers. Inside, the atmosphere shifted. The room was quieter, the tension palpable as masked figures exchanged whispered deals and furtive glances.

Wei's eyes caught sight of a familiar symbol etched onto a crate near the center of the room—the same sigil fragment he carried. He moved closer, his every step calculated to avoid drawing attention. The crate was sealed, its surface marked with glyphs that pulsed faintly with energy.

Before he could investigate further, a voice cut through the silence. "You don't belong here."

Wei turned slowly, his hand resting on the hilt of his blade. A tall figure stood before him, their face obscured by a mask etched with intricate runes. Their posture was confident, their voice laced with authority.

"And who are you to say where I belong?" Wei asked, his tone cold.

The figure stepped closer, their movements deliberate. "Someone who doesn't appreciate interference. Leave now, and you might live to regret it."

Wei's grip tightened on his blade, the void within him stirring. "You should be careful who you threaten."

The tension crackled like a live wire, the air growing heavier as the two faced off. Wei didn't wait for the figure to make the first move. Shadows coiled around him, his blade flashing in the dim light as he struck with precision.
