Chapter 28: Chapter 28: The First Fragment
The shard of light hovered before Fenrir, its glow soft but intense. As the pack stood in the now-silent chamber, the warmth of the fragment seemed to push away the biting cold of the Frostlands.
Fenrir stepped closer, his silver eyes reflecting the radiant fragment. It pulsed faintly, as though responding to his presence. He could feel the energy it held—a power ancient and vast, yet strangely familiar.
"Is this... it?" Ember asked, her voice soft with awe.
Ash narrowed his eyes, his wariness not yet fading. "It feels too easy. There's no way it's just going to let us take it."
Fenrir ignored the conversation behind him, his focus entirely on the fragment. The closer he got, the louder the voice of the Lightbringer became in his mind.
"Touch the fragment, Fenrir. It is yours to claim. But beware—its power will test you."
He hesitated for only a moment before reaching out. The instant his paw made contact with the shard, a brilliant light engulfed him.
---
The world around Fenrir vanished, replaced by an endless expanse of white. He stood alone, his form dwarfed by the vast emptiness.
"Fenrir," a voice called, soft but commanding.
He turned to see a figure emerging from the light. It was a wolf, larger than any he had ever seen, with fur that shimmered like starlight. Its eyes, ancient and wise, locked onto his with an intensity that made him feel exposed.
"Who are you?" Fenrir asked, his voice steady despite the surreal surroundings.
"I am the guardian of this fragment," the wolf said. "You have proven your strength and unity, but now I must test your heart."
Fenrir tensed. "Test me how?"
The wolf's eyes glimmered with a strange light. "By showing you the truth."
---
The scene around Fenrir shifted. He found himself back in his old home on Earth, the familiar warmth of the fireplace and the scent of Lila's cooking filling the air.
"Fenrir!"
His ears perked up at the sound of her voice. He turned to see Lila walking into the room, her face lit with joy. For a moment, everything felt right again.
But then the cracks began to show. The room shimmered, flickering like a broken projection. Lila's smile wavered, her figure growing hazy.
"Stay," she said, her voice echoing strangely. "You don't have to leave. You can stay here with me."
Fenrir's heart ached. He stepped toward her, his instincts screaming at him to stop. "This isn't real," he said, his voice firm despite the pain.
"Isn't it?" Lila asked, her voice filled with sorrow. "Isn't this what you want?"
---
The wolf guardian's voice echoed in the space.
"Your greatest challenge is not your strength or your mind, but your heart. Can you let go of the past and embrace the future?"
Fenrir closed his eyes, forcing himself to take a deep breath. The image of Lila wavered before him, her sad eyes piercing through his resolve.
"I'll never forget her," he said, his voice steady. "But my path is forward now. I have a purpose—a pack to protect, a world to save."
The scene shattered like glass, and Fenrir found himself back in the endless white expanse. The wolf guardian stood before him, its expression unreadable.
"You have passed," it said simply.
---
When the light faded, Fenrir was back in the icy chamber. Ember and Ash stared at him, their faces filled with concern.
"Fenrir! What happened?" Ember asked, rushing to his side.
Fenrir glanced at her, his silver aura glowing faintly. "The fragment tested me. But we're ready now."
The shard of light pulsed once more before merging into Fenrir's chest. He gasped as its energy surged through him, filling him with a warmth that felt both foreign and familiar.
Ash stepped closer, his eyes narrowing. "And? What does it mean?"
Fenrir's voice was calm but resolute. "It means we're one step closer to ending this."
---
As the pack left the chamber, the landscape of the Frostlands began to change. The snowstorm eased, revealing the vast expanse of ice and peaks beneath a pale, glowing sky. The fragment's energy seemed to ripple outward, bringing a sense of calm to the once-turbulent land.
Ember trotted beside Fenrir, her flames burning brighter than before. "So... one down, two to go. Do you think the next fragment will be as tough?"
Ash snorted. "It'll probably be worse."
Fenrir glanced at his companions, a small smile forming on his muzzle. "We'll face it together. No matter what comes."
The pack continued their journey, the light of the first fragment guiding them toward their next destination.
