Howling Rebirth: Rise

Chapter 17: Chapter 17: The Shattered Peak

The ascent was grueling. The jagged path leading to the heart of the mountains seemed almost alive, shifting and cracking beneath their paws. The air was colder now, biting at their fur and chilling them to the bone. The corrupted energy emanating from the Nexus pulsed stronger with each step, filling Fenrir with both dread and determination.

The pack followed closely, their movements cautious. Fenrir walked at the front, his silver eyes scanning for danger, his senses on edge. Every now and then, the faint echo of the voice whispered to him, but it offered no guidance—only its haunting presence.

"Fenrir, are you sure about this?" Ash asked, breaking the heavy silence. His breath clouded the air, his tone hesitant.

Fenrir paused, turning to face his second-in-command. "No," he admitted, his voice steady. "But we don't have a choice. If we turn back now, the Abyss will spread, and everything we've fought for will be lost."

Ash nodded, though his unease was evident.

---

They reached a plateau just as the sun began to dip below the horizon. The sky was painted in fiery hues, the light casting long shadows across the barren landscape. At the far end of the plateau stood a massive structure—a broken archway made of dark stone, its surface etched with glowing crimson runes.

"That must be it," Ember said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Fenrir stepped closer, his silver aura flaring faintly. The runes pulsed with a rhythmic energy, matching the beat of the Nexus deep within the mountain.

"This is it," he said, his voice low. "The gateway to the Nexus."

As the pack gathered around him, the ground beneath them began to tremble. A low rumble echoed through the air, growing louder with each passing second.

"Get ready!" Fenrir barked.

---

The first creature emerged from the archway with a deafening roar. It was massive, its body covered in jagged, obsidian-like scales that gleamed in the fading light. Its eyes burned with crimson fire, and its claws left deep gouges in the stone as it charged forward.

"Hold your ground!" Fenrir commanded, his silver aura flaring to life.

The pack sprang into action, their movements coordinated and precise. Ash leapt at the creature's flank, his claws raking against its scales, while Ember darted in and out, nipping at its legs to disrupt its balance.

Fenrir charged straight at the beast, his silver energy forming a shield around him. He collided with the creature head-on, the impact sending shockwaves through the air.

The beast roared in fury, its claws slashing at Fenrir's shield. He gritted his teeth, pushing back with all his strength.

"Fenrir..." the voice whispered again, clearer this time.

---

The battle raged on, the pack working together to wear the creature down. Despite its size and power, their relentless assault began to take its toll.

But then the archway pulsed again, and more creatures emerged. Smaller than the first, but no less dangerous, they swarmed toward the pack with horrifying speed.

"We're outnumbered!" Ash shouted, his voice strained.

Fenrir's mind raced. The light within him burned brighter, urging him to act. He let out a deep growl, his silver aura intensifying.

"Stay close to me!" he barked.

The pack obeyed, forming a tight circle around him. Fenrir closed his eyes, focusing all his energy on the light. It responded eagerly, surging through him like a tidal wave.

When he opened his eyes, the silver light erupted outward, engulfing the plateau in a blinding flash.

---

The creatures shrieked as the light tore through them, their forms dissolving into ash. Even the massive beast fell to its knees, its obsidian scales cracking and crumbling under the onslaught.

When the light finally faded, the plateau was silent. The pack stood in stunned silence, their eyes wide with awe.

Fenrir collapsed to the ground, his body trembling from the effort. Ash and Ember rushed to his side, their concern evident.

"Fenrir, are you okay?" Ember asked, her voice shaky.

He nodded weakly, though his breaths came in ragged gasps. "I'll be fine," he said. "But we're not done yet."

---

As the pack helped him to his feet, the archway began to change. The runes that had once glowed crimson now pulsed with a silvery light, matching Fenrir's aura.

"What's happening?" Ash asked, his voice filled with both awe and fear.

Fenrir stared at the archway, his silver eyes reflecting its glow.

"It's reacting to the light," he said. "It's... opening."

The air around them grew heavy, charged with an otherworldly energy. The archway shimmered, and beyond it, a vast expanse of swirling silver and black light became visible.

"The Nexus," Fenrir whispered.
