Chapter 11: Vol 2 chapter 5:Creating a new potion
It has been around a month since the winning of the quidditch cup. With the help of Septimus it was quite simple after all. Most of Septimus's days are spent either in the library or on the quidditch field. At this point he was playing quidditch for fun as he had improved his golden snitch catching time by a minute and a half. After reaching the 2 minute mark the problem was more to do with the abilities of the broom rather than Septimus's own skill. He has completely mastered the game at this point and there was almost no room for improvement.
After the tournament he received many invites to famous quidditch teams and naturally he was also invited to the English national quidditch team. The national team hadn't won for years and as such they offered quite a huge prize for Septimus to play. The historical figure of 1000 gallons weekly for the next 3 years was the highest price ever recorded and it was mentioned in the first page of multiple newsletters. Suprisingly or unsurprisingly Septimus rejected as he just couldn't be bothered to play quidditch professionally.
The weekly 1000 gallons made him considered it for a while but in the end he still rejected the offer. It wasn't like he was in need of gallons and if he needed any he could just brew a few potions. His potion skills weren't that far off of Snapes potion skills. The more difficult potions went for crazy prices on the market and it wouldn't be that difficult to earn a 1000 gallons within a few days. The estimate of a few days also included the minimum of an 8 hour sleep and 10 hours spent researching and learning.
___________
Like every other day Septimus was researching potions with uncle Snape. Snape was like a father to him at this point. Still Snape always insisted that I should call him uncle as he was always scared about the troubles I might cause that would be put on him.
"Uncle Snape I have recently thought about the problem of squibs. They are of magic origin and surrounded by magic most of the time, but they just can't use magic. Why is that the case? Could it be that they just have no magic or is it that their magic powers are too weak and as such can't use magic?"
The old bat looked at Septimus for a moment. It was like he was looking at Ron or the Weasley twins who always said stupid things that could somehow always anger him,"The problem of squibs has laster for centuries. To tell you the truth it wasn't like that during the founders time. There were no squibs. It has always been thought that the wizards magic power has been weakening over the years."
"For example there was 4 founders and a few more wizards at the supposed legendary wizard level a thousand years ago but now there is only 3. One of who is dead and 2 other old bastards that will die in a few years. Besides at that time there was no wands being used, meaning that to be at that level of magic was even more difficult than nowadays."
"Wizards of many fields have tried to find solutions for this, but to no avail. In the potion field there are potions that can indeed increase magic power, but it still hasn't worked. Besides the resources and material required for creating such potions are extremely expensive. Most potions that enhance magic power use either phoenix tears or pieces of dragons hearts. Basically anything that has a high amount of magic power."
"To be honest I have tried it myself. If I could use such potions to increase my magic power by a large amount wouldn't I be stronger than Dumbledore at some point of time in the future. Sadly enough with the current potions created on increasing magic power most of the materials magic is wasted and such potions would only increase an almost miserable amount of magic. I have improved some potions myself but the effect was still useless to adult wizards. It would take hundreds of potions to double an adult wizards magic power. The cost just doesn't match the result and as for squibs, according to by research it would require about 20 potions."
"Besides isn't this knowledge mentioned in the magic history year 3 chapter 13. I thought you said to me a few days ago that you have memorised all magic history books from the first year till the fifth. I guess you have been slacking off recently."
"Is it possible that your head got hit by a ball while playing quidditch or you have been cursed by some dark wizard,"said Snape with a mocking gaze.
"It isn't that I haven't memorised the history books. It's just more like I feel pity for squibs. Most normal people will most likely never know of magic existence and as such feel nothing about not being able to use it. Meanwhile most squibs are surrounded by magic in their daily life. Many of them live depressed and are despised by other wizards. We wizards despise other while we ourselves are not good enough to solve the problem."
"As such I will solver this problem. Although I have no use for this potions since my magic power already surpasses everyone else's, I will still to this for the greater cause,"Septimus couldn't help but laugh while mentioning a certain magic school headmasters favourite line.
Snape obviously angered by the line of his greatest friend and enemy wanted to be alone,"Alright kid, do whatever you want, but bear in mind you can't use too many of my materials. If I find out that half the materials are gone in a week you'll be making potions day and night till you make enough money back to buy all those materials back."
___________
A few days later Septimus has read through Snapes materials on the topic and understands most of this fields potions. On the topic of magic enchanted potions he is no doubt one of the most knowledgeable wizards. He already has some ideas for the potion. Argus Filch the squib caretaker of Hogwarts.
To test the potions he had conducted he naturally found a willing test subject who would even be grateful to him. Naturally he also paid a few gallons to him and signed a contract so if anything too bad happened it wouldn't be his fault.
"Argus Filch, the caretaker of Hogwarts."
"This is test potion 1"
"There is a total of 22 ingredients. The ingredients are:dragon heart, phoenix feathers... ."
After Septmiuses signal the test subject drank the potion. The first few minutes nothing happened. Septmius was prepared to call the test 1 a failure till he saw the test subjects face turn purple. Filch suddenly breathed out fire like a dragon. Obviously the potion was a failure.
"Test 1 is a failure. There is no sign of magic improvement and the test subject breathed out fire. It's probably the effect of the dragon heart or the phoenix feathers.
"Test 2"
"Test 2 was also a failure. The test subject breathed out fire again. I guess it wasn't the Dragone heart rather the phoenix feathers.
"Test 12"
"I have found out that the breathing of fire was the fault of 2 minor ingredients that were included in the recipe. The test subject no has passive purple face and occasionally breathes out fire. The test will be continued the next day."
"Test 34"
"The test subject has been sent to the school hospital as a light accident happened during the process of making the potion. I accidentally dropped a little too much trolls snot into the potion and now the test subject is even more stupid than before. It isn't all that bad as the test subject will be more easy to trick into drinking a lot of suspicion looking potions I have in store that I didn't dare to try out till now."
"Test 57"
"Today was the first step of success of creating the potion as Filch was able to become a wizard for a short amount of time. The duration lasted for about an hour. After that there would be a weakening period of 3 hours were the subject could barely move."
_______________
It had been about a week and Septimus finally succeeded. He had created a potion that would increase magic power enough that squibs could use magic and it would have a noticeable effect on the magic of adult wizards.
The potion had a total of 23 ingredients, the most notable of them being phoenix tears and dragon scales. You would never think that dragons scales would be needed even, yet it was the most important material of the potion as its properties could save a lot of magic power in the other ingredients being wasted.
The potion would need to be mass tested since there was only 1 test subject but it would most likely work on other people too.
"Couldn't I create my own magic army since most squibs wouldn't mind working for me by gaining the ability of magic?"
