Howling Rebirth: Rise

Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Into the Frostlands

The winds howled like restless spirits as Fenrir and his pack entered the Frostlands. The once-vibrant forests of the Nexus were now a distant memory, replaced by an endless expanse of snow and ice. Jagged peaks pierced the sky, their shadows stretching across the frozen wasteland like the claws of some ancient predator.

Ember huddled close to Fenrir, her fiery fur doing little to shield her from the biting cold. "Why does the first fragment have to be in a place like this?" she muttered, her flames flickering weakly.

Ash trudged ahead, his massive paws crunching through the snow. "Stop whining. At least you're warm. Try being covered in frost every five steps."

Fenrir led the way, his silver aura faint but steady, cutting through the haze of frost swirling around them. His mind was focused on the vision the Lightbringer had shown him. Somewhere deep within this frozen expanse lay the first fragment of light, guarded by trials and dangers yet unseen.

---

Hours passed as they pushed through the cold, their breaths forming clouds in the frigid air. The landscape offered little in the way of shelter, and the pack's energy was beginning to wane.

"We need to rest," Ember said, her voice strained. "If we keep going like this, we'll freeze before we find anything."

Fenrir scanned the horizon, his sharp eyes catching the faint outline of a cave nestled against a rocky outcrop. "There," he said, nodding toward the shelter.

The pack hurried toward the cave, relief washing over them as they stepped out of the relentless wind. Inside, the air was still cold, but at least it was free of the biting gale.

Ash slumped against the wall, his breaths heavy. "We're going to need a better plan if this keeps up. The Frostlands aren't just cold—they're draining us."

Ember nodded, curling into a ball as her flames sputtered weakly. "I hate this place already."

Fenrir stood near the entrance, his gaze fixed on the swirling snow outside. "We'll rest here for now," he said. "But we can't stay too long. The longer we wait, the stronger the Abyss's grip on the fragment becomes."

---

As the pack rested, Fenrir's thoughts wandered. He couldn't shake the feeling that something was watching them. The Frostlands were too quiet, too still, as if the land itself was holding its breath.

"Fenrir."

The voice of the Lightbringer echoed in his mind, its tone more urgent than before.

"The Frostlands are not just a trial of endurance. They are a test of your will. Beware the shadows that lurk in the cold—they will try to break you."

Fenrir closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. "What kind of shadows?"

"The Frostlands reflect the doubts and fears buried within your heart. Stay strong, or the cold will claim you."

The voice faded, leaving Fenrir with a deep sense of unease. He glanced at his companions, both of whom were already asleep, their exhaustion evident.

"I won't let the cold take us," he murmured, his resolve hardening.

---

The pack continued their journey the next day, the biting wind relentless as ever. The cave had offered some reprieve, but the Frostlands seemed determined to sap their strength with every step.

As they crossed a narrow ridge, a sudden roar shattered the silence. The pack froze, their ears flattening as the ground trembled beneath them.

"What was that?" Ember whispered, her flames flaring instinctively.

Fenrir's gaze darted toward the source of the sound. In the distance, a massive figure emerged from the snowstorm. It was a beast unlike any they had seen before—a towering, white-furred creature with eyes that burned like embers and claws that glinted like ice.

"The Frost Guardian," Fenrir said, his voice low.

The Guardian let out another roar, its breath forming icy crystals in the air. It charged toward the pack, its massive form barreling through the snow with terrifying speed.

---

"Scatter!" Fenrir barked, leaping to the side as the Guardian's claws slammed into the ground where they had been standing.

Ember darted around the creature, her flames igniting as she launched a stream of fire at its side. The Guardian roared in pain but quickly retaliated, swinging its massive paw in a wide arc.

Ash lunged at the Guardian's leg, his jaws clamping down with enough force to crack ice. The beast stumbled but quickly recovered, shaking him off with a furious growl.

Fenrir circled the Guardian, his silver aura flaring as he searched for an opening. The creature was fast despite its size, and its thick fur seemed to absorb much of their attacks.

"This thing's tougher than it looks!" Ember shouted, dodging another swipe.

Fenrir narrowed his eyes, focusing on the Guardian's movements. The beast was strong, but its attacks were predictable. If they could outmaneuver it, they might have a chance.

"Keep it distracted!" he called out. "I'll go for the head!"

---

As Ember and Ash continued their assault, Fenrir darted toward the Guardian, using his speed to close the distance. The beast turned toward him, its glowing eyes narrowing as it prepared to strike.

But Fenrir was faster. He leapt onto the creature's back, his claws glowing with silver light as he dug into its thick fur. The Guardian howled, thrashing violently in an attempt to shake him off.

"Hold still!" Fenrir growled, his claws sinking deeper.

The silver light around him grew brighter, piercing through the Guardian's defenses. The beast let out one final, deafening roar before collapsing, its massive form crashing into the snow.

Fenrir leapt off its back, landing gracefully as the Guardian's body dissolved into a swirl of icy mist.

---

The pack gathered around Fenrir, their breaths visible in the cold air.

"Nice work," Ember said, her flames flickering with renewed vigor.

Ash nodded, his expression grim. "If that was just the first challenge, we're in for a rough journey."

Fenrir glanced toward the horizon, where the snowstorm seemed to part just enough to reveal a faint, shimmering light in the distance.

"The fragment is close," he said, his voice steady. "But the hardest part is still ahead."

With renewed determination, the pack pressed on, their eyes fixed on the distant light.
