How I Became The Villain

Chapter 20: Frustration

The battlefield outside Lunareth was a maelstrom of chaos. The enemy pressed forward with ruthless precision, their elite warriors carving a path through Sylvana's defenders. Queen Sylvena stood tall amidst the carnage, her staff blazing with radiant light as she unleashed another wave of magic to halt the advancing horde.

'This is getting harder!'

a captain shouted, his shield shattered and his voice strained.

'They're overwhelming us!'

'Then we'll make them pay for every inch they take,'

Sylvena said, her tone unyielding.

'This city will not fall as long as I stand.'

She raised her staff, summoning a glowing barrier to protect her faltering troops. The crimson-armored general leading the enemy forces sneered, his dark blade crackling with energy as he advanced.

'Your defiance is admirable, Queen Sylvena,'

he taunted, his voice carrying across the battlefield.

'But it is futile. Surrender now, and I may yet spare some of your people.'

Sylvena stepped forward, her expression cold.

'Lunareth will never kneel to the likes of you.'

The general laughed, raising his blade for another devastating attack.

Before the general could strike, a low, rumbling sound echoed across the battlefield. It grew louder, deeper, until the ground itself seemed to quake beneath their feet. The soldiers on both sides hesitated, their gazes shifting nervously toward the horizon.

'What is that?'

one of Sylvena's captains asked, gripping his sword tightly.

Sylvena turned, her breath catching as a massive figure emerged from the distant treeline. The earth trembled with each step as a towering figure clad in gleaming black armor strode onto the battlefield, a massive war axe resting casually on his shoulder.

It was Thadric.

The silence that followed was broken only by his booming voice, deep and resonant.

'Who dares threaten the allies of Kaedus the Eternal?'

The enemy forces froze, their confidence faltering as the massive warrior advanced. The crimson-armored general snarled, stepping forward to face him.

'So the Dark Lord sends another of his lackeys to die. I'll cut you down like the others.'

Thadric's laugh rumbled like thunder as he raised his axe.

'You're welcome to try.'

The two clashed, the sheer force of their blows sending shockwaves across the battlefield. Thadric's massive axe tore through the enemy ranks, cleaving through shields and sending soldiers scattering.

'Form up!'

Sylvena shouted, rallying her forces behind Thadric's unstoppable advance.

'Push them back!'

As Thadric tore through the enemy's front lines, a flash of silver light erupted from the sky. It streaked downward like a shooting star, striking the battlefield with a deafening crash. When the dust settled, a figure stood amidst the wreckage, her silver hair shimmering and her hands crackling with electricity.

It was Elvara.

'Apologies for the delay, Queen Sylvena,'

she said, her voice calm but laced with power.

'Let's clean up this mess, shall we?'

She raised her hands, arcs of lightning bursting forth and arcing through the enemy ranks. Soldiers screamed as the electricity danced between them, their formations crumbling under the onslaught.

'Elvara!'

Sylvena called, her eyes widening in surprise.

'Kaedus sent you as well?'

'Of course,'

Elvara replied with a smirk.

'The Dark Lord doesn't abandon his allies.'

The arrival of the lightning mage sent shockwaves through the enemy ranks, their confidence faltering as the tide of battle began to shift.

On the western flank, where Sylvena's forces were barely holding the line, a group of enemy assassins slipped through the chaos, their blades gleaming with deadly intent. They moved silently, their eyes fixed on Sylvena as they prepared to strike.

A soft laugh echoed through the shadows.

'You should really learn to pick your targets more carefully.'

Before the assassins could react, a blur of movement descended upon them. Selyna emerged from the shadows, her twin daggers flashing like silver streaks. The first assassin fell without a sound, and the others barely had time to draw their weapons before she was upon them.

'You call this stealth?'

she said, her tone mocking as she dispatched another assassin with ease.

'I've seen drunkards make less noise.'

One of the assassins lunged at her, but Selyna sidestepped effortlessly, her blade finding its mark in his throat. She turned to the last one, who had frozen in fear, and tilted her head with a wicked smile.

'Run,'

she said.

The assassin bolted, disappearing into the chaos.

Selyna sheathed her daggers, her smirk widening as she glanced toward the battlefield.

'Time to remind these fools why they don't mess with us.'

Near the city's gates, where the enemy had brought forth siege engines, another figure made their entrance. A column of fire erupted from the ground, engulfing one of the massive siege towers and reducing it to ash. Rynor stepped forward, his ember-lit staff blazing as he unleashed another wave of destruction.

'This is what happens when you attack our allies,'

he said, his voice cold and commanding.

The enemy forces scrambled to regroup, their siege engines reduced to smoldering wreckage. Rynor moved methodically, his spells carving through the battlefield with devastating precision.

Far from the battlefield, hidden behind a ridge overlooking the chaos, the enemy commanders gathered in a makeshift war tent. The tent was sparse, lit only by a few flickering lanterns that cast long shadows on the scarred faces of the figures within. The leader of the group, a man draped in crimson robes etched with arcane runes, slammed his fist against the table.

'This shouldn't be happening!'

he snarled, his voice dripping with venom.

'The reinforcements are overwhelming our elite units. Where did these monsters come from?'

A hulking brute clad in jagged, blackened armor growled low in his throat.

'You underestimated the Dark Lord,'

he said.

'We all did. But now is not the time for blame. We need to respond, or we'll lose more than just this battle.'

The robed man scowled, sparks of magic flickering from his hands as his frustration boiled over.

'Respond? We planned for every contingency. But these commanders... They're something else.'

He turned to another figure, who sat silently sharpening a blade that gleamed with a sickly green glow.

'Then let's see if they can handle our best,'

the swordsman murmured, his voice cold and detached.

'It's time we remind them why the world fears us.'

Sylvena watched in awe as the mage's power turned the tide of battle.

'He's incredible,'

she murmured.

'They all are,'

Aerith replied, his expression grim but hopeful.

'With allies like this, perhaps we stand a chance.'

As one commander after another made their entrance, the enemy forces found themselves pushed to the brink. The crimson-armored general, now bloodied and battered, glared at Thadric with unbridled fury.

'How is this possible?'

he snarled.

'We had the advantage!'

Thadric laughed, slamming his axe into the ground and sending a shockwave through the enemy ranks.

'You thought you caught us off guard,'

he said.

'You thought wrong.'

Selyna appeared behind the general, her voice dripping with mockery.

'Did you really think you could outsmart Kaedus the Eternal? We saw through your little plan before you even made it.'

The general turned to strike her, but Thadric's axe came down first, ending the battle with a resounding crash.
